The (ahem) drama also delivered one billion estimated impressions for Sharknado Twitter conversations, and held all top 10 trending topics in the U.S. Next airings: Saturday, August 2 at 7p and Sunday, August 3 at 9p.
When Game Show Network execs, in town for NCTC, ran into President Obama at a BBQ restaurant in Kansas City, MO on July 29, the commander-in-chief asked about the net’s new programming. In particular, he expressed interest in American Bible Challenge. GSN EVP, ad sales John Zaccario tells Cynopsis, "We will be following up on our offer to arrange a screening at the White House of GSN’s most-watched program ever."
Showtime is launching three companion webisodes for drama Ray Donovan across all digital platforms. "Behind the Fix" will be available on SHO.com, YouTube, iTunes, SHO Sync, Showtime on Demand and Showtime Anytime immediately after the eps’ first airings on August 3 and 17, and September 14.
Solid overseas business helped push Discovery Communications‘ 2Q14 net income to $379 million, up 26.3 percent versus the quarter last year. Revenues from the U.S. nets fell 2 percent to $777 million, a dip the company attributed to additional revenues for licensing agreements the prior year. "In the long term, getting the value we deserve for the quality audience we provide is how we’ll get meaningful growth," Discovery’s president and CEO David Zaslav told analysts.
Net income for Starz in 2Q14 rose 5 percent to $69 million, while revenue fell 21 percent due to a drop in home video sales. The company reported Starz Network had 22 million subscribers, up from 21.8 million a year ago; Encore dipped from 35.1 million to 33.9 million.
They’re cutting the cord in Europe now, too. A study from UK’s IHS Technology noted "a worrying trend," with European countries suffering pay TV declines in two consecutive quarters that suggest "a sustained softening of pay TV across much of the region."
Chelsea Handler will moderate a "no-holds-barred" panel discussion following the Orange Is the New Black "For Your Consideration Academy Screening Event" on Monday, August 4 at the Directors Guild of America theater in LA. The Netflix series scored 12 Emmy noms.
The 2014 Governors Award will be given posthumously to a pioneer in the casting industry, Marion Doughtery, during the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday, August 16. Ceremony will air on FXM Sunday, August 24 at 8p and 10p. Dougherty, who died in 2011, was the subject of HBO documentary Casting By.
Production begins August 5 in Vancouver for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries‘ The Christmas Shepherd, starring Teri Polo (The Fosters) and Martin Cummins (Dark Angel). Film will have a holiday season premiere, as part of the net’s "Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas" programming.
Discovery‘s "Gears, Fears and Rears" week kicks off Sunday, August 3 with three hours of Naked and Afraid starting at 8p. Monday, August 4 brings the two-hour finale of Street Outlaws at 9p, and Deadliest Catch wraps its tenth season at 9p, as an arctic hurricane batters the fleet.
The World Dog Awards are headed for The CW in January 2015, and the plan is to treat it just like any other awards show, exec producer/Juma Entertainment president Robert Horowitz tells Cynopsis… with some notable exceptions. "From a marquee host to celebrity presenters and musical acts, it will have the feel of a prime awards show," says Horowitz. "However, that’s where the fun begins. Our red carpet will be green. The statues will be edible. Dogs will accompany celebrities when presenting. And, we’re even investigating closed captioning technology for dogs."
In other dog news, Susie’s Hope, the true story of a woman who survives a brutal attack by a pit bull and ends up adopting an abused pit bull puppy, makes its broadcast premiere on UP Sunday, August 3 at 8p.
Fusion explores the trend of micro-housing complexes in documentary Microtopia, airing Sunday, August 3 at 8p, as part of the news and pop culture net’s weekly "Documental" series.
Two one-hour specials on Destination America offer peeks at creepier sides of the country. The Mormon Manson, about a colony tainted by a murderous cult leader, is followed by Mennonite Mob, a glimpse at a secretive syndicate using their pacifist appearance to ship drugs into North America, starting Wednesday, August 13 at 9p.
Peter Capaldi‘s first season as Dr. Who launches on BBC America sandwiched between a live pre-show at 7:30, and After Who Live at 11p on Saturday, August 23. The premiere will also air at midnight at Doctor Who Season Premiere: Deep Breath theatrical screening events in 12 cities across the U.S. that night, spreading to over 550 theaters on August 25. Price of admission gets you 15 minutes of bonus content.
