The upcoming seventh season of Nurse Jackie will be its last. “It is with great sadness and pride that we and Showtime bid farewell to such an outstanding series like Nurse Jackie, its stellar cast led by the incomparable Edie Falco, brilliant producing team led by Clyde Phillips and Richie Jackson, and the entire Nurse Jackie family of craftspeople and artists that bring this show to rapt audiences year after year,” said Kevin Beggs, chairman, Lionsgate Television. “We consider ourselves lucky to have been part of the Nurse Jackie story and look forward to an unforgettable final season.” The hospital dramedy averaged 3.4 million weekly viewers across platforms last season.
Viacom struck a “first-ever agreement” with Sony to provide its 22 networks for an Internet-based live TV and VOD service, said the company on Wednesday. In January, Sony Computer Entertainment Group CEO Andrew House announced plans for a cloud-based service with live TV and VOD content by the end of the year. “Given our young, tech-savvy audiences, our networks are essential for any new distribution platform, and we’re excited to be among the many programmers that will help power Sony’s new service and advance a new era for television," said Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman.
Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) makes his debut as host of Saturday Night Live for the NBC sketch comedy’s season 40 premiere September 27, with Ariana Grande as musical guest. Second in line: comedian Sarah Silverman, fired after one season as a featured player in 1993-1994 season, with Maroon 5.
Phil Robertson offended again on Tony Perkins’ Christian-themed radio show Tuesday. Talking about STDs and AIDS, the Duck Dynasty star, briefly suspended from the A&E series for anti-gay comments last year, told the host, “It’s either the wildest coincidence ever that horrible diseases follow immoral conduct, or it’s God saying, ‘There’s a penalty for that kind of conduct.’ I’m leaning towards there’s a penalty for it.”
Jay Carney, who left his job as White House Press Secretary in May, has joined CNN as a political commentator. “Jay’s unique experience as both a journalist and a White House press secretary make him an invaluable voice for the network as we cover the final two years of the Obama Administration and look ahead to the coming campaigns,” said SamFeist, CNN Washington Bureau chief. Prior to his government post, Carney worked as Washington Bureau Chief for Time Magazine.
American Heroes Channel is partnering with the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust to create the Red Bandanna Hero Award, honoring men and women who have distinguished themselves by their courageous actions. Crowther (“The Man in the Red Bandanna”) saved as many as 12 people, according to survivor accounts, following the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. “Heroes like Welles Crowther are born in a moment but live on for eternity as symbols of staggering courage and personal sacrifice in defense of the greater good,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President, ID, Destination America, AHC and Discovery Fit & Health. “Heroes rarely refer to themselves as such, and so it’s with great humility and gratitude to their service that we create the Red Bandanna Hero Award in Welles’ memory.”
After four days of negotiations, SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reached a tentative deal for contracts covering TV animated production. The agreement reaches the SAG-AFTRA National Board of Directors on October 12.
The Hollywood Radio and Television Society has its annual State of the Industry Newsmaker Luncheon on Wednesday, September 24 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. AXS TV has started production on Discovering Lucy Angel, chronicling a mother and daughter’s attempt to launch a music career in Nashville. Country music docu-series from Taylored TV and Eggplant TV launches this fall.
Discovery Studios inked a production deal with Shauna Thomas (Gypsy Sisters, L.A. Hair) to develop and produce original programming. “Her collaboration with our arsenal of talented producers is sure to generate compelling, innovative programming for our clients,” said Lee Bartlett, president of Discovery Studios Group and Production.
Digital entertainment company Believe Entertainment Group inked an investment deal with U.K’s ITV. “As the entertainment industry continues to converge to meet the demands of consumers and how they want to view content, this partnership offers both companies a distinct competitive advantage,” said Dan Goodman and William H. Masterson III, co-founders, Believe Entertainment Group. “ITV will offer numerous opportunities for us to grow our efforts in multiple formats, channels and globally to the benefit of both our talent and brand partners.”
Televisa USA acquired English-language TV and digital rights to Anne Rice’s The Sleeping Beauty series of erotic novels. Rice will exec produce with Rachel Winters (Dallas Buyers Club), Endemol North America co-chairman-CEO Charlie Corwin and producer Jessica Matthews.
Robert Curran, former EVP of development at BASE Productions, has formed a new company, Fire Engine 13 Productions, to develop and produce series and specials, scripted and unscripted.
Discovery’s top-rated show, Gold Rush, returns for season five Friday, October 17 with new miners, new machines and pre-show The Dirt, hosted by series exec producer Christo Doyle. Viewers can interact with miners during the 8p pre-show; Gold Rush action starts at 9p.
Hallmark Channel has a treat for Halloween: the start of its annual “Countdown to Christmas” programming event. A Princess for Christmas airs at 8p Friday, October 31; the first of twelve new films, One Starry Christmas, premieres Saturday, November 1 at 8p.
A 48 Hours special reports on the case of Oscar Pistorius, the Olympic sprinter accused of murder, including an interview with a former girlfriend. Blade Runner: The Verdict airs on CBS Friday, September 12 at 8p.
We haven’t seen the last of Married at First Sight. The season one finale of the reality show set a network record for fyi (including pre-rebrand as Bio), delivering 903,000 total viewers and 494,000 A25-54 on Tuesday. Next comes a two-hour special reunion, Married at First Sight: Six Months Later on Tuesday, September 19 at 9p, and a one-hour “unseen moments” special, Married At First Sight: Unveiled Tuesday, September 30 at 9p.
Smithsonian Channel reveals secrets surrounding an iconic structure in Stonehenge Empire. Two-hour special from October Films, Lightship Entertainment and Interspot Films, using new technology to explore the area, airs Sunday, September 21 at 8p.
