was the big winner at the TCA Awards on Saturday, taking home the trophy for Program of the Year. “Critics don’t like me,” said the Fox drama’s co-creator Lee Daniels. “They never do…this  means so much to me.” Amy Schumer won for Individual Achievement in Comedy, while Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer nabbed the big comedy program award. (“Amy wanted to be here, but unfortunately she couldn’t,” said Inside writer Christine Nangle, accepting on her behalf. “She’s being treated for overexposure.”) Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, AMC’s Better Call Saul, FX’s The Americans, StarzThe Chair and ABC Family’s The Fosters were also honored. For a complete list of winners, go here.

IN THE NEWS

FX Networks wasn’t short on news at TCA. FX picked up comedy Better Things, starring Pamela Adlon and co-created and produced by Louis C.K.; ordered season three of Guillermo del Toro/Carlton Cuse thriller The Strain, and announced premiere dates for new Kurt Sutter drama The Bastard Executioner (Tuesday, September 15 at 10p), American Horror Story: Hotel (Wednesday, October 7 at 10p) and season two of Fargo (Monday, October 12 at 10p). FXX picked up to series animated comedy Cassius and Clay, and is the new home to Archer, which resided its first six seasons at FX.

Wall Street was skittish about media company stocks last week, amid apprehension about an ecosystem that saw pay-TV operators lose over half a million video subscribers in 2Q15. But in his earnings call Friday, Cablevision Systems CEO Jim Dolan said, “I don’t think the sky is falling quite yet.” Dolan predicted it would take at least five years to lose 10 percent of bundlers, and 10 years for 30 percent to drop off, because consumers are “very, very comfortable with the amount of choice cable offers.”

BTIG’s Richard Greenfield would beg to differ. In a in blog post the same day, the media analyst warned against downplaying the threat posed by cord cutters. “Consumer behavior is shifting rapidly and MVPDs are struggling to reposition their core video business fast enough to meet consumer demand, made that much more difficult by the complexity of their long-term programming agreements and far greater regulatory scrutiny,” said Greenfield. “The consumer must come first, not the business model, or MVPDs and their programming partners will undoubtedly suffer.”

One of the problems with television these days is there’s just too much of it, said John Landgraf at TCA. The FX CEO said he counted 371 original scripted series last year, which makes it hard for viewers to find shows. Calling canceled comedy The Comedians “an outstanding creative achievement,” Landgraf said, “we just couldn’t find substantial audience to sustain it.”

Kurt Sutter knows how to grab attention. “Nothing wrong with colorful brutality,” he joked at TCA. The Sons of Anarchy creator said his new show, The Bastard Executioner, will also contain violence, albeit with ramifications. “It’s a medieval setting, and their laws, in terms of punishment, were brutal and heinous, so that’s a reality of the world.” Executioner launches Tuesday, September 15 on FX.

Stephen Colbert hit the big screen last weekend, in a trailer promoting his September 8 The Late Show debut. Spoiler alert: it’s funny. Colbert also announced, via Twitter, that his first guest will be George Clooney.

Making the rounds of Sunday news shows, Donald Trump addressed the backlash over his post-GOP debate comments about Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly. “I cherish women,” said the candidate on CNN’s State of the Union, adding he did “nothing wrong whatsoever” by telling CNN Tonight’s Don Lemon, “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever,” after Kelly pressed him about past sexist comments he has made. (He meant “nose and/or ears,” claimed Trump.) As for Erick Erickson disinviting him to Saturday’s RedState gathering, Trump said, “This guy’s a loser.”

Trump’s inflammatory comments to the press apparently cost the candidate a top advisor. Veteran political operative Roger Stone shared with the press an email to Trump tendering his resignation due to the distraction of “provocative media fights.” Trump claimed Stone was fired.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

A sudsy drama about a wealthy Mexican conglomerate from Salma Hayek and Michael McDonald (American Crime) has been put in development at ABC. Diego Gutierrez (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) is the writer.

TV Land is developing half-hour comedy The Mighty Camilla, originally at ABC, from writer Allison Kiessling. ABC Signature is producing; Melissa Rosenberg and Kate Schumaecker are exec producers.

