In March, AT&T announced plans to launch a three-tiered TV streaming service branded under DirecTV. Now, content details are starting to trickle out. Earlier this month, Disney announced that its channels (including ABC and ESPN) would be included in the service. Now HBO is on-board as well. In sum, the new deal between HBO and AT&T secures carriage across linear TV, online streaming services, and an authenticated “TV Everywhere” streaming platform. (Those platforms included DirecTV and U-Verse.) HBO and AT&T are calling the all-platform nature of the deal unprecedented and “historic.”
Google Fiber, the Google division that’s geared toward providing broadband Internet access, just hit about 500 hurdles. Namely, parent company Alphabet has instructed the division to cut its workforce in half, reducing its number of employees from 1,000 to 500, according to The Information. The news comes in the wake of reports that Google Fiber may be looking to speed up subscriber growth by turning to cheaper wireless technology. Google Fiber initially launched in 2010. But as of yet, subscriber growth has lagged below expectations, according to The Information’s report.
One thing that’s been clear since the launch of ‘Instagram Stories’: Facebook hasn’t been shy about emulating Snapchat. That trend now looks certain to continue. As first reported by Marketing Land, Facebook will soon allow brands to advertise using the mobile-friendly vertical video format that Snapchat is famous for. In the past, marketers who uploaded mobile videos to Facebook had to do so in a square format; only by clicking the video could users see a vertical version. The new vertical clips are likely to start appearing in Newsfeeds as early as next month. Several brands, including Ruby Tuesday, Mountain Dew, and Budweiser, are already testing the feature, as noted by Adweek.

Facebook is finally going up against Amazon’s Twitch. Back in June, the social media giant partnered with Blizzard Entertainment, announcing that users would be soon able to stream their Blizzard gameplay over Facebook live. Now that day is here: The service went live on Friday, according to Blizzard. Blizzard’s games include Hearthstone, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft.
Fox Sports announced that its TV Everywhere app, Fox Sports GO, has launched for the 4th Gen Apple TV. The app is accessible to authenticating pay-TV subscribers. The app will enable viewers to access to FOX Sports, FS1, FS2, FOX Sports Regional Networks, FOX College Sports, FOX Deportes, and FOX Soccer Plus.
Quick, go to the “trending topics” section of your Facebook page. Notice anything different? It used to be that Facebook’s trending news topics came equipped with short descriptions of the topics in questions. Now the descriptions are gone, and all that’s left is the topics themselves, and a rundown of the number of people involved in the social media discussion. According to Quartz, Facebook has dismissed the 15 to 18 contractors who wrote those trending topic descriptions. The company, it seems, was worried about accusations of bias and editorializing.
VR is getting the retail treatment. Best Buy began rolling out demonstrations for the Oculus Rift VR headset back in May. But as first noted by Bloomberg, the retail giant is picking up the pace: Best Buy will have Oculus Rift demos in 500 stores by the time the holiday shopping season rolls around. Bloomberg also reports that Best Buy is running 200 demos for Sony’s Playstation VR headset, which doesn’t actually launch until October. (The PlayStation VR demos rotate between store locations.) Best Buy seems to be betting that, sooner rather than later, everyday Best Buy shoppers might be swiping their credit cards for high-end VR headsets.

The Univision-owned multiplatform media company Fusion announced some new additions to its digital sales team. Corrie Katcher and Jen Finger are joining as Sales Directors. Katcher joins from Snapchat, where she served as Director of Integrated Sales, while Finger hails from the News Corp-owned video ad tech company Unruly, where she served as an account executive. Lizet Alvarez is joining Fusion as West Coast Sales Director, based in Los Angeles. Alvarez most recently worked for Conde Nast’s Teen Vogue and Teenvogue.com. And Jamel Franklin, who will serve as Fusion’s Midwest Sales Director (based in Chicago), most recently worked for Channel Factory, an online video distribution and data company.
