Major League Baseball is working on a deal with Fox, which holds the local media rights to 15 MLB teams, to allow authenticated local streaming of live games, reports Sports Business Journal. Streaming has been a subject of conversation between the two entities for years; only one team, the Toronto Blue Jays, currently streams games locally. In the past, the league has insisted that streamed games should all come through MLB.com. The league will charge each sports network a rights fee in the mid- to high seven figures.
Advertising spending in the U.S. is projected to grow by 4.9% in 2015, reaching $172 billion, the highest growth rate for adverting spending in the past decade, Broad Street Alerts reports. Digital media growth is now expected to rise 15.7% this year versus the 12.8% predicted earlier, and by 2017, digital ad sales are projected to reach $72 billion, with television ad sales hitting $70.5 billion.
Fiji is about to have access to digital television. A soft launch is anticipated by October, with the full launch a month later in one area. The hope is to have it fully available throughout the country by March of 2016. Around $16 million is being initially invested.
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
Global streaming giant Netflix is teaming with actor-filmmaker Christopher Guest to release his next film, Mascots, next year. The mockumentary format that Guest is famous for will this time focus on the men and women competing in the 8th World Mascot Association championships, part of Netflix’s ongoing efforts to be a stronger player in feature-film releases. The streaming service already has a four-film deal with Adam Sandler as well as worldwide rights to Brad Pitt’s War Machine and Kevin James’s The True Memoirs of an International Assassin, among others.
Endemol Shine has acquired a majority stake in the seven-year-old London-based animation firm Simon’s Cat, which produces the online series of the same name. Simon’s Cat is one of the most popular shows on Endemol Beyond’s YouTube multichannel network, with 3.5 million subscribers and more than 650 million views.
truTV and Tumblr are gearing up for the Tuesday night second-season premiere of Hack My Life with a Tumblr Challenge for fans to send in their best life-hacks. The best ones will be featured in during the Tumblr’s Hack Mail section of the show.
Warner Music Group is in talks with Vevo, the digital-music company owned by Universal Music Group, Sony Music, Google, and Abu Dhabi Media Group, about showcasing its music videos. The talks are being driven by Vevo, which seems to be attempting to amass the videos of as many big-name artists as possible in order to do battle with YouTube, which has scored well financially with the advertising dollars spent on music videos on its site. A deal between Vevo and Warner does not appear imminent.
Myx TV, the fast-growing English-language, multicultural Asian-American entertainment network, is expanding its digital offerings, including the debut of three new, original series exclusively for the Myx TV YouTube channel: The Alternative, Buddha Smash, and Snaxxx.
Sundance TV’s online arm has added five new short films to its Rectify Film Festival online.
Awards shows are highly social beasts, allowing for live tweeting and "real time marketing" from brands, but the Teen Choice Awards got their social buzz on early by allowing fans to vote by simply using hashtags for each category. While Britney Spears and One Direction cleaned up Sunday night at the actual awards, StatSocial found that the top brands for Teen Choice social media users are MTV, Sony, Starbucks, E!, and Vine.
Naspers Ltd. is in talks with wireless carrier Vodacom Group Ltd. about delivering video content to mobile devices across Africa. The media company aims to compete with Netflix Inc. across the continent. A deal could allow Naspers additional distribution for Showmax, its video-on-demand service that is set to debut this week.

Viewability emerged as the leading factor in boosting brand effectiveness, and time spent with an ad a critical component in driving brand associations. The study found that outstream formats created a +10% lift in awareness of the ad versus instream and +25% lift compared to the control group. Outstream video formats, which place compelling advertising content outside of the traditional video stream, such as within a text article, newsfeed, or slideshow, were also shown to be in the visible area of the screen for 25% longer than instream.
Data-measurement firm Rentrak and cable TV advertising outsource company Viamedia have announced “dramatically increasing sales and new clients through the use of Rental’s automotive segmentation, which provides advanced demographic targeting.” In the past year, Viamedia has increased its automotive client base by 20% with a 17% increase in revenue.

U.S. adults are expected to spend an hour and 16 minutes of each day this year watching digital video, according to new data from Tremor Video. The viewing will take place across different devices depending on time of day. Connected-TV viewing is at the top of Tremor’s list during prime-time hours, and desktop viewing is highest (surprise) during afternoon work hours.
