TVGN is rebranding as POP, with fan-fueled programming aimed at “someone who wants to stay connected to that emotion of youth,” Brad Schwartz, the net’s president, entertainment and media, tells Cynopsis. “We noticed in the culture that fandom is blowing up. Scandal fans are ‘gladiators’; Lady Gaga fans are ‘little monsters.’ The opportunity to see the world through a fan’s eyes is a unique lane.” Target audience? “We think of them as a ‘modern grown up,’” says Schwartz. “Someone who has kids later in life, likes to work out, has a lot of disposable income.” TVGN, owned by CBS Corp. and Lionsgate, launches as POP in 1Q15 with 400 hours of original programming that expands on previously announced series including Rock This Boat: New Kids on the Block.

IN THE NEWS

Saturday Night Live alum Darrell Hammond is returning to the late night sketch show as its new announcer, replacing original announcer Don Pardo. Hammond, a regular on SNL from 1995 until 2009 – longer than any other cast member – starts his new role with the 40th season premiere on September 27. Pardo died in August at age 96.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill Thursday that triples annual funding for the state’s Film and TV Tax Credit Program; features with budgets over $75 million and network pilots will be eligible for tax credits. “Thousands of jobs” will result from the new law, intended to keep production in California, said Brown.

Teamsters security guard Amrik Singh Gill, 59, was killed in Vancouver on Monday on the set of TNT’s Falling Skies when a truck rolled down a hill and pinned him against a tree. Production was shut down Tuesday and Wednesday; the accident is under investigation.

Which new shows will viewers be setting their DVRs for in the next few weeks? CBS’s NCIS: New Orleans and Fox’s Gotham are the most-anticipated fall dramas, according to TiVo’s Fall TV Survey. NBC’s Bad Judge and CBS’s The McCarthys topped the comedy ranking.

Bad Judge led Yahoo’s list of most-searched-for new shows, followed by Fox’s Gracepoint, NBC’s A to Z, ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder and CBS’s Stalker.

Which character will get killed off on The Simpsons’ season 26 premiere?  Exec producer Al Jean wouldn’t say in a conference call Thursday, but he did insist that unlike resurrected Brian the dog on Family Guy, “When we kill them, they stay dead.”  Fox comedy returns Sunday, September 28 at 8p.

Digital TV-video viewing is up, but consumers still prefer watching television the old-fashioned day, according to market research firm Parks Associates. Households spend an average 1.3 hours per week watching video on a tablet and 1.6 hours on a smartphone, said Parks, but still devote almost 20 hours a week to the big screen.  “The percentage of video viewership among tablet households has tripled since 2010, rising from 9 percent to 28 percent,” acknowledged Glenn Hower, research analyst. “For smartphone households, the percentage of video viewership doubled from 16 percent in 2010 to 31 percent in 2014… but ultimately neither platform can duplicate the visual experience of the larger TV screen.

Next week! Are you up on the newest TV ratings tools? Cynopsis is holding a training webinar Wednesday, September 24: Understanding the Latest Ratings Advancements, with experts to guide you through. Brad Adgate, SVP, director of research at Horizon Media; Jess Aguirre, SVP, research & media planning, Crown Media Family Networks; Brian Fuhrer, SVP, product leadership at Nielsen; Bruce Goerlich, chief research officer, Rentrak, and Mainak Mazumdar, chief science officer at Simulmedia will be on hand to offer insights. Carol Mendelsohn sold a dramedy about a disgraced journalist to ABC, with put-pilot commitment and penalty. The former CSI co-showrunner will exec produce with Julie Weitz through Carol Mendelsohn Prods.’ deal with Sony Pictures Television. Mendelsohn also has a project at NBC.

ABC gave a straight-to-series order for quiz show 500 Questions (wt), from Mark Burnett (Shark Tank) and Warner Bros. unscripted and alternative TV president Mike Darnell. “It is the first network game show to combine what audiences love about serialized unscripted hits with a huge game show event,” said Burnett, who teamed with Darnell for Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?. And “Ever since, we have been trying to come up with a game show that would break new ground,” said Darnell. “I think we have finally cracked it.” Series from One Three Media and Warner Horizon Television is slated for 2015.

“My wife has never slept with an escort.” So says USA’s Satisfaction Creator/EP Sean Jablonski in the new Cynsiders column. He says a lot of other interesting stuff too, when it comes to the challenges of writing a post-modern love story.

TNT gave a pilot order to an untitled drama from Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer (Armageddon). The project, originally at HBO, is set in the world of the 1970s Miami drug trade.

A&E is adapting Mexican medical drama Nino Santo with Amblin Television. The project is being written and exec produced by Mauricio Katz and Pedro Peirano, who created the original with Pablo Cruz; Cruz will exec produce with original exec producer Gael Garcia Bernal and Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. “What sets this apart from other format adaptations is that we have the original creative team in place guiding the process to ensure their authentic vision remains intact for the American audience,” said A&E GM David McKillop.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Disabling fast forwarding during VOD viewing doesn’t hurt the viewing experience, according to a study conducted by MediaScience for A+E Networks. As expected, ad impact improved dramatically, with recall of ads increasing by over 50 percent when fast forwarding was disabled. But there was also no reduction in program enjoyment and no change in VOD satisfaction or usage intent. ”Far too many assumptions have influenced the resistance of Fast Forward disabling to date,”  Julya Fridman, A+E VP, multiplatform & distribution analytics, tells Cynopsis. “In this landmark study we have definitively proven that there is no downside to disabling Fast Forward. We at A+E Networks, see these as very positive findings for the VOD platform and look forward to exploring this proposition further with our strategic partners in the industry.”

NBC announced Nissan (tag line: “innovation that excites”) will be the exclusive auto sponsor for The Voice for the next three seasons. Integration includes an app presented by the car company allowing fans to vote for their faves live during broadcast, and sponsorship of the singing competition’s preshow “tailgate” event. “This new three-year partnership with NBC is another way that Nissan is going beyond traditional sponsorships to provide innovation to our consumers with exciting experiences,” said Fred Diaz, SVP, Nissan sales & marketing and operations, Nissan North America, Inc. Season seven of The Voice launches Monday, September 22 at 8p.

The population of affluent Americans ($100,000+ households) grew 8 percent from 2013, according to Ipsos’ latest annual U.S. Affluent Survey for Media and Consumer Insights, reporting that they are early adopters and heavy users of technology, as well as heavy consumers of traditional media. “The Affluent population has grown in size and resources, lifting marketplace spending and media audiences with it,” said Evan Borak, SVP of Ipsos MediaCT and head of its Audience Measurement Group. “It is increasingly clear that Affluent spending is crucial to the health of both luxury and mass brands, across retailers and across platforms.”
