IN THE NEWS

Dominion Voting Systems filed defamation lawsuits against Newsmax and One America News Network for spreading election fraud conspiracy theories that involved rigged voting machines. “The defendants in today’s filings recklessly disregarded the truth when they spread lies in November and continue to do so today,” said Dominion CEO John Poulos. “The defendants named show no remorse, nor any sign they intend to stop spreading disinformation. This barrage of lies by the Defendants and others have caused — and continue to cause — severe damage to our company, customers, and employees.” In March, Dominion sued Fox News for $1.6 billion on similar grounds, which FNC is seeking to have dismissed.

Responding to the Dominion filing, Newsmax said in its coverage of the 2020 Presidential elections, “Newsmax simply reported on allegations made by well-known public figures, including the President, his advisors and members of Congress,” and called the lawsuit “a clear attempt to squelch such reporting and undermine a free press.”

While the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics delivered the smallest audience since 1988, with an average 15.5 million viewers for primetime broadcasts, they were still profitable, reported NBCUniversal. Ad sales topped $1.2 billion, and the Games logged 5.5 billion minutes across digital and social platforms. “Despite being thrown a series of curveballs over the last 18 months, the power of the Olympics delivered to audiences across the various platforms of NBCU has proven itself unequaled,” said Pete Bevacqua, Chairman of NBC Sports. “The pandemic fundamentally altered virtually every aspect of these Games, but our team pivoted, and reimagined, in the midst of showcasing history-making performances across 41 sports.”

Former MSNBC anchor Kasie Hunt will host a daily show on CNN+, the streamer slated to launch in 1Q22. Hunt’s beat also includes covering breaking and national news for CNN, a job she starts September 7.

PBS shared major new DEI initiatives during the TCA Summer Press Tour. PBS will require producers to provide their own DEI plan at the proposal stage and for all new agreements, series renewals and direct to PBS programs. PBS Digital Studios announced today that PBS TERRA, its science-themed hub on YouTube, will launch a new slate of STEM content with support from the US National Science Foundation’s Advancing Informal STEM Learning program. The $2.5 million grant will support a PBS initiative to create STEM-related, short-form videos and conduct follow-up research to better understand how and why these videos attract underrepresented groups.

Google is taking action to protect young users. Ad targeting based on the age, gender or interests of people under 18 will be blocked, and Google is turning off its data-tracking “location history” option for users under the age of 18 and adding filters promoting safe searching for all minors. YouTube plans to change the default upload setting to private for 13-to-17-year-olds, making videos viewable only by the user and people they authorize.

Integral Ad Science has acquired Publica, the CTV advertising platform, in a cash and stock transaction valued at $220 million. “CTV viewership and programmatic advertising have skyrocketed, and by acquiring Publica we’re accelerating our growth to offer publishers the tools to capitalize on this opportunity,” said Lisa Utzschneider, CEO, IAS. “Advanced data and technology will fuel the future of addressable CTV advertising.”

A modern omnichannel marketing strategy can set up touch points across TV, radio, web, and out of home, but must start and end with the phone, says Dan Greenberg, Co-Founder and President of Sharethrough. You’ll find Greenberg’s take on who the winners of TV’s next chapter will be, in Cynsiders.