Jamie Kennedy (Malibu’s Most Wanted) shares his observations on life and dating in NUVOtv’s Jamie Kennedy: Uncomfortable. Stand-up comedy special airs on NUVOtv for the first time Saturday, September 13 at 10p.
Al Jazeera America’s Edge of Eighteen looks at the lives of teens, filmed by the kids themselves. On Sunday, September 14 at 9p, the documentary series includes a chapter on the life of an underprivileged student surrounded by drugs and violence that threaten to derail his college dream.
ASPiRE launches its fifth original series, Changemakers, Wednesday, September 24 at 8p. Half-hour reality show from Swirl Films will spotlight African-American celebs making a difference.
When Georgia Smiled: The Robin McGraw Revelation Foundation has teamed with Pivot and Students of the World to launch the #iAspire Campus Challenge to raise awareness of the issue of sexual assault on university campuses. Through October 15th, students can apply for $500 to $5,000 in funding to support their visions for programs addressing issues of sexual violence. Students are encouraged to download Aspire News, a free smartphone app that allows the user to create pre-written text or voice messages to be sent to designated numbers (like 911) with the tap of a button.
Canal 22, the arts channel for Mexican audiences in the U.S., will offer live coverage of the anniversary of Mexican Independence on Monday, September 15 at 5:45p and Tuesday, September 16 at 6a.
AOL airs James Franco Live on AOL: Making a Scene on Wednesday, September 17 at 8p. The “digitally experiential event” features the 127 Hours actor discussing his new ten-ep comedy, Making a Scene with James Franco, with a virtual audience, livestreamed on AOL.
Biggest Loser returns to NBC tonight. Anything new for season 16? “We believe we have captured something truly special in our new season,’” exec producer Eden Gaha, president, unscripted television, Shine America, tells Cynopsis. “We’ve brought in two new trainers who have infused the show with a great new energy, and our contestants this season are all former athletes, including several former professional athletes, Olympians and college stars. It’s a very exciting, entertaining mix.”
Speaking of, season 12 of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress premieres Friday, October 10 at 9p with a one-hour episode and a special guest: Jillian Michaels stops by to surprise her former Biggest Loser mentee, Tumi Oguntala, preparing to walk down the aisle after dropping 175 pounds.
The post-production crew of Bravo’s Shahs of Sunset walked off the job on Wednesday, reports Deadline, looking for an IATSE contract. Like the brief Survivor walkout, the main issue is health and pension benefits. Season four of the reality show is scheduled to premiere Monday, October 13 at 9p; a spokesperson from Ryan Seacrest Productions told the web site negotiations would take place “as soon as possible.”
Kristen Johnson (3rd Rock from the Sun) guests on season six of Modern Family, launching Wednesday, September 24 at 9p. Johnson will play a colleague of Mitchell’s.
Bravo has rounded out the cast for its second original scripted series, Odd Mom Out. Joining creator and star Jill Kargman are Andy Buckley (The Office), Abby Elliott (SNL), Sean Kleier (Madam Secretary), KK Glick (College Humor) and Joanna Cassidy (Six Feet Under).
Tim Conway (The Carol Burnett Show), Hilarie Burton (One Tree Hill) and Paul Campbell (Battlestar Galactica) join the cast of Hallmark Channel movie Surprised by Love. Romance about a young businesswoman whose life takes a turn when an old boyfriend turns up is headed for a January premiere.
Alysia Reiner (Orange Is the New Black) has landed a lead role in Amazon comedy pilot Down Dog. Lindsy Fonseca (Nikita) plays a yoga instructor.
Canada’s Picture Box Distribution acquired factual titles Playing with Fire from InterINDigital Entertainment and inMotion Production Group and Nightclub Confidential from Fahrenheit Films, to market next month.
DirecTV launched children’s channel ZooMoo, devoted to the animal world, in Latin America. A synchronized second screen application allows viewers to collect animals they see on TV and bring them to their tablets or smart phones. ZooMoo is now available to customers in Argentina, the Caribbean, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Urugay.
New host Terry Crews is winning viewers on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Growing over Monday’s premiere in HH in 31 metered markets, day two of the quiz show ranked number one again in HH in its 2p time period in New York (2.2/8) and Philadelphia (3.0/10), won both its 2p (1.7/6) and 2:30p (1.4/5) time slots in Providence, and moved up to rank number one in HH in Boston at 12:30p (2.4/10) and Raleigh-Durham at 2p (3.7/10).

The premiere of the seventh and final season of FX’s Sons of Anarchy delivered 6.2 million total viewers Tuesday night and 4.1 million among A18-49, the series’ best ever, and the top show in the demo on broadcast and cable.
The finale for ABC’s Extreme Weight Loss had big gains Tuesday, growing from .9/3 to 1.1/3 among A18-49 week to week.
In its second outing on Tuesday, Fox’s Utopia ratings dropped 55 percent, to a .9 rating among A18-49 and 2.5 million viewers. The reality show had football for a lead-in for its Sunday debut.
The series premiere of OWN’s If Loving You is Wrong on Tuesday delivered 1.93 million viewers, making it the most watched series premiere in network history. Its 1.47 rating among W25-54 was up 206 percent versus one year ago, and built every quarter hour among W25-54, climbing thirteen percent over the hour.
Sportsman Channel, launched in 2003, saw year-over-year growth in primetime the month of August: up 59 percent in HH, up 74 percent among M25-54 and up 66 percent in M18-49.
Dish Nation and Divorce Court boast they’re the only two programs in first-run syndication to grow from season to season in the A18-49 demo. Dish was up 20 percent to .6; Divorce Court hit .5, up 25 percent.
Live with Kelly and Michael was the top syndicated talker the week ending August 31, up 8 percent to 2.6. Dr. Phil, down 4 percent, was second with 2.5.
