Starz gave a series order to Power Book IV: Force, the third spinoff within the Power franchise from creator, writer and executive producer Courtney A. Kemp and executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. Robert Munic (Vital Signs) will serve as showrunner and executive producer; Joseph Sikora will reprise his role as fan favorite Tommy Egan in the series, which had originally been fourth in the spinoff lineup. “Power has been one of the most successful series in premium pay television during its six-year run, garnering more than 10 million multiplatform views in its last two seasons and we can’t wait to take fans in a whole new direction as we pick-up Tommy’s story,” said Starz President of Programming Christina Davis.
ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return from summer hiatus on Monday, September 21, the day after Kimmel hosts the Emmys. The late-night show, which had filmed remotely during the pandemic, will be back at the El Capitan Entertainment Centre.
Supernatural horror series NOSA42 has been canceled by AMC after two seasons. The show’s sophomore run – simulcast on AMC and BBC America – averaged about 800,000 viewers and 350,000 among A25-54 in Live+3 Nielsens, a significant drop from season one.
The Miss USA competition is jumping from Fox, its home since 2016, to FYI, where it will air Monday, November 9 at 8p. The pageant aired on NBC from 2003-2014, as a joint venture with Donald Trump; controversial comments from Trump about illegal immigrants prompted NBCUniversal to cut ties with the organization, and it was eventually sold to WME/IMG.
Nielsen’s national TV household universe estimate for the 2020-21 season is 121 million homes, up from 120.6 million last year. Total viewers number 307.9 million, up 0.2%. The percentage of US homes with TV receiving a traditional TV signal via an over-the-air antenna, satellite, cable, telecom or broadband connected to a TV set is 96.2%, up 0.1%.

Find a different TV service, Scripps advised Dish customers in a statement on Monday regarding the companies’ retrans impasse, a dispute that has left Scripps stations blacked out from Dish subscribers. “It appears that Dish is not interested in reaching a fair agreement with Scripps. With college football and the NFL season right around the corner, we do not want our viewers to miss the sports programming they care about in addition to ongoing important local news,” said the statement. “Scripps continues to provide its local stations free over the air and through all other cable and satellite competitors and via streaming platforms like DirecTV, Hulu and YouTubeTV.” |

Also included: sanitization of shared work spaces, proper ventilation, and remote working where possible. The guidelines “serve as a resource for independent producers to help navigate the existing guidelines and rules set by the industry’s studios, unions and guilds,” said the PGA, and are being offered “for the user’s educational benefit only.”
Mariah Carey will star in a Christmas-themed special set to air on Apple TV+ later this year. Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special will “combine music, dancing and animation driven by a universally heartwarming story that brings the world together,” said the streamer. Carey will serve as an executive producer along with Done + Dusted (The Disney Family Singalong).
Mark Gordon, who left his role as President of EOne last year, has launched Mark Gordon Pictures, backed by EOne. Gordon, the producer of hits including Grey’s Anatomy and Ray Donovan, sold EOne 51% of his Mark Gordon Co. in 2015, and the remaining 49% in 2018.
A drama starring and executive produced by Arnold Schwarzenegger is in development at Skydance Television. Creator Nick Santora is exec producing through his deal with Skydance.

Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, set in 1980s England, launches Friday, October 9. This chapter of The Haunting anthology series focuses on a man who hires a young American nanny to care for his orphaned niece and nephew.
HBCU Gameday series No Huddle and HBCU 101 will return for second seasons on AspireTV on Sunday, September 6, at 12p and 12:30p, respectively. “HBCU sports are more important than ever, even as COVID-19 has uprooted the traditional roll-out of the football season,” said Tina Rodriguez, Senior Director, Programming and Acquisitions. “There remains a strong focus at AspireTV on how the programs are adapting and keeping the tradition of HBCU sports and lifestyle alive.”
Singer, songwriter and American Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina will host Jesus Calling: Stories of Faith, making its debut on Circle on Tuesday, October 6 at 8:30p. The inspirational series will tell stories about people of faith.

ID’s Serial Killer Week continues tonight with part two of The 93 Victims of Samuel Little. “Samuel little, who has gone under the radar for decades, unleashed true evil on everyone he encountered. Our special is distinguished by our efforts to look at his victims who were so often on the sidelines of society, telling their stories for the first time,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President of Investigation Discovery and Travel Channel.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will get the reunion treatment on HBO Max, with the cast taping a special on September 10 – precisely 30 years after the sitcom debuted on NBC. The special from Westbrook Media, the production studio founded by Fresh Prince Star Will Smith, among others, is expected to air around Thanksgiving. HBO Max, the US home to the full Fresh Prince library, also has reunions for the casts of Friends and The West Wing in the works.
Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears The Movie debuts Monday, September 7 at 6p, following a weekend marathon of Bears episodes starting Saturday, September 5 at 6a. A Twitch charity livestream hosted by series creator Daniel Chong on Thursday, September 3 at 9p will benefit the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in support of Black Lives Matter.
Nominees for the 54th Annual CMA Awards will be revealed this morning, September 1 on ABC’s Good Morning America. Luke Combs and Carly Pearce will do the honors for select categories, with remaining groups revealed after the morning show via live stream.
Audible and Gunpowder & Sky announced that Sheryl Crow will be the latest musician to create for Words + Music, Audible’s collection of performances that showcase musical storytelling. As part of the recently announced multi-project deal between the companies, Crow will perform her first Audible Original, Sheryl Crow: Words + Music, taking listeners her career, personal experiences and relationships that informed her artistic journey.
CNBC announced its fall slate of events. The Paley Center for Media is presenting a new Paley Impact program, “Health Tech in the Age of Covid-19,” debuting on its YouTube channel on Friday, September 4 at 12p. The discussion features leading public officials, medical experts and journalists tackling the question of what role the media plays in educating and informing the public during the pandemic.

