The seven-year deal starts in 2018, when the youth-friendly fare is expected to work its magic on cable’s USA and Syfy, as well as theme parks. Existing licensee is Disney.
Domestic diva Martha Stewart and rapper Snoop Dogg are teaming for a reality series greenlit by VH1. Martha & Snoop’s Dinner Party (wt) “will redesign the traditional food competition in a new, different and very funny way,” said Stewart. “My homegirl, Martha and I have a special bond that goes way back,” added Snoop Dogg. “Can’t wait for you to see how we roll together!” Stewart and Snoop Dogg have appeared together on shows including $100,000 Pyramid and Stewart’s talker.

Discovery greenlit a five-part docu-series about U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. Taking Fire (wt), from Raw TV, launches Monday, September 12. “Taking Fireoffers our viewer an experience truly unlike anything they have seen anywhere before,” said net president Rich Ross. “This is a visceral and literal peek behind a curtain that few of us will ever see again.”
ID gave the go-ahead for a sophomore season of I Am Homicide, following an unorthodox former homicide detective. True crime series, produced by Blackfin, returns in 2Q17.
USA ordered a pilot for The Tap, from Rob Reiner and Andrew Lenchewski (Royal Pains). Period drama is set at Yale secret society Skull and Bones.
Fox picked up interactive musical game show Beat Shazam, based on the Shazam app, from Mark Burnett, Jeff Apploff (Don’t Forget the Lyrics) and Shazam Entertainment. Teams attempt to identify songs in the competition series.
OWN gave an eight-episode order to The Book of John (wt) from Leftfield Pictures. The dramedy/docu-series focused on the associate pastor at Joel Osteen’s famous Lakewood Church in Houston will join OWN’s Saturday night lineup in the spring. Renewed for Saturdays is docu-series For Peete’s Sake, and the net picked up 13 additional episodes of hit series Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s.
Fox is all in on more seasons of its The X Files reboot. “We would have liked to do more in the first place, but there were limitations,” said Fox Television Group Chairman Dana Walden at TCA, of the show’s six-episode return. Walden noted challenges in accommodating the schedules of stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny and creator Chris Carter. “Gillian lives in the U.K., David in New York and Los Angeles. The show shoots in Vancouver. So it’s about coordinating a time when they can carve time to be in Vancouver,” said the exec.
Walden also admitted that with all the “fantastic” shows on cable and streaming that wouldn’t have survived on broadcast, “this is a time for rebuilding at Fox and at networks in general.” That includes Hamilton’s Thomas Kail (Grease: Live) creating a production pod house within Twentieth Century Fox Television to develop projects, and Marc Platt (Grease: Live) inking a first-look television deal.
Fox’s upcoming Lethal Weapon reboot isn’t flying quite as high as the movie franchise starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. “In the films, I believe [Gibson’s] character was doing cocaine, which jacked things up a bit,” said Clayne Crawford, taking on the role of Riggs. “This is Fox, it’s family hour, and there’s no cocaine. I was playing more to the sadness, to ground him in an honest place. What Mel Gibson did was so incredible in 1987, but I think that character has to be more grounded today.”
Star turns: Mariah Carey will guest and perform on Fox’s Empire on October 5, as a “mega-superstar” who collaborates with Jamal Lyon on a new song. Season three of the hip hop drama launches Wednesday, September 21 at 9p. On September 25, Amy Schumer will voice characters on every show in Fox’s Sunday animation lineup.
Which Fox stunt is more likely to get you tuning in to Fox this fall: Mariah Carey or Amy Schumer? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.
Fox comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl will have an NYC crossover episode on Tuesday, October 11, beginning with Brooklyn at 8p and continuing with New Girl at 8:30p. “New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s,” said Elizabeth Meriwether, creator and EP of New Girl, pointing to the 1987 ALF/Gilligan’s Island mash-up. “We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone.”
The producers of Amazon legal drama Goliath expressed appreciation for being able to write stories without worrying about weekly viewership or commercial breaks. Asked at TCA if he’d ever go back to producing shows for networks, David E. Kelley (The Practice) laughed, “I don’t think so.”
Amazon Studios chief Roy Price confirmed that Alpha House was canceled, but hedged, “I like to leave my options open.” Season two of the (very funny) John Goodman comedy was released back in 2014. Price also confirmed that drama pilot The Interestings, based on the Meg Wollitzer novel, will not go to series.
A flashback in season three of Amazon’s Transparent will show Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) as a transgender 12-year-old. Tambor, onstage at the show’s panel, said portraying the character has made him a “better person, a better citizen.”
Movies under TCM’s “Summer Under the Stars” banner include some biggies next week. Roddy McDowall kicks things off in 1943 horse classic My Friend Flicka (Monday, August 15 at 8p), and there’s a double dose of Bette Davis with 1950’s All About Eve on Tuesday, August 16 and 1942’s Now, Voyager (Sunday, August 21). Plus Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in 1954 romance Sabrina.

Hulu, co-owned by Walt Disney, 21st Century Fox, Comcast and Time Warner, is eliminating its free, ad-supported tier and moving to a subscription-only model. “For the past couple years, we’ve been focused on building a subscription service that provides the deepest, most personalized content experience possible to our viewers,” said Ben Smith, Hulu’sSVP and head of experience. “The free service became very limited and no longer aligned with the Hulu experience or content strategy.” Free content will be available on ad-supported Yahoo View, a new site tied to Yahoo’s expanded distribution partnership with Hulu that offers the five most recent episodes of shows from ABC, NBC and Fox, among other networks.
NBCUniversal and Snapchat struck a multi-year content and advertising partnership, calling for NBCUni to produce original episodic shows for the disappearing messages app. First up: customized shows based on The Voice and E! News brands. The Voice on Snapchat bows Monday, August 22 as part of a five-episode short-form series, while The Rundown, hosted by E! News’ Erin Lim will offer pop culture perspectives starting Thursday, September 8. “By partnering with Snapchat, we can combine the largest, most creative portfolio in television with a technology platform that’s evolving and complementing how we engage with audiences,” said Linda Yaccarino, chairman, advertising sales and client partnerships, NBCUniversal. “For our advertisers, this means being associated with premium content in a new and compelling format, and creating a connection that lasts long after your snap disappears.”
Justice Network signed distribution agreements with Hearst,Tribune, Media General, Gray and Univision, increasing the net to 66 million homes and 65 affiliates, double its distribution since launch in January 2015 across the TEGNA footprint.
Spanish-language telenovela/drama net Pasiones launched on Cox Communications in a number of major markets, while WAPA America significantly expanded its distribution throughout the national Cox footprint.
