We’ll see a different side of Stephen Colbert, making his debut as host of CBS’s The Late Show tonight. Gone is the blowhard he portrayed on The Colbert Report for ten years, and that suits Colbert just fine. “I’m not just a pundit, I’m a comedian,” said the host on CBS Sunday Morning. “It is, I guess, flattering that people thought I was an actual pundit or a newsman…but it’s really nice to not have to pretend it anymore.”


With the fall season upon, what’s in the pipeline? “This year, I’d say the most obvious trend is the re-boots of famous film and TV titles,” David Madden, president, entertainment at Fox Broadcasting Company tells Cynopsis. “In development, there are, similar to last year, some big movie titles floating around – Training Day, Galaxy Quest, Time After Time, and Lethal Weapon coming our way – as well as more reinventions of classic characters like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, or the Brides of Dracula.”But, “Trends in development are cyclical,” adds Madden. “One year you’ll see a lot of female comedies, and two years later it’ll be male action dramas – so I don’t put too much stake in them.”

TBS canceled reality competition King of the Nerds, six months after the end of season three. Host Curtis Armstrong tweeted the news on Friday.

TV Everywhere may have reached “a tipping point where to get to the next level it needs to be simpler to sign in,” (amen) said Tamara Gaffney, principal analyst for Adobe Digital Index. The company’s U.S. Digital Video Benchmark report found that while 12.7 percent of pay-TV customers watched TVE on IP devices in 2Q15, up 19 percent year-over-year, that’s 4 percent down from 1Q15. Top device for TVE use in the quarter: iPad.

What subscribers of Showtime’s two-month-old streaming-only service are electing watch is “fascinating,” Showtime Networks president David Nevins tells Adweek. “As people are discovering Showtime, a lot of them just want to see what’s on the livestreaming, so they’re watching it there,” said Nevins, who adds early results for the $10.99/month offering are promising. “David came to the company five years ago, and in his first week on the job, he asked questions that you would know the answer to if you actually had a direct relationship with your subscribers,” said Showtime chairman and CEO Matthew Blank. “Now we’re going to be able to answer those questions a lot better for ourselves.”

NBC is developing By the Book, a comedy from Dava Savel (Will & Grace) and Tim Sullivan (Letters to Juliet) and Storyline Entertainment. Project focuses on a widower raising two kids based on instructions left to him by his late wife.

Disney Channel ordered Stuck In the Middle, a comedy starring Jenna Ortega (Jane the Virgin). Production begins in November for a spring 2016 debut.

It’s a dream come true for networks: rival fantasy sports platforms DraftKings and FanDuel are quadrupling ad spending ahead of the NFL season, according to the NY Post. TV ad spend through September 2: $110 million. DraftKings has spent $86.2 million on ads since January 1, according to the report, versus $20.9 million in 2014.

The second episode of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead gained 3.5 million viewers in Live+3 ratings, including 2.4 million A18-49, for totals of 11.7 million and 7.6 million.

Exclusive: Azteca America was the fastest-growing Spanish-language network for August 2015 year-over-year among A18-49 and A18-34. The net delivered a 41% increase in average audience viewing over last year and reaching 2.476 million viewers in A18-49, and nearly doubling its delivery in the A18-34 demo with 80% growth.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 1.2/4, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. Univision’s Amores con Trampa drew 1.0/4 to win 8p, followed by .9/4 for CBS’s Big Bang Theory and Mom. CBS jumped to the top at 9p with 2.0/6 for Big Brother, versus 1.0/3 for Uni’s Imperdonable.
