09.01.15 Good morning. It’s Tuesday September 1, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Gearing up to Thursday’s Michigan/Utah battle, FOX Sports announced that its FOX Sports GO platform will deliver five different live streams for Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh’s debut with the team for the 7p game. Offerings include simulcasts in English and Spanish, as well as a “Skycam” view, “Khaki Cam,” and “CFB 360.” “Khaki Cam” will be devoted entirely to Harbaugh in a move to capture his range of emotions during his Wolverines coaching debut. “CFB 360” offers a behind-the-scenes pregame experience that begins 90 minutes prior to kickoff, documenting team arrivals, warmups, and player huddles.
Scott Van Pelt’s move to the late night ranks now has a date, with ESPN announcing that his new midnight edition of SportsCenter will kick off on Sept. 7, immediately following ESPN’s telecast of the game between Ohio State and Virginia Tech. According to the company, the longtime ESPN anchor “will introduce a different version of SportsCenter, presenting the world of sports as seen through his unique perspective.” The show is set to include a special new cut of the SportsCenter theme produced by Timbaland and new graphics as well as elements that include: One Big Thing; Bad Beats; Best Available Video; Best Thing I Saw Today; Oh, No!; West Coast Bias; and Where in the World Isn’t SVP?
NFL Network is expanding its repertoire, adding a pair of new shows to its lineup, according to Deadline. The first new series reportedly has a working title of Northern Lights, and debuts Sept. 17, following the Barrow High School Whalers, who attend school and play football at the northernmost point in the US. The other new series reportedly echoes of A Football Life, profiling teams, events and topics in six one-hour episodes.
In other ESPN news, the company is tackling college football season with a slate of Interscope/Universal Music Group Nashville Artists as well as exclusive songs from the likes of Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, Lady Antebellum, OneRepublic, Darius Rucker, U2 and more. Overall, 25+ artists from the roster will be features, highlighted by the world premiere of the new Imagine Dragons single “Roots” and songs produced exclusively for ESPN by Imagine Dragons and Lauren Alaina. Music will be featured across game and studio telecasts across every ESPN network, including the networks go-to-and-returning from breaks, as well as highlight montages and promotions of upcoming programs.
NBC saw its Cardinals/Raiders matchup on SNF notch a 5.0/9 overnight to drive the network to a win in primetime, according to Nielsen. The game was up 4% over last year’s second NBC preseason game.
With the countdown to the Rugby World Cup 2015 in full swing, Universal Sports Network launches a one-hour preview show on Friday at 10p. The Rugby World Cup 2015 Preview Show will be hosted by Bill Seward alongside analyst Brian Hightower. The show will feature a complete review the Rugby World Cup 2015 tournament format and offer in-depth analysis of the 20 nation field, an exclusive interview with USA Eagles Head Coach Mike Tolkin and a breakdown of the defending champion New Zealand All Blacks. From September 18 through October 31, 2015, Universal Sports and NBC Sports will broadcast nine of the tournament’s 48 matches with coverage kicking off September 18 at 2p with the Opening Ceremony.
Oxygen Media is tackling the Legends Football League, lining up a new docu-series Pretty. Strong that follows the players of the all-female organization. The show will put the spotlight on the Chicago Bliss and look at how the women navigate life both on and off the field.

.The largest women’s-only tennis tournament in the world is getting an overhaul. Meredith Corporation announced that the Family Circle Cup will now be known as the Volvo Cars Open courtesy of a new partnership with Volvo Cars of North America. “Family Circle’s commitment to women’s tennis began in 1973, and the tournament continues to be a premiere event on the WTA tour. Our new relationship with Volvo is a great opportunity for both of our companies to build on and celebrate the tournament’s rich history while finding new and exciting ways to expand and grow its reach with our marketing partners,” said Tom Harty, President, National Media Group, Meredith Corporation. The Volvo Cars Open will take place April 2-10, 2016 on Daniel Island.
Coke Zero laid out plans for its college football initiatives, expanding the “You Don’t Know Zero ‘Til You’ve Tried It” campaign via multiple broadcast spots, traditional media, digital, out-of-home, retail, social media engagement as well as ESPN’s College GameDay. As part of the plan, Coke Zero bringing back Section Zero and the “most coveted seat for the ultimate fan.” Students can gain access to Section Zero by showing their school spirit on game day and participating in a few classic tailgate games on campus. In addition, the brand’s 23,000-pound, 26-by-36 foot drinkable billboard will be making an appearance this season at a few ESPN College GameDay campuses along with elements that include the Drink Me! Drinkable Jersey and the Coke Zero Sip-Off Drinkable Challenge.
DIRECTV continues to play up NFL players for its “Don’t Be Like This Me” campaign promoting its NFL Sunday Ticket package. Following the likes of Eli Manning, Tony Romo and Randy Moss, the company has now tapped Andrew Luck and his alter ego, “Out of Control Beard” Andrew Luck. Click here to check out the spot.
Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment signed on Siena College Athletics for a multi-year partnership to have VWSE manage the Athletic Department’s multimedia and corporate sponsorship rights. VWSE will now oversee the locally based operation Siena College Athletics Sponsorships and exclusively manage all aspects of the Saints’ local broadcast and digital media assets, signage in all of the school’s athletic venues, on-site marketing and promotions, promotional rights to athletic marks, as well as access to tickets and hospitality opportunities.
BellatorMMA is teaming with TV sharing app Whipclip offer fans a shot to win a VIP trip to Bellator 142: Dynamite 1 on Sept. 19. Using Whipclip, fans can create a clip of their favorite Bellator fight moment and share it on Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr using #BellatorWhip until Sept. 9 to be entered to win. The promotion first partnered with Whipclip for the Bellator 138 fight and, according to the company, more than doubled Bellator’s record for total social media mentions that night with Bellator ranking #1 in Nielsen’s Daily Twitter TV Ratings in series and specials.

CBS Sports will stream the entire 2015 SEC on CBS football schedule on CBSSports.com as well as its CBS Sports mobile app. The slate begins with Louisville/Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Saturday at 3:30p. Offerings this year will include an all-22 camera angle along with the main camera angle to provide a full-field view from the 50-yard line showing all players on the field as well as access to live team and player statistics, game highlights, Twitter integration, interactive elements including polling, and additional on-demand video.
The Players’ Tribune launched a “first-of-its-kind” all-access multi media package dubbed “We Are,” that will debut with a profile of the New York Liberty as they close in on the WNBA Playoffs. The package will offer an inside look at the franchise, focusing on the players, coaches, and team staff via a combo of documentary video series, first-person narratives, photo diaries and travelogues, “We Are: New York Liberty” debuted on The Players’ Tribune yesterday with photo diaries featuring road trips, game action and team outings, as well as a video trailer for the mini docu-series entitled “1440” with the first episode premiering later this week.
ESPN Digital Media reports that it reached 71.6 million unique visitors in the US. in July with fans spending 82 minutes per user with ESPN content across platforms. Overall, ESPN accounted for 30.5% of all sports category usage on digital platforms, with ESPN.com snagging 54.5 million total unique.
The Pac-12 named Carter Westfall as the conference’s Vice President of International where he will be charged with offering leadership and driving brand strategy and operations for the Pac-12’s global initiatives, with a main emphasis on China. Westfall most recently worked for the Sacramento Kings as Vice President of Business Development.
Patty Hirsch was named Vice President and General Manager, Digital for Time Inc.’s Sports Group, where she will oversee the digital strategy and operations for our digital sports platforms, including Fansided. Hirsch was previously the General Manager of the CBS Digital Media Services division, powering desktop, mobile and streaming experiences across more than 100 properties.
