Jimmy Fallon extended his deal with NBC Entertainment through September 2021. Since Fallon took over as host in February 2014, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has dominated the late-night landscape, averaging 3.8 million total viewers. “Jimmy Fallon is simply the best that there is, the most versatile star of a show anywhere in television in my opinion,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt. “The Tonight Show has always been an institution, but he’s remade it into a destination for the largest audience anywhere in late night.”

IN THE NEWS

Sesame Street is making a big move. Sesame Workshop inked a five-year deal with HBO that gives the pay cabler first-run rights to the kids series, which has been carried by PBS since its premiere in 1969. PBS and member stations get the new eps free of charge after a nine-month window, as well as a new Muppets show and Sesame spin-off in the works for HBO. The network also landed exclusive streaming rights, so Big Bird, Elmo and Cookie Monster will be pulled from Amazon and Netflix when current contracts expire. “Our new partnership with HBO represents a true winning public-private partnership model,” said Jeffrey D. Dunn, Sesame Workshop CEO. “It provides Sesame Workshop with the critical funding it needs to be able to continue production of Sesame Street and … it gives HBO exclusive pay cable and SVOD access to the nation’s most important and historic educational programming.” Not to mention giving parents a new reason to subscribe to HBO.

Jay’s back! First announced in October 2014, Jay Leno’s Garage premieres on CNBC Wednesday, October 7 at 10p. “CNBC continues to invest in original programming as it establishes the network as a primetime entertainment destination – and who better to invest in than the king of late night?” said Jim Ackerman, SVP, Primetime Alternative, CNBC.

Adding to an A-list cast, Oscar winner Common, singer-songwriter-actor Ne-Yo and Elijah Kelley (Hairspray) ease on into NBC’s holiday production of The Wiz Live!. Common will play the Bouncer, gatekeeper at the entrance to Emerald City, Ne-Yo will portray the Tin Man, and Kelly tackles the Scarecrow. Special is set to air Thursday, December 3.

Among the slew of NBC announcements made at TCA on Thursday: Rihanna is joining the Season 9 team of  The Voice, advising all the coaches. This time around the crew includes Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.

Kelly Osbourne will host the 2015 MTV VMA Red Carpet live pre-show, alongside MTV’s Sway and Girl Code Live stars Carly Aquilino, Nessa Diab and Nora "Awkwafina" Lum, on Sunday, August 30 at 8p. The special leads into the VMAs at 9p. Nick Jonas is set to turn up the party with a performance of his new song, Levels, while Walk the Moon kicks off the pre-show with their can’t-miss-it-this-summer hit, Shut Up and Dance.

Celebrity Apprentice is on hiatus, announced NBC President Robert Greenblatt at the TCA summer press tour on Thursday. With host Donald Trump out of commission (have you heard he’s running for President?), the network has decided to let the reality series sit out the coming season. “But it will be back for the 2016-17 season with a new host,” the exec told reporters, warning reporters not to believe everything they hear – some of the new host rumors making the rounds “are simply not true.”

Holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas is coming to NBC. In a three-year licensing deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, the network becomes the broadcast home of the 1966 animated classic for two runs per holiday season, starting this year. Last season, the special aired on ABC.

Copycat theme week: Which oil magnate primetime soap did it better: Dallas (1978-1991) or Dynasty (1981-1989)? Let us know in today’s Cynopsis poll.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Spike has greenlit its first dramatic scripted series in nine years, partnering with Jerry Bruckheimer and Warner Horizon Television. Harvest centers on a dedicated father working two jobs to support his teenage daughter. The 10-episode series goes into production this fall for a 2016 debut.

TLC joined forces with abuse prevention organizations RAINN and Darkness to Light for a new documentary. Breaking the Silence will explore the challenges faced by victims of child sexual abuse. Doc airs commercial-free on Sunday, August 30 at 10p.

Tina Fey and Robert Carlock are returning to NBC with a pilot production order for an untitled comedy written by Tracey Wigfield. The project centers on a mother-daughter relationship that is challenged when an overly involved New Jersey mom gets an internship at her daughter’s workplace, a cable news network. “Tina and Robert are two of the pre-eminent voices in comedy, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that they’re bringing their next project to NBC,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment.

The Jackal Group entered into a first-look agreement with producer Gary Auerbach (Laguna Beach). Auerbach will focus on both scripted and non-scripted television programming. “Gary has consistently produced memorable and influential television series that redefine audience expectations,” said Gail Berman, Chairman and CEO of The Jackal Group.

Another ’90s sitcom could be getting a reboot. TVLine reports multiple sources are saying Will Smith‘s Overbrook Entertainment is in the early stages of developing a present-day version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

NBC Entertainment is partnering with Keshet Studios on a first-look programming deal that includes a co-production pact for scripted fare with NBC’s sibling studio, Universal Television. “Keshet International’s proven track record of producing quality programs across different genres makes them a perfect partner with NBC,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman, NBC Entertainment. “We’re very much looking forward to finding the right projects that bring out the best in both our companies.”

NBC has given a 13-episode series commitment order to an untitled comedy from Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine executive producer Michael Schur. “[Mike] came in recently and pitched the entire first season, and we loved it so much we ordered it to production,” said NBC’s Jennifer Salke. “Mike prefers to keep details under wraps while he meets actors and actresses, but I can tell you that the man who brought Amy Poehler to primetime is bringing us another funny, strong and particularly complicated female character.”

COMING UP

Mexican actor Alfonso Herrera has been tapped to star in FOX drama pilot Urban Cowboy. The project is based on the 1980 John Travolta film.

Chris Bosh landed guest spots on two shows. According to Variety, the NBA star will appear on FOX’s Rosewood and NBC’s Hot and Bothered

ADVERTISING

Only 44% of digital display ads were viewable during 2Q15, down from 49.4% in the year-ago period, according to Integral Ad Science’s latest media quality report. “The industry has been slow to improve viewability rates despite increasing pressure from advertisers,” notes the study. A bright spot: the percentage of fraudulent display ad impressions dipped from 16.5% to 14.1% from 1Q15 to 2Q15. For insights on unseen online ads, register for the August 19 Cynopsis webinar, Viewability Solutions: How to Get Seen and Lift Digital Revenue. Details are here.

It makes its DVD debut on October 13.