Leading up to the Doctor’s big day, BBC America will premiere a series of specials including Dr. Who: The Ultimate Companion on Saturday, August 16 at 9p, followed by The Real History of Science Fiction: Time at 10p. Doctor Who: The Ultimate Time Lord checks in on Monday, August 18 at 10p, part of a "Doctor Who Takeover Week" marathon that launches at 8a that day. Fans can vote for their favorite episodes, with the top choices in the "Make Your Own Sunday" poll airing in a marathon Sunday, August 24.
New eps of TLC‘s 19 Kids & Counting launch Tuesday, September 2 at 9p. Series picks up with Jill and Derick planning their wedding, set to take place in front of 1000 of their nearest and dearest.
NASCAR’s Danica Patrick introduces two-hour Velocity special The Peak Stock Car Dream Challenge 2, premiering Saturday, August 2 at 9p. Winner of the competition competes in the NASCAR K&N Series race.
E.W. Scripps Co. and Journal Communications agreed to a merger that combines their broadcast operations and spins off their newspapers businesses, creating two companies. "In one motion, we’re creating an industry-leading local television company and a financially flexible newspaper company with the capacity and vision to help lead the evolution of their respective industries," said Rich Boehne, chairman, president and CEO of The E.W. Scripps Company.
Canada’s Shaw Communications is acquiring ViaWest, provider of data center and cloud technology services, for $1.2 billion. The deal provides Shaw with "a growth platform in the attractive data center sector and is another significant step in expanding our technology offerings," said CEO Brad Shaw.
The WWE signed a 10-year TV and digital distribution deal calling for Rogers Communications to launch the WWE Network in Canada, and become the exclusive distributor of WWE programming including PPV events.
Sportsman Channel has increased by fivefold its number of GCI subscribers in outdoors-friendly Alaska as a result of expansion to the Digital Variety package. The net is available to GCI Digital Variety subscribers on Channel 306 (SD).
SNL alum Jenny Slate (Married) guests on the season premiere of Fox‘s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, returning for a sophomore run Sunday, September 28 at 8:30p. Also featured: Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).
Producer/director/writer Spike Jonze (Her) will turn up on season 4 of HBO‘s Girls in a guest role. The dramedy returns in early 2015.

CBS‘s Extant didn’t get a lift from its move from 9p to 10p on Wednesday, but stuck its 1.1 rating among A18-49. Good news about time-shifted viewing: the summer event series’ premiere has seen a 50 percent bump in its demo rating in Live + 7.
Univision stations ranked number one in primetime among A18-49 in LA, New York, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix and Sacramento during the July sweep. Since its July premiere, Mi Corazon Es Tuyo is averaging 3.6 million total viewers 2+, 1.8 million A18-49 and 831,000 A18-34. The net reports it’s also drawing the youngest viewers in network primetime television, with a median age of 39.
Great American Country boasts it delivered the number one ratings growth in prime for ad-supported cable among P25-54 during the month of July, with year-to-year growth of 51 percent in the demo. Leading the way: Flea Market Flip, Junk Gypsies and the premieres of Highway Cowboys and LogHeads.

BBC America promoted Melissa Drucker to Senior Vice President, Television Sales. Drucker, who joined BBC Worldwide North America in 2007, was a founding member of its U.S. integrated TV and digital ad sales team.
CBS Television Studios named Meghan Lyvers Senior Vice President, Drama Development and Brianna Bennett its Vice President, Drama Development. Lyvers was previously with Management 360‘s Television 360 division; Bennett comes from Fox, where she was Director, Drama Development.
VH1 tapped Jennifer McGovern for its Vice President, Development, East Coast post, and Ken Martinez as Vice President, Current Production, East Coast. McGovern had been Director of Development at Oxygen; Martinez hails from Big Fish Entertainment, where he was an exec producer on VH1’s Black Ink Crew.
Emmy-winning producer Robert Halmi Sr. died July 30. He was 90. Halmi produced over 200 movies and mini-series for television, including The Odyssey, Crime & Punishment, Animal Farm and Streets of Laredo, amassing 136 Emmy Awards for his projects.
Oscar-winning makeup artist Richard Emerson "Dick" Smith died July 30. He was 92. In addition to numerous films including Midnight Cowboy, The Deer Hunter and Scanners, "The Godfather of Makeup" worked on Dark Shadows, and won an Emmy for 1967 TV-movie Mark Twain Tonight!.
