Submissions will be judged by a panel of industry experts and finalists will be announced in mid-November.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Netflix gave 10-episode series orders to scripted dramas Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias. Series are based on best-selling novels by Robyn Carr and Sherryl Woods, respectively. The Virgin River series, produced by Reel World Management and Roma Roth, is a contemporary romance; Sweet Magnolias centers on the lives of three best friends from South Carolina.
Crossing Swords, a new animated comedy series from John Harvatine IV and Tom Root, the Emmy-winning exec producers of Robot Chicken, got a green light at Hulu for a 10-ep series. Series, which will star Nicholas Hoult as a good-hearted peasant who uncovers a royal mess when he lands a plum post at the castle, hails from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and is slated to premiere as part of the Hulu Originals slate in 2020. Voice talent also includes Luke Evans, Seth Green and Tony Hale.
Killing Eve production studio Sid Gentle Films is developing a television adaptation of the play Rejoicing At Her Wondrous Vulva the Young Woman Applauded Herself, written by Bella Heesom about female sexuality. Sally Woodward Gentle, Lee Morris and Gina Mingacci will serve as exec producers; Heesom will adapt her play for small screen.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Explorer and host Josh Gates ventures beyond the grave in four-part special series Expedition Unknown: Search for the Afterlife, debuting on Discovery on Sunday, October 7 at 10p. Gates traverses the globe to investigate the spirit world and answer timeless question, Where do we go when we die?
Outrageous Acts of Science returns for a new season on Science Channel on Wednesday, October 17 at 10p. Series puts the spotlight on the funny, daring, outrageous and bizarre clips from the web, while the world’s best science experts try to explain exactly what is happening.
Bravo Media is delving deeper into renovation with new series Buying it Blind and Sweet Home, premiering Friday, November 2 at 8p and 10p, respectively. Buying it Blind follows six couples as they purchase a property without ever setting foot inside. Sweet Home follows Jennifer Welch and her interior design team, as they transform unique spaces throughout Oklahoma.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey returns Wednesday, November 7 at 9p on Bravo with more shocking revelations lead to shifting alliances that cause old school rules of friendship and family to be pushed to the limit.
After a four-year hiatus, Joe Budden and Cyn Santana return to VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: New York on Monday, November 26 at 8p. The couple star alongside several newcomers and series vets who are climbing their way to the top in the city that never sleeps.
BBC America’s five-part co-production Dynasties will premiere Saturday, January 19, at 9p as an AMC Networks simulcast event across BBC America, AMC, IFC and SundanceTV. Presented by Sir David Attenborough (Blue Planet II, Planet Earth II) and exec-produced by Mike Gunton (Planet Earth II), Dynasties follows five of the world’s most celebrated but endangered animals, as they do whatever it takes to survive and protect the next generation.
COMING UP
For the third time in the past eight months, members of the Harlem Globetrotters are collaborating with singer Trisha Yearwood. Players Hoops Green, Bull Bullard and Moose Weekes will be featured on Food Network show Trisha’s Southern Kitchen on Saturday, September 29 at 10:30a.
Showtime on Sunday, September 30, at 8p will air an interview conducted by John Heilemann, co-host of the network’s series The Circus, with Julie Swetnick, an accuser of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on the eve of yesterday’s hearing.
The 2018 American Music Awards will honor the late Aretha Franklin with a tribute to include soul and gospel singers Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin and CeCe Winans. The awards air live on Tuesday, October 9 at 8p.
Comedy Central on Monday, October 22 at 11p will premiere A President Show Documentary: The Fall Of Donald Trump, a mockumentary-style half-hour narrative special. The President Show creator Anthony Atamanuik will reprise his role as Donald Trump. Special is set in the year 2030 and looks back at the last days of the Trump administration. It’s executive-produced by Atamanuik, Peter Grosz, Adam Pally, Jason Ross and 3 Arts Entertainment’s Olivia Gerke, Josh Lieberman and Greg Walter.
