In a press conference yesterday, Amy Schumer made good on her promise to speak up in support of tighter gun control following the fatal shooting last month of two women at a screening of her film Trainwreck at a Louisiana theater. She joined Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) when he unveiled a plan that would make it harder for violent criminals and the mentally ill to obtain guns. The senator is Amy Schumer’s cousin. “Preventing dangerous people from getting guns is very possible,” the Inside Amy Schumer actress said. “These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence, but I promise they won’t be my last.”

Rock legend Jimi Hendrix takes center stage in the new Showtime doc Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, premiering Friday, September 4, at 9p, across Showtime platforms. The special chronicles Hendrix’s largest U.S. performance at the Atlanta Pop Music Festival in July 1970 with never-before-seen concert footage, plus footage of the festival’s promoter, Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood and other musicians.
Come on, get happy. Tribune Media’s Antenna TV will celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Partridge Family with a 45-episode, 122-hour marathon beginning at 5p on August 15. The Partridge Family regularly airs weekly on the net Saturdays at 5p.
Country crooner Brett Eldredge is the first of seven judges announced for the live broadcast of the 2016 Miss America Competition. Miss America returns to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, September 13, 911p, and will air live on ABC.

HBO comedy Ferrell Takes the Field will get a premiere at a major league ballpark. In a first for the network, the special will debut Saturday, September 5, at Petco Park in San Diego following the baseball game between the SD Padres and the LA Dodgers, and Will Ferrell will be on hand to introduce it. Ferrell Takes the Field follows the comedian’s one-of-a-kind day last March, when he took the field at 10 different positions for 10 different teams. Special debuts Saturday, September 12, at 10p.
IFC is plumping its original comedy lineup with two new fall series. Benders and Gigi Does It are slated to launch Thursday, October 1, at 10p and 10:30p, respectively. Benders, starring Lindsey Broad, Chris Distefano, Mark Gessner, Ruy Iskandar and Andrew Schultz follows a team of friends bonded by their irrational obsession with their men’s ice hockey team; Gigi features actor David Krumholtz transformed into a 76-year-old yenta. Benders is produced by Apostle; Gigi comes from Grandma’s House Entertainment.
ESPN College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will begin its season for the second straight year from Sundance Square in Fort Worth, TX. The weekly show that regularly airs Saturdays 9a-noon will open September 5 in advance of this year’s matchup between Wisconsin and Alabama on Saturday Night Football on ABC. This season, Rece Davis takes over full-time hosting duties from long-time host Chris Fowler when the crew takes to the road-opening weekend.
Carla Gugino will star in the recast Showtime comedy pilot Roadies. The series, from Cameron Crowe and J.J. Abrams, follows a rock tour through the eyes of the show’s road crew. Gugino will play the band’s production manager; in the original pilot that role belonged to Christina Hendricks.
Hallmark Channel will be a central 2015 broadcast partner for the Ford Motor Co.’s long-standing breast cancer awareness program Warriors in Pink. The multi-faceted buy centers around Season 3 of the net’s original scripted series Cedar Cove. The deal includes integration of both the program and Ford vehicles into the series finale premiering Saturday, September 12, a sweepstakes, custom 30-second spots featuring the show’s talent, three branded segments on Hallmark’s Home & Family series, and an extensive social media presence.
Technology has changed consumers’ relationship with brands, according to a new study from cultural insights agency TruthCo., “The New World of Advertising.” And pity the marketer that doesn’t pay heed. “Because of an increased pressure on corporate responsibility and a desire to invest in companies with whom their values align, consumers, and Millennials in particular, hold advertising and brands to a higher standard than ever before,” found the study. “Today, all marketing is content and all content is marketing.” Says TruthCo. CEO Linda Ong, “Right now is the most pivotal time in the medium’s history as viewing habits and cultural changes are driving a massive paradigm shift.”
AT&T wasted little time introducing a new nationwide wireless-TV bundle in the wake of its $49 billion acquisition of DirecTV. The new $200/month plan offers customers new to DirecTV or AT&T’s U-verse video service HD and DVR service for four TV receivers, plus unlimited text and talk for up to four wireless devices. There is, of course, a catch a two-year service agreement.
Channel 5, the U.K. free-to-air TV network Viacom purchased last September, greenlit a British version of Spike series Lip Sync Battle. The show, to be produced by Whizz Kid Entertainment and exec-produced by MTV UK, will air in primetime and is expected to premiere in the UK early next year. Lip Sync Battle is the most-watched original series in Spike’s history, averaging nearly 3 million viewers.
