Over at Fox News, Brit Hume inked a new multi-year deal that has him continue as commentator and panelist across daytime and evening programs, and contributing to election coverage and political events. “His extensive knowledge of the intricacies of Washington have made him a tremendous asset to our team and a popular favorite with our viewers,” said Suzanne Scott, CEO of Fox News Media. The 36th annual international television content market will take place entirely online, as Mipcom Online+. The physical gathering, previously scheduled to take place as Mipcom Rendezvous Cannes, has been cancelled. “We made clear when we announced Mipcom Rendezvous Cannes that we would only hold the physical market if conditions permitted,” said Laurine Garaude, Director of Reed Midem’s Television Division. “Due to the ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19 and recently increased travel restrictions, we believe that Mipcom Online+ is the most effective way to move forward.” Mipcom Week is open October 12-16.

Twitter is taking new steps to prevent misinformation about the 2020 election like unverified claims about election rigging, ballot tampering, vote tallying or certification of results. Tweets which “cause confusion” about the process, or are from a candidate that claims victory before election results have been certified, will be removed. “We will not permit our service to be abused around civic processes, most importantly elections,” Twitter said. “Any attempt to do so – both foreign and domestic – will be met with strict enforcement of our rules, which are applied equally and judiciously for everyone.”

Thirty-seven percent of US wireline broadband homes did not subscribe to a linear pay-TV service as of 2Q20, according to Kagan, up from 12.5% in 2014. Nearly 30% of US homes did not subscribe to a multichannel video programming distributor. And in the first half of the year, the growth rate for broadband-only homes was 80% higher than the same period in 2019, because, “Given the economic headwinds of the first half, US households likely were looking to cut back on discretionary spending,” noted Senior Analyst Tony Lenoir.

Beverly Hills is losing a Housewife. Denise Richards is exiting Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Bevelry Hills after two seasons of contentious drama that included a cease-and-desist letter in the season finale.

Let’s call the whole thing off: Content recognition companies Taboola and Outbrain canceled their merger plan, first announced in October 2019. “Over the past few months, we recognized just how fundamentally different Outbrain and Taboola are when it comes to our values, corporate culture and business approach,” said Yaron Galai, Outbrain founder and Co-CEO, and David Kostman, Co-CEO, in an email. “This culminated in Taboola’s attempt to renegotiate the original terms of the agreement, which included $250mm in cash and a 30% share in the combined company.”

Stars are lining up for Michelle Obma and ATTN’s VOMO: Vote Or Miss Out. Onboard the election comedy special are Larry David, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, JB Smoove, Wanda Sykes, Usher, Susie Essman and LeBron James. Kevin Hart hosts the one-hour show, airing Monday, September 14 at 10p on ABC.

STREAMING

Free streaming options are increasingly attractive to Americans in the second wave of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, according to research from tubi. One in four Americans ages 18-34 stated that they’ve canceled an SVOD service in favor of using an AVOD service in the past few months, and 37% surveyed would try a new streaming service with ads to discover new content. To save money, one in four respondents reported starting a free trial and cancelling it before paying the subscription fee, with the average person who employs this tactic doing so three times. Meanwhile, 17% have shared passwords with others in order to gain access to streamers they don’t subscribe to, with 38% of respondents 18-24 and 31% of 25-34 participating in password swaps.

Streaming services are outpacing broadcast and cable networks when it comes to hiring women for key behind-the-scenes jobs, according to the latest Boxed In report. While women accounted for 42% of producers; 41% of writers; 35% of executive producers; 33% of creators, and 27% of editors on streaming programs, the percentages of women working in key roles on programs from the broadcast and cable channels “remained stagnant or declined slightly,” found the report.

Video ads and brand experiences together generate 4X greater purchase intent than video advertising alone, according to “Valuing the Value Exchange,” a new study from MAGNA, Roku and IPG Media Lab. The study found brand experiences felt less intrusive than most video ads, provided greater differentiation from traditional advertising, and seemed more fun. Key findings include:
· 60% of those surveyed were more likely to take advantage of a brand experience when the offer was relevant, and more relevant offers also served as a catalyst for driving more positive brand opinions.
· 61% of streamers who reported interacting with a brand experience were more likely to notice the ad; 48% were more appreciative of brands who served the brand experiences; 33% were more likely to consider buying the advertised product.
· Streamers with more frequency on branded experiences reported higher purchase intent (75%) and brand favorability (87%).
“The growth in TV streaming has become a CMO-level priority,” said Dan Robbins, VP of Ad Marketing & Partners Solutions, Roku. “Marketers can go beyond the video ad to engage with streamers and use branded experiences to drive more brand affinity, purchase consideration and intent. Media plans that miss this opportunity only give brands one piece of the puzzle.”

On the heels of its announcement of a three-year deal with iHeartMedia, ViacomCBS unveiled its podcast slate during its IAB Podcast Upfront presentation. New additions include: All Things Covered with Bryant McFadden from CBS Sports Digital; SpongeBob BingePants: The Rewatch, an Avatar / Korra Airbender Universe podcast and a PAW Patrol podcast from Nickelodeon; and an upcoming Catfish podcast from MTV in partnership with Wondery.
