Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Julianne Hough will co-host Global Citizen competition series “The Activist.” The five-week series premieres on CBS Friday, October 22 at 8p, featuring six activists teamed with three high-profile public figures to bring meaningful change to one of three world causes: health, education, and environment. Activists compete in challenges to promote their causes; their success is measured via online engagement, social metrics, and input from the hosts.

And in more international advocacy x entertainment, “Global Citizen Live” revealed the LA and London performer lineups for its worldwide show, airing Saturday, September 25 and Sunday September 26 on ABC and BBC One. Stevie Wonder, Adam Lambert, Chloe x Halle and Demi Lovato are among LA headliners, while across the pond Duran Duran, Kylie Minogue, Maneskin, and Nile Rodgers and Chic are among performers.

Damon Dash, co-founder of Roc-a-Fella Records with Jay-Z and Kareem Burke, is partnering with Black-owned film distribution company Homestead Entertainment to help indie filmmakers deliver their TV, film and digital content to broad audiences. Under his Dame Dash Studios banner, Dash will curate content, and Homestead will handle the global distribution for the films acquired through the partnership.

NBCUniversal boarded the VAB’s new Measurement Innovation Task Force, which will formally mobilize industry leadership in research, analytics and insights from TV publisher companies to accelerate the pace of innovation in media measurement and currency.

Discovery is cautiously lauding yesterday’s Polish Senate ruling against the passage of a controversial new bill that could force non-European companies to relinquish majority stakes in Polish media companies. Discovery owns Poland’s largest independent broadcasting group and news network. The bill will be further debated before a final decision is rendered.

CNBC signed Jim Cramer to a multiplatform deal that brings all of his media assets into the CNBC portfolio. In addition to his on-air duties for “Mad Money w/Jim Cramer” and “Squawk on the Street,” CNBC will partner with Cramer Digital to create exclusive subscription products and content aimed at the investment community.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

NBA star Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media is teaming with Netflix for “Black Brother, Black Brother,” a feature based on the Jewell Parker Rhodes book about a 12-year-old boy who wishes he were more like his popular, lighter-skinned brother. He begins training as a competitive fencer after he meets disgraced former Olympic fencer Arden Jones, and sets his sights on taking down someone who framed him for something he didn’t do.

ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Studios inked an exclusive overall deal with actor David Oyelowo and his wife, actress, writer and producer Jessica Oyelowo. The pair will focus on original scripted and unscripted series via their Yoruba Saxon productions. 101 Studios will serve as production partner on all projects. First up is limited series “Bass Reeves,” with David Oyelowo starring in the titular role.

The countdown begins. CBS is joining the New Year’s Eve concert special fray after two decades on the sidelines with “New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash.” Headlined by country stars, the special will air live from downtown Nashville.

Justin Hartley (“This Is Us”) will topline and exec-produce “The Never Game,” an adaptation of Jeffrey Deaver’s novel, for CBS. The network gave the project, from Ken Olin, Michael Cooney and 20th Television, a pilot production commitment. Hartley will play survivalist Colter Shaw, who roams the country using his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement to solve mysteries while he simultaneously deals with his own family issues.

Also at CBS, the net renewed “Big Brother: Celebrity Edition” for a third season. Season 3 is on the calendar for winter 2022, with Julie Chen Moonves returning as host… And “The Amazing Race” is set to return this season run after Covid forced lengthy production delays.

Stephanie Langhoff, exec producer of Starz series “Vida” and former Duplass Brothers Productions president, launched her own production company and inked a first-look deal with Boat Rocker. Her High Tide Productions will develop TV and digital projects, and feature films.

Pssst… “Gossip Girl” will be back for a second season on HBO Max. The streamer renewed the reboot of the pop culture classic, developed by showrunner Joshua Safran, after its first six episodes, which debuted July 8, became the best launch for a Max original drama series this year. Hulu landed “Jacinta,” the Jessica Earnshaw-directed feature doc about drug addiction that’s had a strong festival run. From ABC News and Impact Partners, the film follows a young woman who struggles to find stability and reconnect with the daughter she left behind amid her addiction. It’s slated to premiere on the streamer Friday, October 8.

