IN THE NEWS

It’s one and done for The CW’s “The Republic of Sarah.” Executive producer Jeffrey Paul King released the news on Instagram that the series has been cancelled, noting that the show’s first season finale on Monday would also be its series finale.

Music matters. Netflix has brought original theme song, Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Want to Wait,” back to “Dawson’s Creek.” The tune had not been featured on streaming and DVD versions of the series for years because Sony only purchased the on-air rights to the track, but a deal has been struck with Cole that allows it be used across all streaming platforms. The restored version was re-recorded and re-mastered by the singer.

Food Network responded to a controversial tweet by Josh Denny related to the new Texas abortion law. Denny, who hosted short-lived series “Ginormous Food,” used a sexist slur to describe women who didn’t know they were pregnancy within six weeks of conception. The network said, “ Our working relationship with Josh Denny ended years ago and we removed all episodes he hosted at that time. His views do not reflect our company values and we regret giving him a platform.”

Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed the Ruderman Family Foundation’s pledge to audition actors with disabilities for each of its new productions. It’s the fourth major studio to come onboard, following CBS Entertainment, NBCUniversal and Paramount Pictures, and furthers the Foundation’s campaign to improve the portrayal of disabilities in films and TV shows.

Tim Tebow will be one of the initial debate partners on Stephen A. Smith’s “First Take,” appearing on Fridays. The ESPN show has also slotted Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin on Mondays. The other days will feature a rotating cast of ESPN personalities, including Mina Kimes and Kendrick Perkins.

The 2021 MTV “VMAs” announced its pre-show performers and social categories. Kim Petras will take the stage, along with Swedish House Mafia and rapper Polo G, who’ll be performing his hit song, Rapstar, when the festivities air live on Sunday, September 12 at 6:30p on MTV. MTV also announced one of the scheduled performers for the VMAs, Lorde, had to cancel “due to a change in production elements.”

Final nominees for “The 55th Annual CMA Awards” will be revealed Thursday, September 9 at 8a. The complete list will be posted on the CMA Awards website. Hosts, performers and presenters for the ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks. The show will air in November on ABC.

WarnerMedia Kids & Family is inviting preschoolers, parents, caregivers and educators across the country to a free VIP virtual party for “Cartoonito,” the new preschool block launching on HBO Max and Cartoon Network. The one-hour interactive event, “Nito’s Birthday Party,” will take place on Monday, September 13 at 1p.

FX is collaborating with artists and sculptural designers for SOUND FX, a multi-city campaign to promote FX shows including “American Horror Story,” “Archer” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” among others. Art installations in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles will showcase a particular FX genre through the soundscapes that it produces by featuring ‘hero’ shows that rise to the top of the soundscape. The titles featured in the art installations include key FX programs that have helped to drive affinity for the FX brand.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

“Reservation Dogs” was renewed for a second season by FX. The comedy series from co-creators/executive producers Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi is expected to return in 2022, exclusively on FX on Hulu.

HBO Max ordered pilot “Dead Boy Detectives.” From Steve Yockey, Jeremy Carver and Greg Berlanti, the project is based on the DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman. The series would follow detective duo Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, who decide not to enter the afterlife in order to stay on earth and investigate crimes involving the supernatural.

Kevin Hart’s HartBeat Productions is collaborating with Complex Networks, Klutch Originals and Haven Entertainment on a documentary about the Bishop Sycamore High School’s football team. After tricking ESPN into airing one of its games, the alleged “fake” high school from Columbus, Ohio garnered global attention and became embroiled in controversies including age concerns, arrests records, questions around the origins of the school itself and more.

“Axis of Time” is being adapted for television. Australian writer/director Luke Sparke has optioned the rights to the project, based on John Birmingham’s World War II alternate history book trilogy of the same title, via his Sparke Films banner and will write it. The trilogy deals with a technologically advanced naval task force from the near future being accidentally transported back to 1942 and landing in the middle of WWII.

Casting Notes: Kate Walsh is heading back to Grey’s Anatomy, reprising her role as Addison and the ABC series’ 18th season… Jamie Gray Hyder and Demore Barnes are departing NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU.” Both exits will be revealed during the show’s Season 23 premiere.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

The hard-working heroes behind the world of demolish, dismantle and scrap are explored in “Scrap Kings.” The series bows Tuesday, September 7 at 9p on Science Channel.

