CYNOPSIS
08.11.16 Good morning. It’s Thursday August 11, 2016, and this is your first early morning briefing. Tonight’s Premiere:
AXS TV: AXS TV Concerts Hosted by Mark Cuban at 9p Tonight’s Finale:
Animal Planet: North Woods Law at 9p
CBS renewed Big Brother for seasons 19 and 20, to air in 2017 and 2018. The summer reality show is aging well – summer-to-date, all three weekly broadcasts rank among the top five programs among A18-34 and the top 10 among A18-49 and A25-54, and total streams across digital platforms are up 33 percent versus last year.
Joining Big Brother on CBS next summer will be Zoo. Now in its second season, the drama about animal attacks against humans is the summer’s second most-watched scripted broadcast. The two-hour season finale airs Tuesday, September 6 at 9p on the network, and will be available September 14 on Netflix.
Cable, satellite and telco TV operators lost over 700,000 subscribers in 2Q16, according to MoffettNathanson’s Craig Moffett. Cable accounted for a moderate 242,000 in losses, while the drop for telco operators was 529,000. While attrition was just 1.3 percent in the quarter versus 1.2 in 1Q16, “The gap between cord-cutting, or eliminating one’s pay-TV subscription altogether, and cord-shaving, where skinny bundles replace fat ones, is getting wider,” warned Moffett.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is going live again, following the presidential debates Monday, September 26 and Wednesday, October 19, and after the VP debate Tuesday, October 4. The move is no surprise the CBS late-nighter’s live broadcasts during the Republican and Democratic National conventions earned strong ratings and social buzz.
Speaking of the debates, can we count on the Republican candidate showing up to the party? Donald Trump told Time that while he will “absolutely do three debates,” he will “have to see the conditions.” Among those: “I’ll have to see who the moderators are….certain moderators would be unacceptable.”

The Big Bang Theory is entering its 10th season on CBS, the last in its renewal deal with Warner Bros. Television, but CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller told a TCA audience he’s certain a new deal can be struck. “We are very confident that everyone involved wants more Big Bang beyond year 10,” said the exec.
Geller was asked about adding a reboot of MacGyver to the fall schedule, despite keeping just two cast members from the first pilot and hiring new showrunner Peter Lenkov (Hawaii Five-0) to write a different script. “At the end of the day we had Lucas Till, George Eads, we had an iconic franchise and Peter Lenkov who said I will do this,” said Geller. “We thought we had more than enough.”
Dr. Phil McGraw clarified on a TCA panel that Bull, the upcoming CBS drama based on his years as a head of a trial consulting service, “is not autobiographical, it’s inspired by.” Asked whether he’d ever imagined handsome NCIS vet Michael Weatherly would play him, the bald talk show king joked, “I really did. And there was nobody else who could do it.” Comedy launches Tuesday, September 20 after the season 14 premiere of NCIS.
Upcoming CBS comedy The Great Indoors focuses on a long-time reporter (Joel McHale) forced to take a desk job with a team of millennials. Asked if the show was going to be about a middle-aged white man complaining about what the world has come to, EP Mike Gibbons told journalists, “Our show is going to make America great again…irony comes through in print, right?” Series premieres Thursday, October 27.
Matt LeBlanc, at TCA to talk up his new CBS comedy, Man with a Plan, said he wasn’t sure if he’d be returning for a second season as co-host of BBC car show Top Gear: “I don’t know. I’d like to. Nothing official has happened yet.” LeBlanc was more certain about whether he’ll stay close with former Friends co-star Matthew Perry, now a stage away on CBS’s The Odd Couple. “We have a shorthand,” said LeBlanc. “Ten years in a building with no windows and the door locked, we got to know each other pretty well.” Man with a Plan arrives Monday, October 24.
Lifetime original movie Who Killed JonBenet, an original movie about the 1996 murder of six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, is in production for a fall premiere. Eion Bailey (Band of Brothers), Michel Gill (Mr. Robot) and Julia Campbell (Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion) star.
CBS is revisiting the Ramsey murder, too, in The Case Of: JonBenet Ramsey. Airing Sunday, September 18 at 8:30p, Monday, September 19 at 9p and Sunday, September 25 at 8:30p, the six-hour limited docu-series offers new experts reviewing the unsolved mystery using advanced technology and forensics that lead to new theories. Also in the wings: ID event series JonBenet: An American Murder Mystery (wt), premiering Monday, September 12.