Entertainment 360 is lighting up a cannabiscentric series in partnership with cannabis brands Cookies and Gashouse. The untitled series will be penned and exec-produced by “Snowfall” co-creator Eric Amadio; “Den of Thieves” director Christian Gudegast is helming the pilot and also exec producing. The drama, inspired by true events, unveils the inside story two young cannabis entrepreneurs who navigated the marijuana business from its illegal origins to its legitimate present-day boom.

Charles Wachter, showrunner of ABC’s unscripted series “Holey Moley” and “The Celebrity Dating Game,” is hanging his own production banner. Hard North Media, backed by All3Media America, will seek out entertainment formats, competition series, game shows and live events. Wachter’s other credits include ABC’s “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” TBS’ “King of the Nerds” and MTV’s “Fear Factor” reboot.

Amazon Studios notched a first-look feature deal with production company Di Novi Pictures. Helmed by producers Denise Di Novi and Margaret French Isaac, Di Novi will work with Amazon Studios to develop “Tiger Mother,” a gritty female-driven action-comedy written by Emily Dell, with Sasie Sealy (“Lucky Grandma”) onboard to direct. Also coming up under the pact is Hannah Hafey and Kaitlin Smith’s adaptation of Flynn Meaney’s YA novel “Bad Habits.”

“Sister Boniface Mysteries,” set in ‘60s rural England and starring Lorna Watson (“Watson & Oliver”), Max Brown (“Downton Abbey”), Jerry Iwu (“Halal Daddy”), Miranda Raison (“MI-5”) and Ami Metcalf (“Allied”), is in production for BritBox. Slated to debut in 2022, the “light-hearted murder mysteries” series is a spinoff of the streamer’s popular “Father Brown.”

A series about the daring rescue of more than 2,000 people from Nazi concentration camps is in the works at Amazing Film Co. “Courage on Demand,” which is housed at Thomas Peter Friedl’s production house, is an eight-part limited series about Varian Fry, the American journalist who ran a rescue network in France that helped Jewish people escape persecution in Nazi-controlled France. Gundula Leni Ohngemach (“Super Wife”), who created the series, wrote the pilot and will write and produce with Friedl.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“Fireside History with Michael Beschloss,” hosted by NBC News’ Emmy-winning presidential historian, debuts on Peacock today (September 10) at 7p. First ep examines the race to war after 9/11.

Cleo TV will debut lifestyle series “Culture Kitchen” on Saturday, September 11 at 9p. In each episode Chef Bren Herrera will serve up Afro-Latina flair with her flavorful recipes and stories from her travels abroad.

“Rachael Ray” returns for a sweet (and savory) 16th season on Monday, September 13. Guests this season on the CBS Media Ventures’ daytime show include Trisha Yearwood, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brooke Shields, Kate Hudson, Stanley Tucci and Jessica Alba. Ray will film from her upstate NY home, as well as from her NYC studio.

HBO’s unscripted series “We’re Here” returns for its eight-ep second season Monday, October 11 at 9p. Debuting on National Coming Out Day, the new season follows drag queens Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela as they continue their journey spreading love and connection across small-town America.

“Walker, Texas Ranger” will hand out justice in a new town. The series will debut on the Heroes & Icons network on Monday, October 18 as part of the net’s new fall schedule, and air seven days a week, with a three-hour block of episodes Monday-Friday from 6p-9p.

Shudder released a cast video for season 4 of drag competition series “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula.” The latest incarnation of the series is set to debut on the horror streaming service Tuesday, October 19.

TBS’ Tracy Morgan-starring “The Last O.G.,” co-created by Jordan Peele, heads back to Brooklyn on Tuesday, October 26 at 10p.