Seven years after it closed, Jeff Kwatinetz is relaunching management and production company The Firm. “The industry has consolidated to the point where it’s hard to find a top management company that isn’t a division of a larger entertainment conglomerate,” said Kwatinetz. “This consolidation has created an industry rife with conflicts of interest, where the artist often loses.” Existing TV projects remain under Kwatinetz’s Prospect Park (Royal Pains, Salem, as well as projects in development), which will move to The Firm; future projects will be developed under The Firm name.

DHX Media is teaming with AwesomenessTV on a production and development deal for content to air on Canada’s Family Channel. DHX will also distribute outside the U.S. for original content produced under the agreement. “AwesomenessTV has been firing on all platforms and understands our audience,” said Joe Tedesco, SVP and GM, DHX TV. “Viewers are easily able to connect with the programming through multiple entry points.”

Lifestyle Network, targeting Filipino viewers, green-lit production of two original series. In Spice to Life, now a 30-minute weekly series, chefs show how to make their specialties at home, while the lives of craftsmen are explored in Design+Story.

TLC has started production on a docu-series following the Busby family, a clan that includes the only all-female set of quintuplets born in the U.S. Untitled seven-episode series from The Boardwalk Entertainment Group is slated to premiere in Spring 2016.

RETURNING SHOWS

Louie C.K. will take an extended hiatus from Louie after season five “to focus on other things,” announced FX CEO John Landgraf at TCA. C.K., who has two other series on the way for the network, took a two-year break between seasons 3 and 4. When will he be back this time? “It will be his choice,” said Landgraf.

Bravo’s Ladies of London are back for season two Monday, September 7 at 10p. Docu-series follows socialites making the scene across the pond.

CASTING

Peter Gallagher will recur on season seven of The Good Wife, returning to CBS Sunday, October 4. Gallagher’s keeping busy: the Covert Affairs alum also pops up on HBO’s Togetherness and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU.

Colin Morgan (Humans) and Charlotte Spencer (Glue) lead the cast of BBC America/BBC One drama The Living and the Dead. Six-part series was created by Ashley Pharoah (Life on Mars).

ADVERTISING

National TV ad revenue was down 2.7 percent in 2Q15, reported MoffettNathanson, with the Big Four down an average 2.9 percent and the eight major cable groups dipping 2.6 percent. “The biggest mistake TV networks have made over the past few years is to let digital marketing companies own industry thought leadership when it comes to innovation and ROI in advertising,” Simulmedia CEO Dave Morgan tells Cynopsis. What do they need to do now? “Proactively step up and press the unfair competitive advantages they possess over digital competitors,” says Morgan. “They may be losing some viewership, but they can still outreach digital platforms 10X everyday, and can even outreach digital platforms 2-3X per day in targeting Millenials. Yes – hard to believe, but true. Linear TV reaches many more Millennials every day than digital video does.”

RATINGS

Jon Stewart’s final night as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show on Thursday delivered 3.5 million viewers, the second best ever, with 1.8 million among A18-49. A visit from Presidential candidate Barack Obama drew 3.6 million viewers in 2008.

Fox News Channel’s GOP debate on Thursday was an even bigger draw than expected. The most-watched primary debate and biggest non-sports cable telecast ever delivered 24 million viewers, 7.9 of them A25-54. The final 2012 debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney earned 11.5 million viewers. Next GOP debates are September 17 and October 28 – and we’re betting some bean counters at CNN and CNBC are hoping a certain bombastic billionaire-turned-reality star is still in the race.

Debate day wasn’t all about Donald Trump. The Republican hopefuls who didn’t make the top 10 cut had their own FNC showdown at 5p, and drew a an impressive 6.1 million viewers, 1.2 million A25-54.

The Sunday, August 2 premiere of ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise grew 45 percent in Live+3 among A18-49, to 1.6, and added 1.1 million total viewers over Live+SD to reach 4.7 million.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 4/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS topped 8p with a 1.4/6 average for Big Bang Theory and Mom, followed by 1.0/4 for Univision’s Amores con Trampa. CBS kept the lead at 9p with 2.1/7 for Big Brother, versus 1.2/4 for NBC’s Dateline Mystery. Telemundo and NBC tied for first at 10p with 1.2/4 for Senor de los Cielos and Dateline Mystery.
