CYNOPSIS
08.15.16

Good morning. It’s Monday August 15, 2016, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Today’s Premiere:
VH1: Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood at 8p

Tonight’s Finale:
MTV: Are You the One? at 10p

IN THE NEWS

Actor Thomas Gibson, suspended last week following an alleged on-set altercation two weeks earlier on Criminal Minds, was let go on Friday. “Creative details for how the character’s exit will be addressed in the show will be announced at a later date,” said a statement from ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios. Gibson, who has been with Criminal Minds since its premiere in 2005, said, “I love Criminal Minds and have put my heart and soul into it for the last twelve years. I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew, and, most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have.” Crime drama returns to CBS Wednesday, September 28 at 9p.

Fox News Channel named Fox Television Studios CEO Jack Abernethy and SVP Bill Shine co-presidents of Fox News Channel. They replace Roger Ailes, who left last month, after being accused of sexual harassment. “Jack was integral to the launch and success of Fox News nearly 20 years ago and we’re delighted he’s going to take on this additional role,” said Fox executive chairman Rupert Murdoch. “Bill Shine has developed and produced a signature primetime that has dominated the cable news landscape for 14 of his 20 years with Fox News. His leadership and keen eye for programming has played a fundamental role in the success of both Fox News and Fox Business Network.” Suzanne Scott was named EVP, programming and development.”

The directors/EPs of Making A Murderer responded to the overturned conviction of Brendan Dassey, one of two men convicted in the murder case questioned in the Netflix docu-series. “This recent news shows the criminal justice system at work,” said Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos. “As we have done for the past 10 years, we will continue to document the story as it unfolds, and follow it wherever it may lead.” Dassey’s uncle Steven Avery, serving a life sentence, has appealed his conviction.

Sarah Schneider and Chris Kelly have been promoted to co-head writers for season 42 of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, reports TheWrap. The duo have been responsible for sketches including “Bern Your Enthusiasm,” starring Larry David as Bernie Sanders, and “(Do It On My) Twin Bed.”

Did Unfiltered host Dennis Michael Lynch take his show’s title a little too seriously? The ardent Donald Trump supporter said on-air Wednesday that conservative NewsmaxTV wanted to restrict his Trump views. He was taken off the air and replaced by another host; by Thursday, he wrote on his website, “The program is finished.” Lynch said he plans to start his own network.

Charge! A Texas TV station is producing a lifestyle show set in one of the country’s largest  shopping malls. Houston Life will air weekdays on KRPC, Graham Media’s NBC affiliate in Space City. “Our team is working hard on what promises to be an energetic, fun and informative experience for our viewers,” said KPRC VP and GM Jerry Martin.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Critical Content announced the launch of internal incubator Critical Labs, made up of 10 millennials tasked with developing and producing original IP for traditional media, digital and OTT. SVP Josh Bingham will oversee the operation. “These days you hear a lot of corporate jargonist as throwing around silly catchphrases like ‘millennial-facing,’” said Bingham. “I only sort of know what that means, but every day I’m actually facing a room full of inspired millennials and empowering them to create shows and content that they would want to watch and engage with. Not sure if that makes me Doc Brown or Nikola Tesla, but it feels like we’re on to something.”

CBS grabbed a comedy project from Carter Bays and Craig Thomas (How I Met Your Mother), comedian Chris Distefano and Sony Pictures Television. Inspired by the comedy of Distefano, laughs focus on two 20somethings raising their newborn daughter in raucous Italian and Puerto Rican families.

Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder (Ringer) inked a two-year overall deal with Universal Television that includes serving as exec producers on new midseason NBC drama Midnight, Texas.

Writer-producer Jami O’Brien (Hell on Wheels) signed two-year overall deal with AMC that calls for her to join the writing staff of Fear the Walking Dead, and write and exec produce supernatural horror series NOS4A2.

Broadcast ratings may have dipped this Olympics season, but “This will be our most economically successful Games in history,” said NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus in a conference call. Lazarus revealed that NBC sold $30 million of additional advertising since the Games began, over and above the record-breaking $1.2 billion sold before. With coverage spread across 10 channels and events streamed online, “Overall, our ratings consumption is meeting our expectations, the mix is just a little different,” said Lazarus. “Our advertisers are happy.” To harmonize measurement data, NBCUniversal has created a tool called Total Audience Delivery for the Olympics, showing how many viewers have seen Olympics content across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.
