09/12/17: The NBA renewed its deal with Eurovision for global distribution

Eurovision and the NBA are lengthening their ties, with the operational arm of the European Broadcasting Union locking in a deal to transmit live NBA games, NBA TV, and other NBA programming to the league’s international television and digital media partners through the 2021-22 NBA season, according to SVG. The first NBA programming that Eurovision will transmit as part of the new deal will be NBA China Games 2017 when the Golden State Warriors meet the Minnesota Timberwolves in Shenzhen on Oct. 5.
 
 
ON THE AIR

The IOC released its Report of the Evaluation Commission 2028, which analyzed LA’s proposal to host the 2028 Summer Games. The report confirmed the city’s readiness to host, according to the Chair of the 2028 Evaluation Commission, Patrick Baumann. “Los Angeles of course builds on the strong proposal that was put forward for 2024, while providing all the necessary guarantees to make us confident that the Olympic Games can be awarded 11 years in advance,” he said. On Wednesday, the full IOC will award the 2024 Games to Paris and the 2028 Games to Los Angeles.
 
FOX Sports kicks off group stage action of UEFA Champions League today at 2p, opening with Manchester United hosting Basel on FS1. Meanwhile, FS2 and FOX Deportes serve up Barcelona and Juventus. On FSN, Chelsea faces Qarabag. Studio coverage begins at 2p today and tomorrow on FS1, FS2, FOX Soccer Plus and FSN with host Rob Stone and analysts Alexi Lalas, Brad Friedel and Warren Barton.
 
ESPN announced that ABC’s Saturday Night Football Presented by Wells Fargo battle between Clemson/Louisville at 8p will see Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Maria Taylor take on microphone duties at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. College GameDay Built by the Home will also be onsite. The game was initially slated for 3:30p, but was shifted after the Miami/FSU game was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.
 
NFL Network is tackling prep level football with the premiere of Football Town: Valdosta, GA at 10p tonight, followed by Elite 11 at 10:30p. Both series are the latest developments for NFL Media’s original content arm, as the Football Town franchise returns to television following a two-year hiatus while Elite 11 makes its NFL Network debut as a six-episode series. “The passionate nature of football at the high school level is one of the underlying elements that makes series like ‘Football Town’ and ‘Elite 11’ so worthwhile,” said Brian Lockhart, NFL Network Vice President and Senior Coordinating Producer, Original Content. “It’s remarkable how the game of football can be the heartbeat of communities like Valdosta, as well as the determining factor in the future of 24 young men from various backgrounds. We’re excited to bring these stories to viewers, highlighting the ways the game binds towns together and instills values and memories that last a lifetime.”
 
Speaking of football, CBS Sports made its SEC on CBS selection for Sept. 23, adding Alabama/Vanderbilt at 3:30p. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce call the contest from Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville.

CBC Sports locked in a renewal with Spruce Meadows to continue to serve as Canada’s home to its championship show jumping competitions through the 2020 season. “CBC Sports has been a broadcast partner with Spruce Meadows for 25 years and we look forward to continuing to share world-class equestrian events with our audiences for another three years,” said Greg Stremlaw, executive director, CBC Sports, and general manager, Olympics. “Canada is consistently among the world leaders in show jumping and we are proud to continue to tell the story of our homegrown athletes and the international stars with whom they compete.”
 
CBS Sports Network will to continue its simulcast of WFAN morning show Boomer & Carton despite recent legal issues with co-host Craig Carton, according to Newsday. “There are no plans to discontinue the simulcast,” said CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus.
 
RIP to Don Ohlmeyer, former producer of Monday Night Football, along with former NBC mantra Must See TV, among other programming achievements. Ohlmeyer died Sunday at the age of 72. “Don was a legendary television executive who always sought innovative ways to tell stories and captivate audiences,” ESPN said in a statement. “His groundbreaking work on ABC’s ‘Monday Night Football’ helped turn that franchise into a prime-time television hit.”
