HBO has renewed “Real Time with Bill Maher” for two more seasons, extending the show’s 19-season run through 2024. “I’m thrilled to be signing such a fabulous deal with the bestest network,” said Maher. “What can I say – beginner’s luck!”

Latinx dramedy “Gentefied” scored a season two renewal from Netflix. The series follows East LA Latinos as they search for the American Dream.

“WandaVision” was the first Marvel Studios project to take home Emmys, which the Disney+ series did as a Creative Arts honoree during ceremonies over the weekend. Netflix was another big winner, and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” roped in its first Emmys – for a complete list of winners go here. An edited version of the ceremonies will air Saturday, September 18 at 8p on FXX.

ESPN reporter Allison Williams is quitting her job for at least this season over Disney’s requirement that employees be vaccinated. “I understand vaccines have been essential in the effort to end this pandemic; however, taking the vaccine at this time is not in my best interest,” said Williams, who said she is working with a fertility specialist to conceive a second child.

Despite the perception that awards show audiences (aka “rental audiences”) are unlikely to regularly tune into a network airing an awards show for its regular programming, 86% of the MTV VMAs audience had tuned into MTV or MTV2 in the prior 30 days for the 2020 awards, according to LG Ads, which analyzed TV viewership insights ahead of Sunday’s MTV VMAs. LG Ads found the VMA audience is much more likely to tune into Viacom networks than other TV viewers: They’re 160% more likely to watch MTV2, 100% more likely to watch LOGO, 90% more likely to watch BET Her, CMT, and MTV. But, as with other event television on linear networks, the VMAs drive future tune in – 47% of new viewers (who had not watched MTV or MTV2 in 30 days prior to the VMAs) tuned in to one of the two networks in the 30 days following the awards show.

The number of women and minority-owned full-power TV stations has grown, but only slightly, according to the FCC’s fifth report on broadcast ownership. The number of women who owned full-power TV stations in 2019 (the latest year for which the FCC has figures) was up from 73 to 77 – out of 1,369 – while the number of Black-owned TV stations inched up from 12 in 2017 to 18 in 2019.

AT&T will pay up to $1.2 billion to DirecTV for losses resulting from is NFL Sunday Ticket contract, a deal that expires at the end of the 2022 regular season. AT&T sold DirecTV to TPG in August.

CASTING

Billy Bob Thornton (“Goliath”) is set to guest star in “1883,” the “Yellowstone” origin story from co-creator Taylor Sheridan. The series launches on Paramount+ Sunday, December 19.

Stephan James (“Homecoming”) landed the male lead in Spectrum Originals’ and AMC Networks’ psychological thriller series “Beacon 23.” James will EP with co-star Lena Headey. The series will have a nine-month exclusive run on Spectrum before becoming an AMC original with a second window across AMC Networks platforms.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“Aquaman: King of Atlantis” premieres Thursday, October 14 on HBO Max. The three-part animated mini-series begins on Aquaman’s first day on the throne as king.

Law&Crime Network is launching syndicated true crime program, “Prime Crime,” this week. New York attorney Jesse Webber hosts and executive produces the show, which spotlights infamously controversial stories. In addition, the net’s “Law&Crime Daily” has been renewed for season two.

Nickelodeon and CBS Sports are partnering with the National Football League to slime-ify the 2021-2022 football season with new content created for kids and families, including “NFL Slimetime,” a new NFL half-hour weekly series on Nickelodeon, premiering Wednesday, September 15 at 7p, as well as another presentation of an NFL Wild Card game that will air on Nick on Sunday, January 16, at 4:30p alongside CBS Sports’ coverage of the game on CBS.

Anthony Anderson (“black-ish”) and his mom and co-host of ABC’s “To Tell the Truth,” Doris Bowman, will host new discovery+ series “House Haunters.” The hidden camera real estate and home renovation prank series will be available to stream beginning Thursday, October 7.

Season 32 of “The Simpsons” will be available to Disney+ subscribers on Wednesday, September 29. To mark the occasion, fans can now update their Disney+ profile with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Krusty The Clown, Ralph Wiggum or Dr. Hibbert.

Tricks and treats: Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel will deliver 14 series and specials as part of Discovery Inc.’s “Ghostober” programming event on the network sibs and on discovery+. “Halloween is a big holiday for our lifestyle brands, and while in past years each brand has delivered on themed programming in its own way, this year we joined forces to build on Travel Channel’s popular ‘Ghostober’ special event,” said Kathleen Finch, Chief Lifestyle Brands Officer, Discovery, Inc. “We combined the ghost-themed series and specials from Food Network and HGTV with Travel Channel’s compelling content to curate an incredible season of scary, fun and bingeable shows across platforms.”

“Renovation, Inc: Home Sweet Home” follows HGTV’s “Renovation Island” stars Bryan and Sarah Baeumier pre-Bahamas, when they uprooted their family from city life in Toronto to build their dream home in the backwoods of Ontario. Premiere date: Sunday, October 10 at 8p on HGTV and discovery+.

Today through Friday, September 17, it’s #DeerWeek on Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel. Sportsman Channel host Jeff Danker and country artist Cody Johnson will offer viewers their perspectives on deer hunting and the upcoming season.

STREAMING

Apple TV+ has ordered a new 20-episode half-hour reimagining of “Yo Gabba Gabba!”, the kids’ show that ran on Nickelodeon from 2007-2015. The series will be produced in partnership with WildBrain and Yo Gabba Gabba LLC, co-owners of the IP. Apple TV+ has also acquired the classic series and specials.

Tubi has launched a new science fiction destination, the DUST channel. The channel offers a selection of comedies, dystopian thrillers and visions of the future from Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi DUST collection.

Root Sports and fuboTV inked a deal that will have fuboTV stream Root Sports’ coverage of Northwest professional sports, including 300 live regular season games of the Seattle Mariners, Seattle Kraken and Portland Trail Blazers, as well as other ancillary programming and behind-the-scenes content.

Pluto TV is bringing a new slate of classic CBS series to the service this fall. The line-up consists of over 15 series. First out of the gate: “Diagnosis Murder,” “Touched by an Angel” and “Medium.”

GOING GLOBAL

Toonz Media Group is venturing deeper into the platform entertainment business with Toonz Media Networks. Former Zee Entertainment COO Mukund Cairae will provide strategic leadership.

Israel’s Keshet 12 has taken another helping of July August Productions’ new format “The Perfect Dessert.” The show’s debut in June saw a ratings increase of 11%.

Brian Robbins, President of Kids & Family Entertainment at ViacomCBS, is about to get a big bump up, according to numerous sources. The exec, known for his success with content for younger viewers, is expected to take on the role of Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, a job held by Jim Gianopulos since 2017.

Bunim/Murray Productions has finalized its senior team, including the promotion of Dani Wassel to EVP, Business & Legal Affairs. In addition, Erica Ross has been elevated to SVP of Development, Steve Ezell has joined BMP as VP, Development and Jacob Lane has been promoted to VP, Post Creative. Michael Driscoll has been named Director of Development and Luc Tousignaut and Jake D’Onofrio have both been named Director of Creative Development.

Havas Media Group announced that six new team members are joining its Decision Sciences, Analytics, and MarTech group.
