Three more cast members are exiting NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor and Aristotle Athari will not return to SNL for season 48. Moffat and Villaseñor both joined in 2016 as featured players and were promoted to the main cast in 2018, while Athari debuted last season. The departures come after Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Pete Davidson announced earlier this year they would not be back.

“Scrubs” writer Eric Weinburg was accused of predatory sexual assault by dozens of women. Weinberg has allegedly been engaged in a pattern of luring young women to his family home – using his Hollywood credentials to gain trust and interest – and sexually assaulting them for more than 20 years, and investigators suggest that victims could number in the hundreds. Weinberg remains free on $3.2 million bail, which he posted following his arrest on July 14.

101 Studios and Jill Martin have teamed up to launch a platform that enables viewers to purchase items seen on TV shows. The “Yellowstone” production company and TV personality will announce 25 participating series on ShopTheScenes.com in 2023.

Scripps Networks’ Bounce and Grit are now available on DirecTV. Bounce can be seen on channel 82, while Grit is now on channel 81.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Joanne Froggatt’s Insight Pictures struck a first-look deal with MGM. The actor’s deal came as “Last Light,” the MGM-produced series that she stars in alongside Matthew Fox, is set to premiere on Peacock on September 8. As part of the agreement, Froggatt has already set up her first project, a comedy/drama series called “Love to Tell the Tale” about a single woman’s quest for motherhood.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

The 50th season of “The Young and the Restless” will premiere on September 30. CBS’s longest-running scripted series will debut a new logo in honor of the milestone, and the series will celebrate all season with the return of fan favorite characters. A special crossover episode with “The Bold and the Beautiful” is scheduled for September 26, which marks the start of the Y&R sister soap’s 36th season.

“Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings” and “The Great 8” will premiere on September 19 at 8p on Discovery Channel. Drivers will compete across the country for louder callouts and riskier racing in the new season.

Disney+ series “The Mysterious Benedict Society” will return on October 26. The show’s sophomore season will premiere with two episodes, with new episodes to drop weekly on Wednesdays.

Spectrum Networks is launching the “Spectrum News Challenge,” quizzing high school students on their knowledge of local and national news. The new weekly show hosted by Spectrum News 1 Southern California anchor Amrit Singh will debut on September 7 at 8:30p, with new episodes to air weekly on Wednesdays through February 1.

COMING UP

“Serena Williams: On Her Terms” premieres September 11 at 8p on CNN, celebrating the close of the US Open with a FlashDoc that chronicles the life of tennis titan, from her beginnings in Compton, CA, through her ascent to international prominence.

IFC will host a week-long celebration of “Documentary Now… And Forever!” Pairing classic documentaries with the landmark series, the in-person, retrospective screening series will play at The IFC Center in New York City from September 14 through September 20. For fans who aren’t able to make it to the in-person screenings, a curated selection of documentaries will be available on AMC+ the same day.

MSNBC’s “Model America” premieres on September 18 at 10p. The four-part series dissects America’s relationship with race through the lens of the people of Teaneck, NJ, a “racial utopia” turned ground zero for the Black Lives Matter movement.

SPORTS

Serena Williams’ last run at the US Open has Twitter aflutter. The platform reports that Williams is bringing new audiences into the tennis conversation, noting that 30% of users who Tweeted about Serena in August had not Tweeted about tennis all year. Conversation at the peak hour of Serena’s 2nd round match was 365% higher than the peak hour of conversation during the night session the day prior.

For the seventh consecutive year, MLB and its Clubs will raise awareness for childhood cancer during all games today. MLB’s “Childhood Cancer Awareness Day,” held in collaboration with Stand Up To Cancer, will see all on-field personnel, including players, managers, coaches, and umpires wear gold ribbon decals and wristbands during all games. Home Clubs also may plan to feature ceremonial activities in their ballparks. Club activations may include youth participation in pregame ceremonies, virtual visits from players and mascots, and other special recognitions.

