IAB Tech Lab has released the IAB Tech Lab Privacy Taxonomy, which is now available for public comment. Developed under the guidance of IAB Tech Lab’s Privacy Implementation & Accountability Task Force, the new framework addresses the need for businesses to manage personal data more effectively and ensure compliance with privacy regulations. “Our industry is at a critical juncture where the need for a unified approach to data privacy has never been more urgent,” said Jared Moscow, Director of Product, Privacy, IAB Tech Lab. “The IAB Tech Lab Privacy Taxonomy is more than just a technical standard—it’s a foundational shift in managing data privacy. The Privacy Taxonomy enables businesses to systematically approach the complexities of data privacy with a common framework.” The Privacy Taxonomy provides a standardized language for defining, classifying, and communicating personal data, a structured framework enabling organizations to accurately label and understand the data they possess in an interoperable way with their business partners, facilitating more transparent and efficient data processing, compliance management, and privacy practices.

Five days after X was banned in Brazil, rival micro-blogging platform Bluesky announced it had grown by more than 2.6 million users in just a few days, with 85% of new user signups Brazilian. By Friday, the site had added three million new users, to hit a total user base of nine million. Brazil’s Supreme Court outlawed X after the platform refused take down several accounts deemed to be spreading hate speech and misinformation, then failed to hire a legal director in the country.

Social media platform Telegram has become “a global sewer of criminal activity, disinformation, child sexual abuse material, terrorism and racist incitement,” according to an investigation by The New York Times that analyzed more than 3.2 million Telegram messages. The Dubai-based company has just 60 full-time employees, and ignores most requests for assistance from law enforcement agencies, reports the Times. In a statement to the paper, Telegram said that “99.999 percent of our users” were lawful and that while there was “plenty of work to do,” the platform was making improvements. Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, was arrested last month in France for failure to cooperate with law enforcement and complicity in crimes committed on the service.

The Justice Department has accused two Russian state media producers of providing nearly $10 million to finance online video content produced by a Tennessee-based media company reported to be right-wing social media network Tenet Media. They are charged with conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act and money laundering, using fake personas and shell companies to carry out a “secret influence campaign in the United States.” Posted Tenet Media personality Benny Johnson on X on Wednesday, “We are disturbed by the allegations in today’s indictment, which make clear that myself and other influencers were victims in this alleged scheme.”

Gracenote has launched Gracenote Watch Prompts, offering information on individual TV programs and movies to drive viewer consideration. “Streaming services are challenged to continually enhance the user experiences they offer to delight viewers, increase time spent and reduce churn,” said Trent Wheeler, Chief Product Officer at Gracenote, the content solutions business of Nielsen. “Watch Prompts leverages the expertise of Gracenote’s human editors along with scalability enabled by machine learning to deliver an entirely new dataset that will help our customers evolve and meet these challenges.”

Friend MTS, provider of video content security solutions, has been selected by several video service providers in Canada as their partner of choice to prevent piracy with Dynamic Delivery Server Blocking. The organizations have secured a nationwide court order to dynamically block access to any servers hosting broadcasters’ pirated content, including content from major sports leagues such as FIFA, NBA, NHL and UFC. Under the terms of this court order, Internet Service Providers can dynamically block access to servers attempting to distribute pirated content, without requiring a new order for each sporting event. “This collaboration shows the powerful impact that results from video service providers, ISPs, and video security specialists coming together to fight piracy,” said Shane McCarthy, CEO, Friend MTS. “Canadian operators are leading the global industry by setting the bar for piracy prevention in new, dynamic ways.

When it comes to digital marketing, most multi-location brands remain largely invisible in local searches, with the average brand failing to appear in 3 out of 4 local searches, ignoring over 50% of reviews, and leaving 90% of customer questions and engagements unanswered across popular search and social channels, according to the new SOCi Visibility Index. Key takeaways include:
· Search: While multi-location brands are doing a good job of claiming and completing their local profiles on Google, there is room for better optimization and improvement on Yelp and Facebook.
· Reputation: Less than half of reviews get a response from businesses on Google, and response rates on Yelp and Facebook are even lower.
· Social: Multi-location brands are successfully building audiences on Facebook by posting a healthy mix of photo and video content, but audience engagement on average is still low.

This year’s index shows high recognizability does not equal high visibility – household brands like Chick-fil-A, Target, and Walgreens did not make SOCi’s 100 Most Visible list, while niche and regional brands are more visible online by showing up in non-branded searches related to their most important keywords. “High local visibility in popular search and social sites where consumers are spending the majority of their digital time is no longer just a competitive edge—it’s a necessity. Yet many well-known brands are missing out on this opportunity by neglecting their digital presence at the local level,” said Monica Ho, CMO of SOCi. “Brands that optimize their local presence are not only more visible but also more trusted, driving significantly higher engagement, reach, and ultimately foot traffic and revenue to their businesses.”

Americans aren’t flocking to car lots like they used to when purchasing vehicles, according to Adtaxi’s 2024 Automotive Survey. In just the past year, there has been an increase in purchasers willing to buy a car online from 49% to 57%. Other findings include:
· 45% of Americans expressed a willingness to purchase their next vehicle through social media platforms. Among recent buyers, 67% indicated they would consider making their purchase on such platforms.
· Facebook is the most influential social media platform when it comes to searching for new or leased vehicles, cited by 38% of total respondents and 53% of recent purchasers.
· When shopping for a new vehicle, 61% of respondents said that reviews and recommendations on social media are most influential.

“New vehicle shopping has evolved significantly over the years, especially with the advent of the internet and social media. Traditionally, car buyers relied heavily on dealership visits, word-of-mouth recommendations, and print advertisements. However, the digital age has revolutionized this process,” said Adtaxi Director of Research, Murry Woronoff. “Currently, 44% of Americans believe that social is the most influential media when it comes to new vehicles – and this jumps to 64% for those who actually made a purchase over the past 12 months. We anticipate the influence of social media to increase moving forward.”
