Consumers are opting for Amazon Fire TV devices over Apple TV, according to a new survey from Parks Associates. Roku (34%) continued to lead the way in consumer set-top-box choice, followed by Google Chromecast (23%) devices. New entrant Amazon snatched third place from Apple, which held the slot in 2014. “The market consolidation around these four brands forces new entrants to develop more creative features and functionality to tap into the strong consumer demand for streaming content,” said Barbara Kraus, Director of Research, Parks Associates. The report found that 20 % of U.S. broadband households own at least one streaming media player, such as a Roku 3, Amazon Fire TV or Apple TV; 8% own at least one streaming stick, such as a Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV Stick, or Roku’s HDMI Streaming Stick, and 2 percent own both types of devices.
 
 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
In more Amazon news…the e-commerce company signed a multiyear content-licensing deal with Open Road Films landing Prime Instant Video exclusive streaming rights to theatrical releases. Films coming to Prime users starting in 2017 include titles such as Fifty Shades of Black, thriller Triple 9 and Mother’s Day.
 
Shareablee
signed an agreement with Bloomberg LP to bring social data to Bloomberg Terminals starting in September. Initially, Shareablee will provide info on 134 public retail companies. “The data will enable our research team and clients to monitor and analyze how different brands interact with their audience online and to what extent a brand’s efforts gain traction in the market,” said Chen Grazutis, a retail analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. “The ability to track key performance data has become imperative in order to identify industry trends.”
 
 

CONTENT MEDIA

 
YouTube expanded its music catalogue, adding more than 1,000 new, royalty-free tracks for its YouTube Audio Library. The top five most popular tracks used by creators from the collection include “The Creek” and “Mr. Pink” by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena, “Good Starts” and “Sound Off” by Jingle Punks and “Dub Zap” by Gunnar Olsen. Creators can use the free songs for background music and sound effects.
 
On the heels of its CraveOnline relaunch, Evolve Media’s TotalBeauty announced the winners of its sixth annual TotalBeauty Awards. For the Readers’ Choice division of the awards, the publication’s 11 million monthly readers (comScore, June 2015) cast votes for their all-time favorite products, tools and technologies. “TotalBeauty is the largest beauty-focused site, and now as part of the TotallyHer Style and Beauty portfolio has even greater visibility – it’s no wonder that we received more votes than ever before,” Rebecca Schmitt, General Manager of TotallyHer Media, told Cynopsis. entered into a partnership with Miami Dade College to implement fellowship and internship programs in the digital fields of animation and game development. Beginning in the summer of 2016, a student from MDC’s new academic program in Computer Programming and Analysis – with concentrations in Animation and Game Art or Game Development and Design– will be selected as the first Fellow assigned to Univision’s Digital Newsroom.

VOD Service CuriosityStream is going back to school with two original series for kids and parents this fall. The shows, Quarx and Mind Blowing Breakthroughs, will each feature 26 episodes focused on history and science. CuriosityStream is also offering a special back-to-school subscription discount to new members who sign up online.
 
Celebrity wardrobe stylist Ali Levine joined OWNZONES with a new channel for the ad-free network. “We’re always looking for ways to tap into new audiences, and we’re thrilled to have Ali and her army of fashion followers join the OWNZONES family,” Dan Goman, Founder and CEO of OWNZONES, told Cynopsis. “She brings such great energy and enthusiasm to everything she does, and her content is extremely engaging – it’s exactly what we were looking for.” Levine credits include styling for TV series such as Happily Divorced, In Time and New Girl.

The Digital Place Based Advertising Association (DPAA) released its annual survey of media planners to identify the disruption in television and trends in mobile and programmatic advertising. Key results include:
–      More than two-thirds (68 percent) of media planners rated TV high in effectiveness today, but just under one-half (49 percent) believe TV will be as effective in three years.
–      Planners expect other screens’ shares of media budgets to rise over the next three years: +86 percent mobile, +67 percent online, +34 percent digital-place based media (DPB).
–      Nearly nine out of ten planners (88 percent) said they are buying programmatically for all brands they work on today. Among this group, 28 percent of their total media spend is being bought programmatically. Three years from now, they expect this figure to grow to 48 percent of budgets.