CBS Sports announced multiplatform coverage details for the 2022-2023 UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League Group Stages, with Paramount+ streaming every match live. CBS Sports will provide shoulder programming and additional coverage throughout the Group Stage across CBS Sports Network, CBS Sports digital channels and Paramount+. Play begins Sept. 6. UEFA Champions League Today, CBS Sports’ live pre-match, halftime and post-match studio show, will feature host Kate Abdo alongside analysts Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards in studio.

ESPN announced that “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” rides into its second season when Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos travel to Seattle for the regular season debut of ESPN’s Monday Night Football on Sept. 12 at 8p. The ESPN and Omaha Productions’ joint venture will produce 10 Monday Night Football alternate presentations throughout the season, continuing the extensive relationship between The Walt Disney Company and Peyton Manning’s production company. ESPN2 will televise all editions of “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli,” with four presentations simulcast on ESPN+.

WWE and C&W Communications locked in a major broadcast partnership that will see Flow TV – the leading TV service in the region – become the new home of WWE Network across the Caribbean. The partnership includes all WWE Premium Live Events, kicking off with Clash at the Castle this Saturday.

ESPN hired award-winning journalist Ryan S. Clark as its newest National Hockey League writer ahead of the upcoming 2022-23 NHL season. Clark joins from The Athletic, where he was a national NHL writer and Seattle Kraken beat reporter.

STREAMING

Amazon’s Freevee announced a two-year licensing deal to bring back all 14 seasons of “The Suze Orman Show.” The deal includes multi-territory streaming rights including the US, UK and Germany – with exclusive on-demand and FAST channel rights to the full library of the series.

“Stranger Things” overtook “Virgin River” for the first week of August in the Nielsen streaming top 10. The Duffer brothers’ Netflix original series has logged 1.42 billion viewing minutes, despite a viewing drop of more than a fifth.

CASTING

Sebastian Roché has joined “1923.” The Paramount series is a prequel spin-off from Taylor Sheridan that will feature Roché in a recurring role. Roché joins previously announced leads Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Production is currently underway in Montana and the series is expected to premiere in December.

Carla Gugino has boarded the cast of HBO Max’s “The Girls On the Bus.” Gugino will star opposite Melissa Benoist, Natasha Behnam and Christina Elmore in the political drama series from Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions.

“The Big Cigar” has rounded out its cast. Jaime Ray Newman, Noah Emmerich, John Doman, Chris Brochu and Breton Edwards will be featured in recurring roles on the Apple TV+ limited series based on the Playboy magazine article about Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton.

“Jane the Virgin” alum Bridget Regan joined “The Winchesters” in a recurring role. Regan will play DJ Rockin’ Roxy in the prequel to The CW’s hit series “Supernatural.”

GOING GLOBAL

ITV commissioned crime thriller “Payback,” with BritBox to co-produce. The six-part series, produced by Jed Mercurio’s HTM Television, follows a police operation to topple a crime lord, played by Peter Mullan.

That’s TV will show episodes of “Till Death Us Do Part that haven’t been seen for over 50 years. Four episodes of the Queen’s all time “favorite” show that went missing from the archive in the 1960s have been rediscovered and will air on the British TV channel.

Cécile Gaget joined European indie studio Wild Bunch as head of film. The international sales and production veteran will lead the studio’s film group and report to CEO Ron Meyer and co-CEO Sophie Jordan.

FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier has been promoted to President of Disney Television Studios and Business Operations at Disney General Entertainment. The personnel move is Dana Walden’s first since being elevated to Chairman of Disney General Entertainment. Walden also promoted Craig Erwich and Shannon Ryan, who are expanding their current responsibilities.

DNEG expanded their LA-based leadership team with two industry veterans. Gabby Gourrier is now co-president of VFX and Diana Ibanez will serve as executive vice president of film and episodic VFX. Gourrier and Ibanez both joined DNEG from Method Studios.
