CYNOPSISDIGITAL
09.16.16 Good morning. It’s Friday September 16, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Cost Per Point (CPP): In digital video advertising, The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) defines Cost Per Point (CPP) as a pricing model where the advertiser only pays for a video start. CPP is typically sold at 1000 impressions.
What does Vice Media have in common with Godzilla? It’s out to conquer Japan. The millennial-oriented news behemoth has inked a content distribution deal with the Japanese mobile phone giant NTT Docomo. And Vice also expanded an existing deal with AbemaTV, a mobile TV provider. Under the deal with NTT Docomo, locally-produced Vice content-as well as curated content from Vice’s digital properties-will be distributed across NTT Docomo’s digital platform. And both Docomo and AbemaTV also will use Vice’s marketing and creative services divisions to develop branded content for their platforms.
Netflix has just gotta have it. The streaming giant has greenlit a ten-episode series based on She’s Gotta Have It, Spike Lee’s 1986 debut. The series centers on a Brooklyn artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her job, her friends, and her lovers.

NEWEST STRATEGIES FOR OTT SUCCESS
Tuesday, September 20, 2016 | 1:30 PM ET
How far have you gone over-the-top?
Hear from CBS Interactive, Brightcove, Frank M. Magid Associates & People Entertainment Weekly Network
and learn how to maximize the monetization of OTT content & increase your chances for success.
Videology, s software provider for converged TV and video advertising, has partnered with Screenvision Media, a company that delivers in-cinema advertising. The companies announced that, under their pact, they will enable advertisers to “buy and execute data-enabled ad campaigns through a single platform.” The companies also say that they will give advertisers the ability to apply transactional data, along with online and offline household interest and consumption data, to their in-cinema campaigns.
Brightcom, an ad tech and multi-channel media company, has unveiled Compass, a new proprietary ad management platform. Brightcom refers to Compass as its “technological ‘brain’”. The company says that the Compass platform is designed to let publishers programmatically monetize all of their inventory across display and video advertising demand. The platform combines features such as real-time bidding, header bidding, and tag integration.

Hand of God is meeting its maker. Season 2 of the Ron Perlman-starring Amazon drama will be its last. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the news; multiple press outlets subsequently confirmed it. Season 2 will bow next year.
Just days ago, Pandora inked new licensing agreements with Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and dozens of other labels and distributers. Their plan is to launch a Spotify-esque streaming music service this year (though the company has yet to get Warner Music on-board). In the mean-time thought, Pandora is already moving forward with some new announcements. The company relaunched Pandora One, its existing $5-per-month subscription service. Now dubbed Pandora Plus, the service will allow for additional song skips, the ability to replay songs, and the ability to play music offline. The company also added some of these new features to its free, ad-supported service. Pandora still plans to launch its on-demand service, which will allow users to choose specific songs to listen to (as opposed to radio streams), by the end of the year.
According to a new study from RBC Capital Networks, Netflix received more viewership in 2015 than each of the major media conglomerates’ combined TV networks. But the study also found that, as compared to many TV networks, the streaming giant generated less than half the profit per hour of viewership. That may sound like a problem, but RBC views it as a reason for optimism: “Were Netflix to over time close both the household and the profitability gap between it and most key media networks… it could experience dramatic growth in its U.S. profitability – to levels 5X to 10X greater than its U.S. 2015 contribution profit,” wrote RBC analysts Mark S. Mahaney, Dylan Haber, and Steven Cahall. RBC kept its “outperform” rating on Netflix stock in place.
There have been some major goings-on at Time Inc. this week. The publishing giant has already launched its new lifestyle hub from People and Entertainment Weekly and named a new CEO. Now the company is announcing a new promotion: Jen Wong, formerly Time Inc.’s President of Digital, has been elevated to Chief Operating Officer. The announcement came from new President and CEO Rich Battista; it’s being billed as his first major move in his new role. In her new position, Wong will continue to oversee Time Inc.’s digital operations, strategy, and product development. She’ll also keep up her oversight of The Foundry, Time Inc.’s digital content studio. But now she’ll tack on oversight of the company’s Consumer Marketing + Revenue division. Leslie Dukker Doty, the EVP of the division, will now report to Wong.
A Disney spokesman announced that the company has cut 250 jobs from its consumer products and digital media staff – about five percent of 5,000 employees. Roughly half the cuts were video game workers; Of late, Disney has been moving away from internal game development and toward licensing. The rest of the cuts came as a result of Disney’s 2015 decision to combine it Interactive Media operations and its Consumer Products division; the company says it eliminated overlapping departments, including human resources and marketing.