Netflix is looking to reel in new subscribers with a “watch free” site. Included in the offering are movies like Bird Box and The Two Popes, and single episodes of Stranger Things, Grace and Frankie, Elite, Love Is Blind, When They See Us and Our Planet.
Google Fiber, which shuttered its pay TV service earlier this year, has added Philo as a third streaming TV partner, joining fuboTV and YouTube TV. “The past few months have made the choice and control that streaming provides even more critical. With live sports at a trickle and new movies coming out online instead of in the theater, knowing how to find the content you want when you want it is essential,” said Liz Hsu, Director of Product Strategy at Google Fiber, in a blog post. “And that time is going up: our network saw around a 35% increase in traffic overall as people began to work and learn and live at home full time, and we also saw an increase in streaming traffic, with people watching earlier in the day and for longer periods of time. And as always, gigabit internet makes it easy to put any — or many — streaming services to work.”
Estrella Media has entered into a distribution agreement with fuboTV. National EstrellaTV channel, as well as LA station in KRCA-62, are now available to fuboTV’s subscribers on its Latino package in the US. “Partnering with fuboTV is a great opportunity to continue expanding EstrellaTV’s distribution channels outside of traditional cable and broadcasting,” said Peter Markham, CEO, Estrella Media. “We are truly excited about cord-cutting services like fuboTV and look forward to reaching our fans on more devices and new platforms in the near future.”
The recently updated Spanish-language HITN GO app has been added to the offerings of DirecTV and AT&T TV. “We are delighted HITN GO’s digital content will be included on DirecTV and AT&T TV, while reaffirming our commitment to offer value-added services that are well suited to current digital consumption patterns and have been made available in a timely manner to keep company with Hispanic families in the US during this new normal that we are living,” said Eric Turpin, General Manager of HITN.
Plex launched 42 channels on the Wurl Network in a single day, including Reuters, The Bob Ross Channel, Game Show Central, Deal or No Deal, Wipeout Xtra, FailArmy, The Pet Collective, People Are Awesome and WeatherSpy. Plex plans to add more channels to the Wurl Network in the coming months.
Smart Cinema USA, the handheld movie theater accessible through smart TVs and mobile devices, has launched its virtual cinema app on VIZIO SmartCast. The smart Cinema app makes Asian blockbusters and arthouse films accessible to viewers at home during their traditional theatrical window, prior to typical availability through streaming services. “This launch dramatically increases the exposure and awareness of quality Asian films in the North American market,” said Jack Gao, Founding Partner and CEO of Smart Cinema. “The beauty of this partnership merges the exciting and social cinema experience with smart phones and also smart TVs.”

OneWeb was granted FCC approval for an additional 1280 V-band satellites, on top of the 720 Ku/Ka-band constellation previously approved. “OneWeb looks forward to the future growth opportunities this approval will enable as we commercialize our spectrum and execute on our mission to bring low latency connectivity to communities, governments, businesses, and people in the U.S. and around the world,” said the company.
According to survey results from the ARF’s Organizational Benchmark Study on consulting companies, 97% of consultancy employees believe that key stakeholders agree their research and analytics department gives them a competitive advantage, and 93% say that stakeholders agree that the department contributes materially to financial performance. The TEGNA Foundation, the charitable foundation sponsored by TEGNA Inc., announced a series of grants to promote diversity in journalism and professional development opportunities for media professionals and students. TEGNA Foundation also announced it was making a special $75,000 grant to Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to support its mission to protect First Amendment freedoms and the newsgathering rights of local journalists. “As the First Amendment rights of journalists are increasingly under attack, it is critical to safeguard our most basic democratic freedoms,” said Dave Lougee, president and CEO, TEGNA. “And fostering greater diversity in media to better reflect the voices of the communities we serve is more important than ever, starting with the recruiting of young talent.”
The E.W. Scripps Company and communities where it does business in more than 40 markets are raising money to ensure kids in low-income households have access to books. The “If You Give a Child a Book …” childhood literacy campaign is an annual drive led by the Scripps Howard Foundation and supported by Scripps employees and Scripps family members. Each TV station and national brand will select low-income schools and nonprofits in their communities to distribute the books to ensure they go to children who need them most. |
