Digital and socially driven content will launch the challenge, leading up to the announcement of the semifinalists and the series launch. Short-form, sharable content related to the contest will span TNT, Adult Swim, truTV, HLN, CNN and Bleacher Report. “This is much more than just a linear TV series,” said Burnett. “This is the next evolution of storytelling, told simultaneously across many platforms and in many different ways. This is the future.”

IN THE NEWS

NBCUniversal said Tuesday it is investing $200 in news site BuzzFeed. “Buzzfeed has built an exceptional global company that harmonizes technology, data and superior editorial abilities to create and share content in innovative ways,” said NBCU CEO Steve Burke. Bunim/Murray (The Real World) signed an exclusive production pact with WikkedCat Entertainment. “As we talked about the shows we all want to make, it became clear that there was a huge opportunity to partner, especially with their amazing access and our shared celeb-reality expertise,” said BMP CEO Gil Goldschein.

Cartoon Network Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher says the development process for a series at Cartoon Network Studios does not begin with a script but with the visual. A successful pitch has “a world, look, tone and characters that we haven’t seen before. A visually funny take which clearly reveals the authors hand, and how they see the world,” he says. ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

PwC just released its Q2 2015 Deal Insights report on the media, entertainment and communications industries, and the company is “bullish” on ad spend across mediums for 2016, thanks to the presidential election. “The real question will be around the 2017 landscape when electoral funds fade away and digital consumption patterns have had additional time to proliferate,” Bart Spiegel, entertainment, media & communications, deals partner, US, tells Cynopsis. “U.S. TV advertising spend is projected to decline at a -1.6% compounded annual growth rate for 2015- 2019 while digital advertising over the 5-year period is projected to grow at 11.5%. At this rate, Internet based advertising would surpass TV advertising by 2018, led by Mobile and Paid Search.”

Horizon Media and Innocean Worldwide are launching standalone media agency network Canvas Worldwide. “Marketplace dynamics are right for a new media agency network to breathe creativity and innovation into the advertising industry,” said Bill Koenigsberg, president, CEO and founder of Horizon Media. “We are operating in a media landscape and a business environment that is in constant flux. We have a white canvas to invent, create, grow and transform the industry in the process.” Along for the ride as the new entity’s first clients: Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America.

Buzzy late night “is where the action is right now,” president of ad agency Dentsu Billie Gold tells the LA Times, which points out the haul for ad spending in 2014 for late night talk shows was $597.5 million, up 14 percent over the prior year. Thank live viewing: 81 percent of NBC’s Tonight Show viewers watch the show live, while 92 percent catch ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live in real time, notes the Times.

Ad-blocking software is taking an increasingly bigger bite out of ad revenue, according to a study released by Adobe Systems and PageFair. During the first half of 2015, the number of users of the software in the U.S. rose 48 percent, to 45 million; globally, the estimated loss of revenue is over $21.8 billion. Most likely to block ads: visitors to gaming Web sites.

Wayfair is part of an effort by Fyi and non-profit Make It Right to build a sustainable and innovative tiny home for a teacher in New Orleans, 10 years after Katrina. “To be able to present a new home to a local recipient, during the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, is a powerful way for FYI to give back to such a deserving community,” said Jana Bennett, president of Fyi and LMN. Home decor destination Wayfair will furnish the new home.
