09/08/16: ESPN preps production for World Cup of Hockey; NBCU presses Kickoff promotion; Ford parks on NFL turf

Good morning. It’s Thursday September 8, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

As the World Cup of Hockey gets ready to roll, ESPN announced that its programming will be anchored by “innovative production techniques, top-tier commentary, creative enhancements and studio programming” surrounding the games, which begin on Sept. 17 at 3:30p. ESPN detailed its production plans for the tournament, supplementing the world feed of 31 cameras with additional views as well as player and puck tracking technology leveraging Sportvision’s infrared tracking system and use a new animation package before each World Cup of Hockey 2016 telecast.

“ESPN’s World Cup of Hockey productions will bring viewers into the arena through a wide range of camera angles and in-depth commentary from experienced NHL voices,” said Mark Gross, ESPN SVP Production and Remote Events. “World Cups are all about national pride and cheering for your country. We will help elevate fans’ knowledge in this endeavor through our comprehensive on-site and studio coverage.”

ON THE AIR

As NBCUniversal prepares for NFL Kickoff 2016, the company announced plans for its ‘Big Event Strategy’ promotional push, leveraging in-house programs that include TODAY, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Access Hollywood, America’s Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior, The Dan Patrick Show and more. NBC carries a pair of games of the first weekend, beginning with Panthers/Broncos tonight, and Patriots/Cardinals on SNF.

Meanwhile, ESPN gears up for the return of the NFL by announcing a new 75-second open for MNF that features 20 current NFL stars and Pro Football Hall of Famers along with the new team of Sean McDonough, Jon Gruden and Lisa Salters. The new open debuts at 6:55p on Sept. 12 ahead of season-opening MNF doubleheader. GMC returns as the MNF showcase sponsor with its 2017 Acadia featured in the opening sequence. The new open also features an updated version of Heavy Action with APM Custom recording a new score using an 87-piece orchestra.

Bellator MMA is bringing the sport to Tel Aviv, announcing the promotion’s debut at Menora Mivtachim Arena anchored by Welterweight Champion Andrey Koreshkov/Douglas Lima. The promotion’s event will air in America on SPIKE on Nov. 11 at 9p.

NHL Network takes on the league’s 100th season in the channel’s first-ever documentary series from NHL Network Originals. The first installment, Orchestrating  An Upset: The 1996 World Cup of Hockey, debuts on Sept. 14 at 10p and will be narrated by Metallica’s James Hetfield.

The PGA TOUR debuts a 30-minute special titled PGA TOUR 2016: The Final Act presented by Southern Company on NBC on Sept. 11, chronicling the season and the FedExCup Playoffs. The program runs on the network at 1p, ahead of the final round of the BMW Championship.

PHIT America and the Sports & Fitness Industry Association will award 118 Go! Grants to school-based physical activity programs in 29 states throughout the country. DIGITAL & STREAMING

NBC Sports Digital is beefing up its Premier League offerings this season, announcing four Premier League Productions available to fans on-demand during match weeks. Programs include: Premier League News, Premier League Fantasy, Premier League Preview, and Premier League Review.

Sports Illustrated Group and DGital Media locked in a multifaceted podcast partnership ahead of the 2016 NFL season, with a lineup that will begin with The MMQB Podcast with Peter King, while two other shows will debut next week: The MMQB Podcast with Albert Breer and The 10 Things MMQB Podcast. “Our business is all about storytelling, and there are few better ways to hear the stories of some the greatest influencers of our time than through a podcast,” King said. “To have the ability to sit down for real conversations with the biggest names in football-Bruce Arians, John Elway, Michael Bennett, to begin with-and not just three-minute sound bite-type interviews is very exciting. We’re proud to partner with DGital Media and believe it will be a great addition to what we have established with The MMQB.”
 
The Olympic Channel will serve up 300 hours of live streaming for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, with the event now underway. Daily coverage from Rio de Janeiro will be available in 162 territories and includes events and highlights shows showcasing more than 4,300 athletes from 159 countries competing in 528 medal events in 233 different sports.

In other podcast news, ESPN Films and ESPN Audio are teaming up to produce 30 for 30 Podcasts  designed to “tell original stories in the likeness of the acclaimed 30 for 30 documentaries, made specifically with a narrative podcasting approach.” The first season will launch in early 2017.

CFL launched the newest edition of their mobile application, CFL Mobile, powered by technology from You.i TV. Features will allow fans to view the live 3D Game Tracker, browse game by game player and team’s stats and watch a library of videos.