Showtime released the official trailer for its upcoming special event series “Dexter: New Blood,” which returns Michael C. Hall to the titular role. The action premieres Sunday, November 7 at 9p,

COMING UP

Digital service Struum curated a list of titles across its content partners commemorating the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Content including BBC Select’s “9/11: Truth, Lies, and Conspiracies,” Docubay’s “Financing Terror” and MagellanTV’s “Children Of 9/11” are available now for Struum subscribers on iOS, AirPlay, Chromecast and the web.

“My Husband’s Secret Brother,” exec-produced and starring Andrew Matthew, debuts on LMN Friday, September 17 art 8p. The film brings together brothers Joey Lawrence, who stars, and Andrew Lawrence, who wrote and directed the story of a widow and heiress who ends up fearing for her life after a series of family secrets come to light. Joey Lawrence’s daughter Charleston Lawrence also has a role.

More performers have been added for the “2021 Billboard Latin Music Awards,” broadcasting live on Telemundo on Thursday, September 23 at 7p. Banda MS de Sergio Lizarraga, Carlos Vives, Karol G and Marc Anthony are slated to take the stage.

Lifetime set Friday, September 24 at 8p for the premiere of three-hour doc special “Aly Raisman: Darkness To Light.”

The trailer for HBO’s “Nuclear Family,” a three-part docuseries through which filmmaker Ry Russo-Young explores her own story as the child of two lesbian mothers in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, is out now. Series premieres Sunday, September 26 at 10p.

Netflix dropped a montage-filled official trailer for “Diana: The Musical.” Director Christopher Ashley’s film of the Broadway production, filmed in 2020 at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre without an audience, will premiere on the streamer on Friday, October 1.

BET announced nominees for the 16th annual “BET Hip Hop Awards,” premiering Tuesday, October 5 at 9p on the network. Cardi B, Lil Durk and Megan Thee Stallion lead this year’s nominations with nine nods each.

Nominees are in for the “The 55th Annual CMA Awards,” slated to air live from Nashville Wednesday, November 10 at 8p on ABC. Eric Church and Chris Stapleton top the list at five nominations each. Others country artists vying for awards include Brothers Osborne, Kane Brown, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert and others.

TECH TALK

The first Amazon-built smart TV is here, along with Amazon’s latest Fire TV device. The 4K Ultra HD sets, under the moniker Amazon Fire TV Omni Series, touts hands-free voice controls via Alexa. Sets are priced starting at $409.99.

As NFL season kicks off this week, the franchise scored a few new business partnerships. It inked a 10-year renewal with Verizon, that will expand on its previous efforts to widen the deployment of 5G technology, and an agreement with airport network provider ReachTV.

Yahoo is returning to the catwalk as the official innovation partner of IMG’s New York Fashion Week: The Shows 2021. The company is partnering with designers Christian Cowan and Rebecca Minkoff on a series of immersive experiences.

BuzzFeed sales soared 51 percent last quarter to $89 million on gains in its advertising and commerce businesses, which jumped 79 percent and 82 percent, respectively. The digital media publisher is prepping to go public via a SPAC merger and acquire Complex Networks.

Nickelodeon’s cartoon trivia showdown “Tooned In” returns for season 2 on Friday, September 17 at 8:30p with Jerry Trainor (“iCarly”) co-hosting alongside animated A.I. supercomputer Nicky, voiced by Rama Vallury (“Baby Shark’s Big Show!”).

Apple TV+ is adding animated adventure “Wolfboy and the Everything Factory” to its fall kids and family slate. From creators Toff Mazery and Edward Jesse, and exec producers Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hitrecord, Bento Box Entertainment and Michael Ryan, the series debuts Friday, September 24. Additionally, “Get Rolling With Otis,” 9 Story Media Group and Brown Bag Films’ series based on the books by Loren Long, debuts Friday, October 8; and live action scripted series “Puppy Place” bows Friday, October 15.

Strawberry Shortcake is headed to the digital display case. WildBrain Studios is debuting a new series featuring the iconic character and her pals on Saturday, September 18 on the WildBrain Spark AVOD network on YouTube. That premiere will be followed by a new Roblox game, Baking with Strawberry Shortcake, launching Saturday, October 2.