NBC will broadcast A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years on Broadway, a concert-style special of songs and stars from the hit Broadway production, on Monday, October 29 at 10p. The special reunites original stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, and features guest performers including Ariana Grande, Pentatonix and the current Broadway company of Wicked. Special will be taped at Broadway’s Marquis Theater.
KIDS NEWS
Family Channel this fall will premiere original anthology series Creeped Out. Debuting with two back-to-back eps Friday, October 5 at 6p, the series will roll out a collection of tales of creepily mysterious circumstances.
Nickelodeon is getting in the Halloween spirit with the premiere mystery-focused series The Bureau of Magical Things, Monday, October 8, at 8:30p. Additionally, Nick will roll out a monthlong lineup of holiday-themed episodes beginning Monday, October 8, at noon across series including Double Dare, Henry Danger, Knight Squad, PAW Patrol, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Loud House.
Toda City and Sesame Workshop launched the Sesame Street Curriculum, the first formal curriculum of its kind for public schools in Japan. Today’s rollout marks one of the most extensive formal education programs in Sesame Workshop’s 50-year history.
Cartoon Network EMEA announced the launch of a new Ben 10 microsite, featuring games that will introduce kids to the basics of coding in a fun, interactive way. The site goes beyond games and gives kids access to exclusive content about the worlds of Ben 10’s aliens, as well as a chance to get to know more about each of the ten aliens, through character profile cards and videos.
Toy manufacturer Just Play appointed digital kids network and studio WildBrain to create new original content and manage its YouTube channel to support the launch of Just Play’s new doll brand Hairdorables.
DIGITAL DATA
Netflix is expanding its global reach. The streaming service launched a Paris bureau, which joins previously launched European outposts in London and Amsterdam. The Paris office is expected to staff an initial 20 employees. Move comes on the heels of Netflix unveiling it has 12 French series and film projects currently in the works.
Following the creative collaboration and the release of the original Minecraft episode for Adventure Time earlier this year, Cartoon Network and Microsoft are expanding their content partnership with a livestream event of Minecon Earth, Minecraft’s worldwide celebration of all things Minecraft, on the Cartoon Network YouTube channel Saturday, September 29 beginning with preshow coverage at 11:30a.
Foreign-language drama service Walter Presents struck a deal with PBS Masterpiece to bring 300-plus hours of scripted series to US audiences beginning Friday, October 5. The platform, backed by UK’s Channel 4, will make dramas available via Amazon’s Prime Video Channels. Cost to subscribers is $5.99 per month. In addition, select titles will air on PBS stations and its service PBS Passport.
SHORT FORM
CBS All Access is whetting fans’ appetites for the upcoming season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery with four stand-alone short films that will begin launching on the service October 4. CBS All Access dropped the trailer just landed for the first of the shorts, Runaway, yesterday.
Vox Media senior correspondent Liz Plank will host new short form Facebook Watch series Consider It, which tackles the issues polarizing the US. Series will feature guests from across the ideological spectrum discussing social, cultural and political issues with Plank and political consultant Shermichael Singleton. Series debuts Thursday, October 4, with new eps dropping weekly at 10a.
CASTING
Paul Sorvino scored the lead in Godfather of Harlem, Epix’s straight-to-series crime drama starring and executive produced by Forest Whitaker… Bryce Hodgson, who’s recurred since the first season on the CW’s iZombie, sealed a role as series regular for the fifth and final season.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
CBS Studios International and the UK’s Channel 4 entered an exclusive, multiyear licensing agreement covering titles from CBS’ new fall slate. The deal extends the rights to further seasons of the CBS All Access drama The Good Fight, among other series, as well as upcoming fantasy drama Charmed and Happy Together, starring Damon Wayans Jr., on E4. Also included in the deal are library series Cheers, which will be available to Channel 4; Sabrina the Teenage Witch, for 4Music; and 90210, which will be available on All 4.