HGTV’s reboot of “Cash in the Attic” premieres Friday, September 10 at 9p and 9:30p. The series features Courtney Tezeno and her team of expert appraisers as they sort through homes looking for valuable treasures to sell at auction.

The Brown family rises from the ashes of a wildfire to face the loss of their beloved patriarch Billy Brown in the new season of “Alaskan Bush People.” The series returns Sunday, September 19 at 8p on Discovery.

COMING UP

National Geographic Documentary Films and Greenwich Entertainment will release “The Rescue” exclusively in theaters in October. From directing duo E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the project chronicles the dramatic 2018 rescue of a Thai soccer team.

Sinclair’s Comet and STIRR are set to commemorate “Star Trek Day” and the September 8, 1966 debut of the series in the US. COMET will air the film “Star Trek: Generations” and “Star Trek: First Contact” on Wednesday, September 8. STIRR streaming service will feature Comet TV’s special lineup of Star Trek movies; STIRR Movies channel will offer three documentaries about the series; and STIRR City channel will stream mini-series, “The Captain’s Close Up with William Shatner.”

STREAMING

Sling TV has launched an exclusive Barstool Sports Channel, gathering content from the fantasy sports and culture franchise. The channel plans to deliver special commentary, live content and more to both Sling subscribers and Sling Free uses. It will include shows like Barstool College Football Show, The Pro Football Football Show and the Sling-exclusive The Brandon Walker College Football Show.

TECH TALK

Facebook apologized for “an unacceptable error” on Friday. Users of the social media site, who recently watched a video from a British tabloid featuring Black men, saw an automated prompt asking if they wanted to “keep seeing videos about Primates.” The company immediately disabled and began investigating the artificial intelligence-powered feature that pushed the message. Facebook said it was looking into the recommendation feature to “prevent this from happening again.”

A new study from researchers at New York University and the Universite Grenoble Alpes in France will show that misinformation got six times as much engagement on Facebook as real news, according to The Washington Post. The study examined posts from the Facebook pages of more than 2,500 news publishers between August 2020 and January 2021. Researchers found that the pages that post more information regularly got more likes, shares and comments. The study will be shared as part of the 2021 Internet Measurement Conference in November.

Apple opted to delay the release of child safety features, which included scanning phones in the US for images of child abuse, following criticism from privacy groups. USA Today received a statement from the tech giant explaining that it would take time to consider improvements to the features. “Based on feedback from customers, advocacy groups, researchers and others, we have decided to take additional time over the coming months to collect input and make improvements before releasing these critically important child safety features,” said the company.

Amazon plans to release big-screen televisions in the US as early as October, according to a new report in Insider. The TVs will range from 55 to 75 inches and come equipped with Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant. The move would put the company in direct competition with the likes of Samsung and LG.

Charter Communications has awarded $1 million in Spectrum Digital Education grants to 49 nonprofit organizations in 16 states and Washington, D.C. It’s part of the company’s five-year, $7 million commitment to support digital literacy within its 41-state service territory. Funds will be used to create broadband technology programs and training in financially underserved rural and urban areas within Charter’s footprint.

GOING GLOBAL

Abacus Media Rights acquired international distribution rights to BBC Two’s “Joan Collins” (wt). The feature documentary tells the life story of the Hollywood star in her own words.

Channel 4 commissioned “The Great Big Tiny Design Challenge” from Wales-based Yeti. The competition format, fronted by miniatures collector Sandi Toksvig, challenges designers to renovate a derelict mansion inspired by real-world designs, but the catch is the fantasy home they’re renovating is doll sized.

Lineup Industries’ format “Taboo,” which explores the boundaries of what is considered acceptable humour, has been sold to Israel for the first time, commissioned by public broadcaster Kan and produced by Yoav Gross Productions.

All3Media International has signed a raft of deals for “Deceit,” Story Films’ true crime drama. Broadcasters across Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America have secured the four-part drama, which launches on Channel 4 in the UK later this year.
