08/06/15: Move over, Periscope: Facebook enters the personal streaming biz; HuffPo CEO to lead Verizon SVOD launch; Crackle’s The Art of More gets debut date

CYNOPSISDIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Thursday August 6, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

The personal streaming world just got a little more crowded: Facebook unveiled “Live,” a feature that allows celebs to broadcast live videos to their fans. FB says verified users including Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Serena Williams, Luke Bryan, Ricardo Kaka, Ashley Tisdale, Lester Holt, Martha Stewart, Michael Buble and WWE’s Paul “Triple H” Levesque plan to live stream on the network’s new platform. “Our goal with Facebook Mentions is to give public figures tools to connect with their fans authentically,” said Vadim Lavrusik, the product’s manager. Unlike Periscope or Meerkat, the videos don’t disappear unless deleted by the broadcaster.

With the VerizonAOL acquisition complete, AOL is doing the executive shuffle, part of a reorg that groups AOL in three businesses. Huffington Post CEO Jimmy Maymann will oversee AOL’s consumer brands and help launch Verizon’s upcoming SVOD service. Bob Lord, President of AOL, will have oversight of business-to-business, and Bill Pence, Chief Technology Officer, will lead cutting edge tech investments in a new arm dubbed Area 51.

In addition to its unlimited time off policy, Netflix is now offering an unlimited maternity and paternity program, allowing parents to take off as much time as they want during the first year after a child’s birth or adoption. With full pay. “Each employee gets to figure out what’s best for them and their family, and then works with their managers for coverage during their absences,” chief talent officer Tawni Cranz wrote on the company’s U.S. & Canada Blog. Karma? The streaming service stock price hit an all-time high of $122.78 earlier in the day, with news of a September 2 launch date for its expansion into Asia.

It’s just a matter of time before HBO Now brings in the green, assured Time Warner execs during the company’s earnings call yesterday. “Our early experience suggests HBO Now will be a highly profitable revenue stream over time,” said CFO Howard Averill. Four months after launch, the streaming service has added to subscriber growth, but the $21 million in additional revenue generated didn’t cover marketing and technology costs. And there was that free 30-day trial. As for fears that HBO Now could take a bite out of cable subs, fewer than one percent of HBO customers have canceled in favor of its streaming cousin, said HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Crackle announced premiere dates for new and returning series. The Art of More, Crackle’s first original drama, starring Dennis Quaid, Christian Cooke, Kate Bosworth and Cary Elwes debuts Nov. 19; animated comedy SuperMansion, executive produced and voiced by Bryan Cranston, will be available Oct. 8; season seven of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee goes live Jan. 6, and a new cycle of Sports Jeopardy! premieres Sept. 23. In addition, Crackle added features to its “Always On” design: As soon as a viewer launches the Crackle app, a scheduled program will immediately begin playing; consumers can browse for something else in the channel guide while continuing to watch.

Evolve Media
’s male lifestyle publisher CraveOnline Media got an image-driven redesign led by recently appointed Executive Editor Andrew Pogany, the former Editor in Chief of Flaunt Magazine. In addition to its music coverage, new content channels for culture, art, design and style will be added to the site focused on the 25-34-year-old male demo.

CONTENT MEDIA

Streaming VR platform Vrideo partnered with Kaleidoscope to launch a virtual reality film festival. Beginning Aug. 22 in Portland, Ore., the travelling VR film festival will visit ten cities across North America and showcase films from Chris Milk and Aaron Bradbury, as well as a screening of the Nepal Quake Project narrated by Susan Sarandon. “After the unprecedented popularity of virtual reality components in this year’s major film festivals – including Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca and Hot Docs – as well major film and television studio’s recent VR initiatives, including Jurassic World, Wild, Interstellar and Game of Thrones, we want the chance to highlight the incredible independent filmmakers who are pioneering this new film language,” said René Pinnell, Co-Founder of Kaleidoscope.

An ABC “Videobiquity” panel on multiplatform viewing shined a light on the extent to which VOD viewing increases audience for the net’s series, showing frequent triple digit boosts from Live+SD numbers. Factoring in multiplatform viewing, Scandal, for example, averaged a 5.7 rating among A18-49 last season, with 1.23 from VOD and online viewing. More takeaways: women watching ABC on VOD and online are younger (43 versus 55) and wealthier (upscale index measure 130 versus 107) than their linear counterparts.
