PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
MTV inked a first-look production and executive producer overall deal with Liza Koshy, best known for her weekly content on YouTube. Under the agreement, Koshy will develop and executive produce original content for MTV, as well as make appearances on the net’s revival of live music show TRL and other MTV programming. TRL is set to premiere on Monday, October 2.
NBC is teaming with Vin Diesel to develop a reboot of its 1984-1990 crime drama, Miami Vice, via Diesel’s first-look deal with Universal Television. Diesel and Shana Waterman (Wayward Pines) will executive produce alongside Chris Morgan (Fast and the Furious) and Ainsley Davies.
The A-Team, anyone? With Miami Vice in the works, what other 1980s crime drama you like to see revived? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopis.com/poll/
Pilot production in LA fell to its lowest level since 2009, according to a study from FilmL.A., down 14%. With the nationwide average also down 14%, and LA retaining total share from 2015-2016, one likely explanation is the growth in straight-to-series orders, which rose by 14%.
Freeform picked up pilot Then & Now from executive producer Aaron Kaplan. Comedy focuses on old college friends who unexpectedly reunite.
NPACT, the trade organization for producers of non-fiction entertainment content, signed an exclusive partnership with stock-footage and creative-asset company Pond5 that offers NPACT members access to video clips from over 25,000 cinematographers.
TALK AT TCA
At the Television Critics Association summer press tour, CW released the dates for the new season’s superhero crossover episodes, two per night: Monday, November 27, features Supergirl followed by Arrow; The Flash mixes it up with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on November 28. Last year’s crossover stunt “was the most successful week in CW history,” said net president Mark Pedowitz.
It appears there’s Hope for The Originals, heading into its last season on CW. Early talks are underway with creator Julie Plec about a possible spinoffs, including one based on the character of Hope. “There have been many discussions,” said Pedowitz. “I’m very interested if [Plec] wants to do it in the Vampire Diaries universe.”
As for Sinclair’s pending acquisition of Tribune Media, CW’s largest station group, Pedowitz was unconcerned. “In the six years I’ve done this job and prior to that, they have been great partners,” he said of Tribune. “Except for some local sports preemptions, they have not preempted us. I expect that to continue.”
Blake Carrington’s young fiancee on CW’s reboot of Dynasty “represents a more current version of what’s happening in America,” said exec producer Josh Schwartz at TCA. The sweet former secretary played by Linda Evans in the original is of Venezuelan heritage (played by Vampire Diaries’ Nathalie Kelley) and a powerful executive. “Part of the fun is taking a character like Krystle and dirtying her up a little bit,” said Schwartz.
With Rebecca having been left at the altar at the end of season two, the theme for season 3 of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is revenge, said series creator and star Rachel Bloom– or, as she put it, “funny Fatal Attraction.” Though co-creator Aline Brosh clarified, “If Rebecca tried to boil a bunny, she would take the bunny and bring it home, and a month later she would have 50 bunnies. She is not very good at being a femme fatale.”
CBS All Access announced 3 new original series: No Activity, its first comedy, from Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Funny or Die; mystery/thriller $1; and drama Strange Angel, based on the true story of the double life of rocket scientist Jack Parsons.
Tell us again why CBS All Access’ highly-anticipated Star Trek: Discovery was postponed from January to September 24? “To justify being on a premium cable service, we knew it had to be huge in emotion and character,” said exec producer Alex Kurtzman. “And to build this world, there was an airdate looming, and we couldn’t compromise the show for the sake of a date.” As for the Klingons, exec producer Aaron Harberts promised that instead of being “the thugs of the universe,” they’d be “sexy and vital and different.”
Audra McDonald will reprise her role as The Good Wife’s Liz Lawrence on CBS All Access’ The Good Fight, and Michael Boatman and Nyambi Nyambi were upped from recurring to series regulars. Season two of the spinoff premieres in early 2018.
CBS programming senior EVP Thom Sherman told a TCA audience Erinn Hayes’ character will be killed off on Kevin Can Wait. “We will be moving forward in time, catching up at a later date,” said Sherman of the storyline. Hayes’ departure was announced in June; Leah Remini, series star Kevin James’ TV wife on King of Queens, is joining the series after a guest spot on the season one finale. “The chemistry between Kevin and Leah was amazing in the stunt episode we did at the end of last season, and we decided we want to continue that,” said Sherman.
CBS’s new SEAL Team won’t be political, said EP Benjamin Cavell at TCA. “They don’t look at the results of elections,” said Cavell of Navy SEALS on-screen and off. “The work they do, it doesn’t matter who is in the White House.” Series premieres Wednesday, September 27 at 9p.
Asked about diversity on CBS and CW, president of CBS Entertainment Kelly Kahl told TV critics, “We are absolutely moving in the right direction.” Thom Sherman said, “We want our slate to be inclusive, we want it to be diverse, and we believe we will get to that,” but noted that while there has been progress in developing new series with diversity in lead characters, “there is not much shelf space to put on new shows.”
Jeremy Piven explained what attracted him to his role as a billionaire tech innovator hunting for his daughter’s killer in CBS’s upcoming Wisdom of the Crowd. “He’s a human being who is emotionally available and will utterly do the wrong thing for the right reasons,” said Piven. “I pretended I was on the fence [about accepting the role], but I was always in.” Wisdom launches Sunday, October 1 at 8:30p.
COMING UP
The Jacksons will receive the Lifetime Achievement in Music Award at the Black Music Awards, taping August 18 and airing on broadcast syndication September 2-30 and on Bounce TV on Tuesday, October 10 at 7p.
AXS TV celebrates 1967’s “Summer of Love” 50 years ago with Saturday rock blocks every weekend this month. Kicking things off is Rock Legends: The Grateful Dead on August 5 at 7p.
E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians 10 Year Anniversary Special airs Sunday, September 24 at 9p, hosted and exec produced by how-can-he-possibly-have-time-on-his-hands Ryan Seacrest. “Fun and flirty” season 14 of the reality show launches the following week.
