Monday’s Olympic coverage across the NBC family saw the networks notch an average of 25.5 million viewers with a 14.9 household rating in its Total Audience Delivery measurement in primetime. NBC-only coverage averaged 24.3 million viewers with a14.1/24 household rating, according to Nielsen national data to mark the 50th consecutive night that its coverage has topped primetime with the streak dating back to the 2010 Vancouver Games. After 11 days, NBC-only average primetime viewership is averaging 27.5 million viewers with a 15.3 and household score.
Alex Rodriguez proved no match for the Olympics as FOX Sports’ coverage of his final game on Friday drew a 0.7 final rating and a million viewers, according to Sports Media Watch, which noted that the numbers are "almost certainly the lowest rated and least-watched MLB telecast ever on an over-the-air network." Of course, numbers were squeezed by YES Network’s own telecast of the game in the NY area, as well as a Giants preseason matchup.
Just ahead of the new NFL season, ESPN announced that Sarah Barshop, Alden Gonzalez, Tim McManus and Katherine Terrell were joining ESPN as new reporters for NFL Nation. They will cover the league year-round for ESPN on television, radio, ESPN.com and other platforms with Barshop covering the Texans, Gonzalez targeting the Rams, McManus on the Eagles and Terrell assigned to the Bengals.

MLB Network is throwing a roundtable for its coverage of Pirates/Giants Presented by MLB Now today at 3:30p. The telecast will see Brian Kenny host a roundtable game presentation with John Smoltz, CBS Sports columnist Jonah Keri and MLB.com analyst Mike Petriello. The telecast will feature MLB Now’s signature panel discussion format, plus play-by-play, in-game interviews and live information from MLB.com’s Statcast tracking technology.
All-Pro Jets wide receiver Eric Decker signed on to join Alan Hahn and Rick DiPietro on Hahn & Humpty each Tuesday during the 2016 NFL season on ESPN New York 98.7FM. His first appearance will take place on Aug. 30.

ESPN is partnering up with DoSomething.org for a second year to run the nation’s largest youth-led sports equipment drive through a campaign called Game-Winning Drive. “At ESPN, we’re committed to improving access to sports so that every child can get involved and realize the many benefits of sports,” said Kevin Martinez, VP of Corporate Citizenship at ESPN. “We are proud to work with DoSomething.org to ENSPIRE youth to take action and get much-needed equipment to kids who need it most.”
After signing on to help promote the upcoming Olympic Channel, artist Kygo will perform his song “Carry Me” with guest vocalist Julia Michaels at the Closing Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Aug. 21. “As one of the hottest music acts in the world, Kygo’s music speaks to new generations of Olympic fans,” added Mark Parkman, General Manager of the Olympic Channel. “His Closing Ceremony performance is sure to electrify viewers around the world on Sunday night as we prepare to launch the Olympic Channel. Kygo and his music will be an important element of the Olympic Channel where fans will be able to continue their excitement of Rio and the Olympic Games all year long.”
In other music news, PBR announced its musical lineup for PBR Finals Week in Las Vegas from Oct. 29-Nov. 6. The concerts will be held throughout the week with free shows on Toshiba Plaza outside T-Mobile Arena as well as special performances for fans attending the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in the new venue and the PBR BlueDEF Finals earlier in the week at South Point Arena & Equestrian Center. Conference USA will partner with Campus Insiders for the upcoming season to produce and stream live content from the league, including six football games this season. Campus Insiders will also offer a slate of live-stream events from other C-USA sports, numerous interviews, on-demand video content, as well as feature stories and highlight packages throughout the year. First up will be Southern Miss/UTEP on Sept. 24 at 8p.
DraftKings is launching DraftKings Leagues, a new product that allows players to start a league for their friends and create fully-customizable, private contests. The platform allows consumers to select from 10 sports in baseball, basketball, NFL, CFL, hockey, golf, NASCAR, MMA, soccer and eSports. “Fans have been asking for this product for months, and now it’s here in time for NFL season,” said Paul Liberman, COO and Co-Founder at DraftKings. “By giving our players an exclusive experience they can fully customize just for their friends, it’s like we’re giving them their very own personal DraftKings.”
FloSports announced $21.2 million in new funding to push the online sports network’s growth into new sports and expand its existing verticals. DCM Ventures and Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments led the financing, with participation from WWE, Discovery Communications and existing investor Causeway Media Partners. “We want to partner with world-class investors who share our vision to transform sports media,” FloSports cofounder and CEO Martin Floreani said. “It’s exciting that visionaries in the media and OTT space have backed us to achieve this goal. “We are the best direct-to-consumer solution for leagues, governing bodies and independent rights holders to monetize their events. In turn, this allows our company to serve millions of sports fans and supports our mission to grow the sports, the athletes, the events and the fans.”
Ahead of this weekend’s UFC 202: Diaz vs. McGregor 2, UFC and Twitter partnered to launch athlete-specific emoji’s that will allow fight fans the ability to showcase their support for the athletes. Fight fans can use the hashtags #NateDiaz or #ConorMcGregor to unlock the emojis. This marks the first time UFC has served up specific athlete-based emojis.
Minute Media’s sports digital brand 12up reports that the platform now boasts 6 million monthly users since its launch on May 24. According to the company, the platform has generated more than 40 million social engagements during its first 90 days, with a social footprint of over 10 million.
The surge of the Call of Duty World League propelled eSports viewership for the title to pass 1 billion minutes consumed this year. With the rise in numbers, Activision is now projecting The Call of Duty World League Championships at Call of Duty XP (with a $2 million purse) to rank as the most viewed Call of Duty eSports event in history “by a wide margin,” according to the release. Call of Duty World League, Presented by PlayStation 4 partners with Major League Gaming with fans able to watch Black Ops III action on MLG.TV and in-game through Live Event Viewer.
CS:Go Lounge is ending its run as an eSports betting platform, announcing via Facebook that “Today we are announcing that we are closing our virtual items betting functionality with immediate effect. Depositing virtual skins and items in order to place a bet is not possible anymore,” adding that “Lounge will continue as an e-Sports entertainment and information platform with new features to be released very soon.”
The International Gaming Institute is offering a course at UNLV that allows students to explore the eSports industry via presentations and business plans relevant to the casino industry designed to effectively design competitive events and improve eSports experience models. “eSports is the hottest topic in every board room on the Strip, particularly with respect to Millennials,” said Robert Rippee, director of the Hospitality Lab and eSports Lab. “What better place to begin the journey to understand its relevance and application to the casino and hospitality industry than right here at UNLV?”
Time Inc. named Jim Cavan as Editor-in-Chief of FanSided.com. Cavan, formerly Senior Editor of The Cauldron, will oversee editorial operations and direction for the largest destination within the fastest growing digital network in sports.
