After 26 years as President and CEO of AMC Networks, Josh Sapan is transitioning to the role of Executive Vice Chairman. Matthew Blank, former Chairman and CEO of Showtime Networks, will serve as interim CEO while the company conducts a search for Sapan’s replacement. “There has perhaps been no more exciting time for the company than right now,” said Sapan. “I look forward to continuing to work with the outstanding team at AMC Networks, as well as Matt, my great colleague and friend, to focus on how we maximize our unique content to accelerate our streaming goals.”
Rachel Maddow’s new contract with NBCUniversal calls for her to continue to host “The Rachel Maddow Show” weeknights for now, but at some point next year the show will shift to weekly, according to CNN sources. A change would allow Maddow to focus on other projects in the NBCUniverse.

“Debuting movies simultaneously in theaters and in the home is devastating to our collective business,” said Josh Greenstein, President of Sony’s Motion Picture Group, at CinemaCon. Showtime’s season two order for “Your Honor,” starring Bryan Cranston, was one of several announcements made at the TCA Summer Tour. Also picked up for a sophomore season was comedy “Flatbush Misdemeanors,” an adaptation of the digital series, while late night talk show “Desus & Mero” scored a fourth season order. Special “Return of the Taliban: A Vice Special Report” on Friday, September 10 at 8p will be followed by the Showtime Documentary Films premiere of “Detainee 001,” unpacking the mysteries surrounding John Walker Lindh, the young American found on the battlefield in Afghanistan alongside the people who were supposed to be his enemy.
Also in the works at Showtime: A pilot order was issued for “The Wood,” based on the feature film written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa (“The Chi”). Famuyiwa will direct the pilot and executive produce with Justin Hillian (“The Chi”), who will write the script. The project is a production of Paramount Television Studios.
Netflix ordered three new UK unscripted shows, the streamer announced during the Edinburgh TV Festival. Naked’s “Snowflake Mountain” takes “a bunch of clueless kidults” to a survival retreat, where they realize how pampered their lives have been. Dancing competition “Dance Monsters,” from Lime Pictures, uses the power of VFX to energize the action. And in dating series “Dated and Related,” from Great Scott Media and Main Event Media, siblings help each other search for “the one.”
CBS is developing “The Porch,” a comedy starring and exec produced by Jaime Pressly (“Mom”), from Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios. The series centers on a divorced woman who returns to a home she couldn’t wait to leave to bury a mother she couldn’t stand.
Jenny Klein has been bumped up to showrunner of NBC limited series “The Thing About Pam” following the exit of Jessika Borsiczky over creative differences. The true crime story stars Renee Zellweger and Josh Duhamel.
“Noah Beck Tries Things” was renewed for a second season by AwesomenessTV. The docu-series stars TikTok star Beck, who co-developed and executive produces.
NBC has found its Annie. Celina Smith (“Young Dylan”) landed the role of the plucky orphan in “Annie Live!”, airing Thursday, December 2 at 8p. Smith joins Taraji P. Henson as Miss Hannigan, Harry Connick Jr. as Daddy Warbucks, Nicole Scherzinger as Grace and Tituss Burgess as Rooster.
Netflix shared the voice cast for “Maya and the Three,” the story of a rebellious warrior princess. Among the stars onboard the animated series are Zoe Saldaña, Gabriel Iglesias, Allen Maldonado, Gael García Bernal, Alfred Molina, Kate del Castillo, Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Rosie Perez, Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, Gutiérrez, and Rita Moreno….Brandon Routh (“Superman Returns”) has been set as lead in the voice cast of another Netflix animated series, ”Magic: The Gathering.”

Adult Swim coming-of-age comedy “Teenage Euthanasia” launches Sunday, September 19 at midnight. Set in near-future Florida, the series centers around the owners of the Tender Endings funeral home.
Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” following a team of female high school soccer players who get stranded in the wilderness, makes its debut Sunday, November 14 at 10p.

Shudder has acquired the horror films “Slapface” and “The Advent Calendar” ahead of their FrightFest premieres in London later this month. Shudder will release the films exclusively in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
The newest selection for the Paley Center for Media 2021 programs, Paley Front Row presented by Citi: “Never Have I Ever,” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Netflix series. Among those on hand will be creator Mindy Kaling.
The first half of 2021 saw a shift in how people watch video, with the growth of CTV viewership and the launch of new streaming platforms offering more quality programming, according to FreeWheel’s latest Video Marketplace Report. During this period, ad views continued to increase 50% year over year, driven by the increase in streaming. Streaming services accounted for 45% of recorded ad views, greater than TV Everywhere, Set-Top Box Video on Demand and Virtual MVPDs as a distribution platform. Connected TV accounts for 60% of total ad views, with Roku and Fire TV devices continuing to lead with 43% and 26% of CTV views, respectively.
“Outside of traditional linear TV, streaming services have grown exponentially in the 18 months, boosted by the pandemic’s effects of more time spent at home,” James Rothwell, VP of Marketing, Comcast Advertising, tells Cynopsis. “This significant growth is illustrated by both the 50% annual growth we saw in ad views on our platform as well as the fact that streaming services now make up almost half of the impressions we serve on behalf of our programmer and operator clients.”
VIZIO announced it has successfully closed its 2022 upfront negotiations, topping $100 million in brand and agency commitments, a fourfold increase over 2021. “We’ve developed an advertising business model that is unique in the industry,” said Mike O’Donnell, Chief Revenue Officer of VIZIO’s Platform Business. “We’re providing agencies with access to premium CTV inventory, the ability to target and measure with precision and access to insights that can inform their investment strategies for all linear and CTV.” VIZIO noted its upfront success is supplemented by its growing direct advertising business, which in the last year has doubled participating unique brands and tripled average revenue per advertiser.
DirecTV’s offer of a free HBO Max trial has been cut from one year to three months. “Across DirecTV our premium trial periods are now consistent for three months and this move provides a more predictable experience for customers. We will keep assessing and adjusting our offers to give our customers more choice and control over any premium service they wish,” said a DirecTV spokesperson.
Documentary streaming platform Documentary+ is now available on XUMO, marking its entrance into the AVOD space. The new channel features curated content from Documentary+’s collection of nonfiction films and series.
Africanews is the latest addition to Haystack News’ on-demand world news providers, as a result of an expanded content distribution agreement with the Euronews group. “Adding Africanews to our growing content roster reflects Haystack News commitment to seek out valuable new content partnerships to fuel our growth and add value for our viewers,” said Daniel Barreto, Co-Founder and CEO at Haystack TV.

Viamedia’s video platform QTT announced the launch of QTT Marketplace, an open-platform destination for advertisers and agencies accustomed to digital platforms to access directly premium, curated local and national television inventory. “Buyers and sellers can now take advantage of their investments in data-driven audience planning tools by activating at scale through QTT’s seamless translation platform,” said John Piccone, President of QTT. “As a result, we now have an array of partners offering premium television inventory through demand- and sell-side platforms to connect them directly with traditional and new digital advertisers.” Initial television participants include A+ Networks, Fox, Reelz and Magnite.
Shopify and TikTok are partnering to allow consumers to buy products directly in the TikTok app. In a pilot program, Shopify merchants will be able to add a shopping tab to their profiles and link to products within TikTok posts.

Visual and animation studio DNEG announced plans for increasing its Canada-based VFX and animation operations and talent pool. DNEG is planning a new studio in the Greater Toronto Area that will initially employ up to 200, as well as expanding its existing Vancouver and Montreal offices, and adding a new studio for its Feature Animation division in Vancouver.
