Can Kathy Griffin fill Joan Rivers‘ shoes? According to The Hollywood Reporter, a shortlist of potential replacements has been drawn up to take over for the late great comedienne on E!‘s Fashion Police. Griffin is said to be in serious contention for the job. However, no formal talks have taken place, as the network’s executives feel not enough time has passed since Rivers’ death.  The series is set to return on Monday, January 12, following the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 11.

IN THE NEWS

Executives from Starz and Rupert Murdoch‘s 21st Century Fox have reportedly met to discuss a possible acquisition of the premium cable movie service. While there is no deal in place yet, a full acquisition of the company could be valued at more than $3.2 billion, based on its share price of $29.58 Tuesday. Starz said in a statement that "as a public company, we do not comment on rumors or speculation."

After Comcast counted Netflix among those making “extortionate” demands, the streaming-video company has fired back. “It is not extortion to demand that Comcast provide its own customers the broadband speeds they’ve paid for so they can enjoy Netflix,” said a statement responding to Comcast’s FCC filing Wednesday. “It is extortion when Comcast fails to provide its own customers the broadband speed they’ve paid for unless Netflix also pays a ransom.”

James Franco’s behind-the-scenes documentary on Saturday Night Live debuts on Hulu Friday, September 26, the day before the premiere of the NBC sketch comedy’s 40th season. Franco made the movie, about how an episode of SNL is made, while he was a graduate film student at NYU.

Former host of ABC‘s Good Morning America, Joan Lunden, is joining NBC rival Today. Albeit, temporarily. Lunden, who revealed her battle with breast cancer on GMA, will be featured as a special correspondent on the NBC morning show during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as part of a series on the disease.

In an exclusive deal with The Weinstein Company and Endemol, Netflix has acquired the first two seasons of the British gangster drama Peaky Blinders. The streaming service will premiere Season One on Tuesday, September 30. Season Two will be available in November.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Aloha… from Hawaai. Nat Geo WILD and Shine America have greenlit Aloha Vet, a six-episode series that follows veterinarian Scott Sims as he island hops from beaches to mountains to jungles, bringing aid to domestic and wild animals in Hawaii. The series is set to air in spring 2015.

Spike TV and Vince Gerardis, co-executive producer of HBO’s Game of Thrones, have partnered to develop the original scripted series Red Mars, based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s expansive Mars Trilogy. Robinson’s novels about the colonization and transformation of Mars have become a holy grail for science fiction fans. “This series shines a light onto many views of what it means to be human  and asks if we can sustain our humanity under incredible duress,” said Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series, Spike TV.

Oxygen Media has ordered five series under its new “very real” logo and tagline. The slate, targeting young modern women, includes Preachers of Detroit, a spinoff of Preachers of LA, and new pick-ups The Investment Club, The Prancing Elite Project, The Wilkersons and Finding My Father.

The Weather Channel has given the nod for two new shows. BrainStormers – features three weather hackers who help people solve their weather-related challenges. How Weather Created A Monster goes on the hunt for exotic and often mythical creatures in some of the most extreme environments on earth.

Production on the Bounce TV original series Mann & Wife will begin in November. Husband and wife team David Mann (Madea’s Big Happy Family) and Tamela Mann (Sparkle), stars of the Tyler Perry sitcom Meet The Browns, reunite for this new sitcom, slated to debut in 2015.

COMING UP

For the second year in a row, ABC News is going pink on October 1. A full day of coverage devoted to raising awareness and educating people about breast cancer will be featured on Good Morning America, World News Tonight with David Muir, Nightline, ABCNEWS.com, ABC News Radio, ABC NewsNow, ABC NewsOne and Fusion. This Week with George Stephanopoulos will also air a report on Sunday, October 5. The campaign also includes ABC News’ Pink Pledge, which is live on ABCNewsGoesPink.com, and ABC News’ social team will be sending out factoids about breast cancer every day in October.

Science Channel, the official media sponsor for Manufacturing Day, presents a week-long television event that shines the spotlight on the manufacturing industry with more than 200 episodes of its fan favorite franchise How It’s Made. Programing begins on Monday, September 29 at 9p and will run round-the-clock through Friday, October 3.

RETURNING SERIES

America’s Funniest Home Videos celebrates a milestone – 25 years of hilarity – when it kicks off its new season on Sunday, October 5 at 7p on ABC. The video highlights in the premiere episode include clips featuring Ice Bucket Challenges that went wrong, a music montage featuring comedic canines, and host Tom Bergeron playing “Head, Gut or Groin?”

My Five Wives, the TLC series that offers an honest and intimate look into the lives of polygamist Brady Williams and his larger-than-average family, returns on Sunday, October 19 at 10p. The new 10-part season explores changing dynamics, from potential family additions to those leaving and embarking on new journeys away from home.

The Weather Channel‘s Tornado Alley has been picked up for a second season. The show was the network’s third highest performing series of all time.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing a Halloween Programming Guide which comes out on October 13 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has a Halloween-themed programming airing from October 13-31, 2014, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey, at [email protected] no later than Friday Oct 3. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

CASTING

Noah Munck has been tapped for a recurring role on ABC’s The Goldbergs. The former iCarly star will play Naked Rob, a friend of Barry’s (Troy Gentile) who loves getting in the buff.

AMC‘s The Walking Dead has snagged Tyler James Williams (Go On and Everybody Hates Chris) for a new role. Details about the character are being kept under wraps.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Expansion continues for Bounce TV. The fast-growing network has added WMAR-TV in Baltimore, MD (E.W. Scripps Company) and WSYM-TV in Lansing, MI (Journal Broadcast Group) as its newest affiliates. The additions drive the net past 90% of African American television households and 73% of U.S. TV HHs.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

National Geographic Channels International has announced the commission of the new seven-part series Beyond Magic with DMC, a co-production between Argonon’s Windfall Films and So Shoot Me TV. It follows acclaimed magician Drummond Money-Coutts as he explores the history and science of illusion and overcomes unbeatable odds to illustrate captivating tricks on the streets of London, Barcelona, Mexico City, Paris and Singapore  and features a stunning death-defying escape stunt filmed in front of a live audience. The series premieres on National Geographic Channel in 170 countries beginning this November.

Portfolio Entertainment has acquired the rights to Seasons 3 and 4 of You Gotta Eat Here! The popular food show has been a winning recipe for the Canadian company, which now distributes over 106 half-hours of the series, including two newly acquired Christmas holiday specials. Sold in over 50 territories, the show will make a return to the UK market with UKTV’s Good Food Channel‘s acquisition of Season 3.

Electus International has announced the sale of Running Wild with Bear Grylls to Discovery Networks International. The series, which premiered in the U.S. on NBC in July, is co-produced by Bear Grylls Ventures and Electus. It will premiere on Discovery Networks International’s factual channels later this fall in nearly 220 countries and territories across Western Europe, CEEMEA (Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa), Latin America and Asia Pacific.
