NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
For the first time in a decade, Freaks and Geeks creator Judd Apatow will return to the small screen. His new sitcom, Love, will be distributed on Netflix, with a two-season commitment for ten episodes in 2016 and 12 in 2017. “Judd Apatow has a unique comedic voice that manages to be delightful, insightful and shockingly frank – often at the same time,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said.
 
WIGS
creators and filmmakers Jon Avnet, Jake Avnet and Rodrigo Garcia launched a new premium content production company called Indigenous Media. Fresh from its latest investment in Believe Entertainment Group, ITV is the newest investor in the venture along with communications group WPP and others. “Shortly after the launch of WIGS, [WPP’s GroupM Entertainment Global CEO] Peter Tortorici approached us with his vision for the potential of scripted content on digital platforms,” Avnet said. “We agreed and now are working to scale this model with our new investors.” WIGS will continue to partner with FOX Broadcasting and Indigenous Media will contribute financing for future projects.
 
Dish snagged more programming rights for its expected over-the-top TV service, with content from Scripps Networks Interactive’s Food Network, HGTV and DIY Network and more. Dish has similar deals with Disney/ESPN and A+E Networks under its belt, and plans to debut the OTT service by the end of the year at a cost of $20-$30 per month.
 
Amazon Studios continues to bump up its next season of pilots, ordering another comedy based on the children’s books The Kicks. David Babcock (Dharma & Greg) will write the show. Other pilots announced from Amazon include Salem Rogers: Model of the Year 1988, Down Dog and five kid’s series.
         
Vimeo added a new comedy web series called Wedlock to its Vimeo On Demand platform. The show stars Mark Duplass (The One I Love) and Jennier Lafleur (Married) as friends who become romantically involved and enlist the help of a therapist played by Rob Corddry (Children’s Hospital). The six-minute, ten episode series will debut on Sept. 29 to purchase for $3.99. Wedlock will also become available on Amazon Instant Video.
 
Italian TV station Mediaset Italy will begin streaming worldwide in the new Mediaset Italy Online for desktop and mobile devices. The service is targeted to Italians living abroad but who want to stay in the know with the country’s sports, sitcoms, news and cinema. It costs approximately $6.50 a month with a two-week trial subscription offer.

Professional Formula Drift race and stunt driver Ryan Tuerck will return for the third season of his series Tuerck’d on Sept. 23 on Network A. A new ep will be released every week, alternating between the show and a fan response video from the star himself for 16 weeks. The previous two seasons reeled in more than 8.3 million views.
 
BBC.com
added a new digital destination for the brand behind the films Planet Earth and Walking with Dinosaurs, BBC Earth. Visitors at BBC.com/earth will be able to explore ten verticals like “Amazing Moments,” “Discoveries,” “Strange & beautiful,” “A Colourful Life” and more. The site will also feature programming from BBC America’s ‘Earth Night’ every Tuesday.

The FCC received a record three million-plus comments on net neutrality by the Monday deadline for feedback (the 2004 Super Bowl’s “wardrobe malfunction” drew 1.5 million). The Google Chromecast has been updated to include apps from Disney, Twitch and DramaFever. The new Disney apps include Watch Disney, Watch Disney Junior and Watch Disney XD TV Everywhere. Chromecast now offers more than 350 apps, including Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu Plus and more.

So what do these numbers mean? “People are watching more news on YouTube,” Tubular Co-Founder and Vice President of Enterprise Allison Stern told Cynopsis. “We’re seeing multiple news formats spring up and rapidly gain subscribers. For example, Vox gained 15K of its total 27K subscribers in the last 30 days; Last Week Tonight, HBO’s comedy news program starring John Oliver, grew by 133K subscribers to a total 681K subscribers. Buzzfeed’s branch channels appear to be growing quickly, too. Buzzfeed Violet is the number one fastest growing media and entertainment brand on YouTube in terms of subscribers in last 30 days, gaining 131K of its 161K subscribers – an 81% increase. And Buzzfeed Blue is also in the top ten rising channels this month. This proves the power of the niche viewer on YouTube.”

3Q Digital announced two new Vice Presidents: Laura Rodnitzky as Vice President of People and Sana Ansari as Vice President of Media Operations. Rodnitzky has been with the company since 2009, and Ansari was previously 3Q Digital’s Director of Search since 2011.

Simulmedia added Ari Osur as the new Vice President, Product Marketing. He was most recently Director, Product Management at eBay Enterprise Marketing Solutions.

Daniel Tibbets joined Machinima as the new Chief Content Officer. He has worked for CBS Enterprises, GoTV and Bunim/Murray Productions in the past.

Veronica Mars fans are about to get happy: the series’ web spinoff Play It Again, Dick premiered on CTV for CTV Extend platform yesterday. Starring Ryan Hanson as himself, the adaptation shows the original cast (including Kristen Bell) playing fictionalized versions of themselves and their on-screen characters.
