08/21/15: Twitter getting more into video; YouTube stars upset with Facebook; Amazon finally ditching Google TV

Good morning. It’s Friday August 21, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Twitter has made its mobile ad network available to a wider group of marketers and is introducing new ad formats including video, the Wall Street Journal reports. A select group were granted access to its network last year, but now all advertisers that have dedicated account managers at Twitter will be able to use the newly named Twitter Audience Platform that can reach 700 million month users. Of those, 300 million are on Twitter and the rest are across partner apps.
Since 2007, YouTube has shelled out more than $1 billion to its stars as part of an ad revenue-sharing agreement. Now a number of those stars are unhappy with Facebook, where YouTube videos can be uploaded and viewed without any ad revenue being paid out to the creator or YouTube, NPR reports. According to Ogilvy and Tubular Labs, 725 of the top thousand videos on Facebook were re-uploads from other sources. Facebook wouldn’t speak directly to NPR, but directed it to a blog post about how it “takes intellectual property rights seriously and is trying to come up with a solution.” The company plans to introduce a limited revenue-sharing program later this year.

Comcast Corp. recently acquired This Technology LLC, a video delivery and advertisement technology specialist that provide solutions for metadata management and integration of diversified video infrastructures with a wide range of ad server platforms. In the last year, Comcast has acquired online video ad-serving company FreeWheel Inc. and targeted TV ad provider Visible World.
National Cinemedia has signed a long term data licensing agreement with Movio, which specializes in marketing data, analysis, insights, and campaign creation and management for theatrical exhibitors, studios and film distributors. NCM is the first licensed user for Movio’s “Movio Media” market research platform, which provides insights into U.S. moviegoers’ behavior.

William Morris Endeavor Entertainment has signed on five big digital influencers from across the globe, including YouTube vlogger Vsauce3, otherwise known as Jake Roper, reports Variety. The others are South Africa’s Caspar Lee, Australian fitness personality and model Emily Skye and MyCupcakeAddiction’s Elise Strachan as well as comedians and rappers David and Andrew Fung, aka the Fung Brothers.

Amazon Prime Instant Video
will stop supporting streaming to Google TV on September 14. Although Google TV has not been a product supported by Google since 2014, there are still users, who were directed to alternative streaming platforms such as Roku, Fire TV, iOS, Android phones/tablets, and game consoles.
Anthony Michael Hall is no stranger to satirical comedy – in the mid-‘80s, he became the youngest cast member of all time on Saturday Night Live at the age of 17. Thirty years later, he’s joining Brad Pitt as part of the cast of War Machine, the upcoming satire from Netflix.

Google is testing promoted video ads in search results, DigiDay reports. The word is that they are in a limited test and have been discussed by Google with representatives of the ad industry. Separately, Google and Mountain Dew have tested a number of different mobile formats from short Vine-esque ads to longer-form and interactive spots, MediaPost reports. The ad that scored best lacked a traditional storyline or structure and was three times longer than other edits of the same ad, coming in at one minute and 33 seconds. It was viewed at a 26% higher rate than other edits of the same product ad, on average for one minute and nine seconds.

TV ad spending was down 2 percent and social media surged 93 percent. The verticals most responsible for spending on those ads include pharmaceuticals, non-alcoholic beverages and quick-serve restaurants.
