09/14/15: HBO dominates Creative Craft Emmys; Trump has Miss Universe all to himself; Fox orders martial arts drama Warrior, last seen at NBC

CYNOPSIS
09.14.15

Good morning. It’s Monday September 14, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Dancing with the Stars at 8p
FYI: Big Kitchens at 10p
HGTV: Tiny Luxury at 11p
Oxygen: Crazy Talk at 7p
PBS: American Experience at 9p
Travel: Uncommon Grounds at 11p

Tonight’s Finales:
FOX: So You Think You Can Dance at 8p
NBC: American Ninja Warrior at 8p

The first ceremony for the 2015 Creative Arts Emmys took place Saturday in LA, honoring guest performers and behind-the-scenes talent. HBO was the big winner with 29 awards, followed by 11 for NBC and eight for ABC. HBO’s Game of Thrones grabbed eight statuettes, followed by five for FX’s American Horror Story: Freak Show. Amazon landed its first three Emmys, all for Transparent, and WGN America got its first award, for main title design on Manhattan. For a complete list of winners go here. An edited version of the event airs on FXX Saturday, September 19 at 8p and 10:30p.

IN THE NEWS

The Church of Scientology wasn’t a fan of Alex Gibney’s scathing documentary about their organization, but Emmy was – HBO film Going Clear: Scientology and Prison of Belief took home three Creative Arts Emmys. And backlash from the church isn’t keeping Gibney from pushing forward. “There’s a lot more material that I’ve received and a lot more information to come out,” he told journalists Saturday. Since the IRS has yet to revoke its tax exemption, said Gibney, “there’s more to be done.”

Guess Donald Trump is a little too busy to tangle with NBC. The real estate mogul/GOP presidential candidate announced via Twitter on Friday that he had purchased the net’s half of the Miss Universe Organization and “settled all lawsuits against them.” NBC and Univision scuttled plans to air the pageant, part of a co-venture with Trump, after Trump made derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants in June. Trump didn’t mention his $10 million lawsuit against Univision.

In more Trump news, the candidate will guest on CBS’s Late Show on Tuesday, September 22. The Stephen Colbert punchline (Oreo, anyone?) will appear the same night as Obama administration energy secretary Dr. Ernest Moniz.

Is the press giving Donald Trump too much coverage? Vote in the new Cynopsis poll.

For those who read their Cynopsis early: GOP candidate Ben Carson will appear on TV One’s News One Now, a weekday news program hosted by Roland S. Martin, this morning. Show starts at 7a.

To amp up the engagement for music reality competition La Banda, Univision launched the Univision Conecta App. “Ninety-one percent of Univision’s viewers watch live, and with Univision Conecta and through cross-platform social activities, we will engage live viewers including billennials, bilingual millennials, with decisive and insider experiences,” said Mark Lopez, EVP and GM of Univision Digital. Leaving no platform unturned, Uni will also roll out activities across Facebook, Instagram, Periscope, Snapchat, Twitter, Vine and YouTube. Show launched Sunday.

The Madison Square Garden Company announced it plans to spinoff of its sports and entertainment businesses from its media business.Upon completion of the transaction, expected on September 30, MSG will be a standalone media company and will change its name to MSG Networks. Andrea Greenberg was named MSG Networks president and chief executive, reporting to executive chairman James Dolan; Bret Richter was named the future company’s CFO.

If you want The Dirt, you’ll have to go to Matt Rogers. The TV personality/singer/songwriter has been named host of Discovery’s Gold Rush pre-show, returning Friday, October 16 at 8p. Rogers won’t need to study up. “Gold Rush has such a massive following and I’m definitely one of its biggest fans,” he said. “I can’t wait to dive in.”

SYNDICATION

Season two of Monopoly Millionaire’s Club debuted over the weekend. What makes it stand out from the syndie pack? “It’s the only show on television where you’re going to see someone play for a million dollars every day,” exec producer Kevin Belinkoff tells Cynopsis. “Our players aren’t cast. They’re real people from all over the United States playing for big money. And all of the lottery winners in the audience share in the contestant’s winnings, so unlike any other show, everyone can play and everyone can win.” Having Billy Gardell (Mike & Molly) as host doesn’t hurt . “Billy is a big part of the show’s success,” acknowledges Belinkoff. “His background as a comic allows him to be funny and spontaneous, but just as important, Billy loves games. He understands what makes our games work.” Show is produced by Scientific Games Productions

Lifestyle talk show FABLife launches today, with a panel led by Tyra Banks. To kick things off, supermodel Banks and fashion expert Joe Zee will surprise a waitress who has never worn makeup with a makeover.

Vanessa Lengies (Glee) landed a series regular role on Fox midseason drama Lookinglass, centered on a 75-year-old brought back to life as a 35-year-old with near-superhuman abilities.

Another Glee alum, Jacob Artist, will recur in a multi-episode arc on ABC’s Quantico, launching Sunday, September 27 at 10p.

Richard Roundtree (Being Mary Jane) will recur on NBC drama The Player. Vegas crime thriller (“Break the rules. Beat the house”) premieres Thursday, September 24 at 10p.

Australian actress Essie Davis is onboard the next installment of HBO’s Game of Thrones, reports EW. As part of a Braavosi theater troupe, Davis’ character will play Cersai Lannister. Season six launches in 2016.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

More noise for Univision music reality show La Banda: The net announced Verizon, Toyota, Walmart, Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2, Taco Bell, Cheerios and Yoplait as official sponsors for the premiere. And it’s not just about 30-second spots. “We’re excited to feature unique branded content integrations that will raise the bar in music entertainment across TV and digital,” said Keith Turner, president of ad sales and marketing, Univision Communications Inc.

Sports programming racked up $8.47 billion in ad sales for the Big Four during the 2014-2015 season, accounting for 37 percent of total ad revenue, according to Kantar Media estimates. Top sports earner: CBS, with $2.8 billion. Biggest spender was Chevrolet, with $323 million.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

All3media International secured the first local adaptation for Undercover Boss for Latin American viewers. Brazil’s Globo will debut the format.

Cop drama Trapped became the first Icelandic series acquired for U.S. broadcast. The Weinstein Company grabbed rights at the Toronto International Film Festival.
