08/08/16: Apple plans to create TV viewership guide for apps; Instagram Stories uses algorithm to sort feed; YouTube Red green lights three new shows


Good morning. It’s Monday August 8, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


Header bidding: Header bidding is a way for publishers to hold direct auctions, bypassing the inefficiencies that keep websites from finding the best prices for their ad inventory. First, a site reaches out to its ad server to get an ad. (Whereas direct-sold ads are usually negotiated by a site’s sales team, and served up first to the available ad space.) Next, the rest of the site’s ad space is made available through an ad server (often that server is Google’s DoubleClick for Publishers) in what’s called a “waterfall” sequence. The phrase waterfall stems from the fact that unsold inventory is offered to the top-ranked ad exchange. If it remains unsold, it then goes to the second-ranked exchanged, and so on.


According to Re/code, Apple is looking into creating a digital guide that would enable users to see what programming is available across the video app ecosystem, without having to open up individual apps. The guide would be available across Apple devices such as iPhones and the Apple TV. Re/code reports that Apple has already begun talking to video companies and TV programmers about launching the app.


Instagram Stories, Instagram’s new Snapchat-like ephemeral photo-and-video product, is using an algorithm to sort out its feed. The algorithm, powered by Facebook data, decides the order of stories appearing at the top of the Instagram Stories main feed. It does so by referencing content that people engage with on Facebook and Instagram (as well as other undisclosed factors), prioritizing Stories from accounts whose content is most likely to be viewed. By comparison,
Snapchat’s Stories feature is presented in simple reverse-chronological order.

Disney Channel launched 12 new short-form movies, debuting under the heading “Free Period.” The movies launched across the Disney Channel’s connected-TV devices and mobile apps, as well as its website. They’ve also begun to debut on the network’s YouTube channel, rolling out between August 5 and August 18. Genres range from comedy to mystery adventure. Some new details about Planet of the Apps, Apple’s first-ever original series. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow, investor and entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, and musician will.i.am have all joined the series as advisers and mentors. Paltrow and will.i.am will also be serving as EPs. An unscripted reality series, Planet of the Apps centers on an app development competition. The show is being developed through Propagate, the production venture of Ben Silverman and Howard Owens. An open casting call is underway until August 26.
YouTube Red has picked up a few new series. The $10-per-month subscription service has greenlit The Thinning, a Legendary Digital Studios-produced thriller starring Disney Channel star Peyton List and digital celeb Logan Paul; it’ll  premiere later this year. Lazer Team 2, a sequel to Rooster Teeth’s sci-fi comedy Lazer Team, is set for a 2017 release. And  Me and My Grandma, a half-hour buddy comedy starring YouTube fashion and beauty star Eva Gutowski, will also premiere in 2017.

The video analytics company Tubular Labs took a look at Olympics-related digital video metrics in the 90 days leading up to August 4. Among their findings: There have been 69 thousand cross-platform uploads of Rio 2016 Olympics videos, generating 1.1 billion views. That includes 558 Million views and 20 thousand uploads on Facebook; 516 million views and 31.2 thousand uploads on YouTube; and 28 million views and 9,562 uploads on Instagram. The top 5 brands generating the most video views were Samsung Mobile (54 million), Visa (44.6 million), Nissan (27.5 million), Gillette (27.4 million), and Katy Perry Vevo (27.1 million).


Netflix India has named a couple of key execs. Gaurav Pradhan, previously the Head of International Product Partnerships at YouTube, will serve as Director of Business Development, Asia, focusing on India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. And Swati Shetty, who most recently served as Founder and Director at Samosa Stories Entertainment, will serve as Netflix India’s Director of Originals and Acquisitions.
