Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts has launched her own production company, Rock’n Robin Productions, to create broadcast and digital programming for ABC and other networks. Already in the works: a news-driven doc, a digital series for espnW and two reality show pilots. Roberts, who will serve as president of the venture, will not be giving up her ABC morning post.
Netflix snatched U.S. and international rights to Batman prequel Gotham from Warner Bros., ahead the dark drama’s premiere on Fox Monday, September 22 at 8p. Seasons will become available on the streaming service after their broadcast dates starting in fall 2015.
CBS will kick off Thursday Night Football games with a theme song from Jay-Z and Rihanna. A customized opening each week will highlight teams and storylines, backed by the stars’ “Run This Town”; Don Cheadle (House of Lies) will narrate. First of 16 games airs September 11, Pittsburgh Steelers versus Baltimore Ravens.
Newly-launched Grit and Escape struck their fourth major film licensing deal in four months, landing rights to 150 movies from Sony Pictures Television. Male-targeting Grit grabbed films like A Few Good Men and Donnie Brasco, while better half Escape landed such fare as Single White Female and Body Double. Nets from Katz Broadcasting currently reach 50 percent of the country.
The Hollywood Film Awards has found a TV home on CBS. The ceremony, honoring excellence in filmmaking, airs Friday, November 14 at 8p, preceded at 7:30p with a red carpet pre-show and topped off with a 10p post-show. Awards were founded in 1997 by Carlos de Abreu, who partnered with Dick Clark Productions last year to bring the show to broadcast.
The Paley Center for Media will host nine free livestreams of panels at the 10th Annual Paleyfest Fall TV Previews, September 6-15. Streams will be available at paleyfest.org/live.
Syfy gave the green light to six-hour miniseries Childhood’s End, based on the 1953 science fiction novel by Arthur C. Clarke, from Universal Cable Prods. Dave Howe, president of the net, calls the series “the most ambitious project for Syfy in many years.”
Lifetime greenlit a third chapter of Flowers in the Attic, according to the Hollywood Reporter. If There Be Thorns, produced by A+E Studios in association with Front Street Pictures and starring Jason Lewis (Brothers & Sisters) and Rachael Carpani (McLeod’s Daughters), will bow in 2015.
Discovery hopes to hit the jackpot with a poker night Wednesday, September 10. Gambling-themed specials include Hustling the House, from MY Entertainment, at 8p; Peacock Productions’ Casino Secrets at 9p and Underground Poker from Matador at 10p.
Joe Manganiello (True Blood) guest judges on Spike TV’s Ink Master Tuesday, September 9 at 10p. Net promises a “game-changing twist” on the tattoo reality competition.
Arts net Ovation airs the U.S. premiere of U.K. “performance documentary” hit Pineapple Dance Studios on Sunday, September 28 at 7p. Series runs for 12 eps.
Laura Vitale moves from the web to TV for Cooking Channel’s Simply Laura. Six half-hour eps featuring simple, seasonal meals (sample: “Best Friends Brunch”) launch Saturday, September 27 at 1:30p.
An Argentinean actress and model’s passion for rehabbing historic houses is chronicled in HGTV’s upcoming My Flipping Family. 44 Blue Productions series featuring Lucila Sola premieres Sunday, September 7 at 12p.

Another change: The season six premiere of Animal Planet’s Pitbulls & Parolees has been moved back a week, from September 27 to Saturday, October 4 at 10p. First-ever aftershow follows at 11p.
Mario Lopez One-on-One returns to NUVOtv tonight at 10p, with actor and high school dropout Michael Pena (American Hustle) discussing his rise to fame.
Tom Llamas is joining ABC News as a correspondent and anchor. Llamas had been co-anchor of the 5p newscast at NBC 4 New York, as well as a correspondent for NBC News. Said ABC News president James Goldston, “Tom is incredibly proud of his Cuban-American roots….He comes to us with a unique and valuable perspective on a host of hot button national issues.”
Univision News appointed Arantxa Loizaga as co-anchor of the weekend edition of national newscast Noticiero Univision. Loizaga, previously anchor for Univision’s KWEX-41 San Antonio 10p broadcast, starts Saturday, September 6 at 6:30p and 11:30p.
Lisa Ling investigative documentary series This Is Life premieres on CNN Sunday, September 28 at 10p. The former host of OWN’s Our America introduces viewers to unusual sub-cultures and communities, like Salt Lake City’s prescription drug epidemic.
ION Television is partnering with Entertainment One Television for new eps of Canadian series Saving Hope. The deal includes rights to seasons one and two of the medical drama, and makes ION the exclusive original U.S. TV net for the series. Season one aired on NBC in 2012.
FYI renewed Tiny House Nation for season two, and greenlit new series Tiny House Hunting. Both docuseries focus on the downsizing trend. Season one of Tiny House Nation raised the FYI time period average 37 percent among total viewers, versus BIO’s year to date average prior the network rebrand.

Sky announced a distribution partnership and equity investment with producers Natalka Znak (Hell’s Kitchen) and Simon Jones (American Idol) and their newly created production company Znak&Jones Productions. The venture has secured a pilot deal with ITV for Name That Tune.
What’s with all the expanded sales roles at The Weather Company (see Executive Moves)? It’s all about diving further into a predictive advertising sales model. “No other publisher has the strength in cable, strength in web, strength in mobile and strength in data like The Weather Company,” Eric Hadley, SVP sales, strategy and solutions, tells Cynopsis. “This new sales model is about combining all of those strengths to help marketers create a powerful Weather Strategy – much like they have a search strategy and a social strategy.And considering weather impacts one third of the economy, a Weather Strategy is a huge weapon in a marketer’s arsenal.”
A lot of talk, not so much action? Adweek reports that according to a survey by Forrester Research and the Association of National Advertisers, just 23 percent of marketers queried understand and use programmatic buying. Biggest concerns: Reliance on served impressions versus viewable impressions, not knowing if an agency is making money from media sellers, how and where digital ads are placed and lack of visibility into audience targeting data.

Sportsman Channel launched a “prominent sponsorship” with a firearms producer for its Sunday primetime programming. The first live broadcast of the season of LIVE with Kelly and Michael on September 3 had a 7 percent bump in HH in the 56 metered markets, its second-highest premiere in 7 years, after the debut telecast of the Kelly Ripa/Michael Strahan team in 2012.
Dr. Phil ended the 2013-14 season as the top syndie talker for the third year straight, with a 3.0 rating, up 3 percent versus the year prior. LIVE with Kelly and Michael came in second, with a 2.8 full year rating, up 7 percent from last year.
HGTV was the top weekend destination among upscale viewers P25-54 and ranked second among all viewers P25-54 for the month of August. It was thenet’s best-ever August for the weekend daypart among P25-54 with a .45 rating. During the month, HGTV achieved an average primetime rating of .52 among P25-54, a six percent increase over the same time period last year.
DIY had its highest-rated and most-watched August prime ever among P25-54 ratings (0.13), up 8 percent over last August. Contributing to the ratings jump: Holmes Makes It Right, Daryl’s Restoration Over-Hall and Garage Gold. The second season of Holmes Makes It Right is averaging 184,000 P25-54 on Tuesdays at 9p, a 75 percent increase over year ago levels.
Showtime’s Ray Donovan delivered 1.5 million viewers at 9p Sunday night, up 10 percent versus last week. The crime drama is averaging over five million viewers per week across platforms, reports the net.
TNT finished as basic cable’s top network in primetime for summer. In key demos, The Last Ship, Rizzoli & Isles, Major Crimes and Falling Skies ranked among basic cable’s top five scripted series this summer among A25-54, with The Last Ship and Rizzoli & Isles landing in the top two spots.
American Heroes Channel had its best August since its 2005 launch as Military Channel in Prime for delivery among P2+ (229,000) and HH (195,000), marking 11 consecutive months of year-over-year Prime delivery gains among P2+, and ten consecutive months of year-over-year Prime delivery gains among HH. Gunslingers was AHC’s top original series ever in Prime delivery among P2+ (356,000), HH (275,000) and P25-54 (121,000).
Discovery was the number one cable net in both M25-54 and M18-49 during August, boasting the month’s top three series for Men in addition to Shark Week’s record viewership. Among M25-54 delivery, Discovery had the top three series on cable in August with Fast N’ Loud, Street Outlaws and Deadliest Catch.
Science Channel had its best-ever August in primetime with year-over-year gains in P25-54 (up 5 percent), P18-49 (up 9 percent) and P2+ (up 13 percent). Standouts include How It’s Made: Dream Cars, up 46 percent versus the net’s year to date average among P25-54, and The Unexplained Files, recording double-digit gains per episode among total viewers and P25-54 (up 45 percent) season to date.
Destination America clocked double-digit growth for August 2014 versus August 2013 and YTD ’14 vs. YTD ’13 in Prime delivery among key demos P2+, HH, P/W/M 25-54/18-49. Buying the Beach, Hillbilly Blood, and A Haunting helped boost DA to its best August ever in Prime among P/M/W 25-54/18-49, HH and P2+ delivery.
Investigation Discovery had its best August ever, moving up 7 ranks in ad-supported cable to number 18 in delivery of P25-54 in prime year-to-date and number 14 for delivery of W25-54. In daytime, ID is the number four cable net for W25-54 and the number five network for P25-54 year-to-date.
Diane Sawyer’s last week at ABC World News brought the network the closest it’s been to NBC Nightly News since September 2009, within 40,000 viewers, and was tops in the news demo for the eighth time in nine weeks. Sawyer’s last day was Wednesday.
