ViacomCBS reported 2Q21 streaming results that included subscriber and consumption growth across its pay, premium, and free services, and streaming revenue of $983 million. With the launch of Paramount+, as well as momentum in other streaming services, ViacomCBS added 6.5 million global streaming subs, bringing total global streaming subscribers to over 42 million. Pluto TV notched over 52M MAUs.
With Warner Bros. and Disney moving towards day-and-date releases of theatrical films, ViacomCBS Bob Bakish said on an earning call that he believes a 30- to 45-day window is the “sweet spot” for the model. “That is the overall direction we’d like to go over time,” he said. “But we’ve got to look at each title in this pandemic and figure out what is the right strategy.”
NBC is “encouraged” by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s passage of amended bylaws. “This marks a positive step forward and signals the HFPA’s willingness to do the work necessary for meaningful change,” said a spokesperson for the network, which canceled the HPA’s 2022 Golden Globes ceremony because of its lack of diverse membership, and ethics issues. Among the changes: eliminating the Southern California residency requirement; the ability of new members to vote and serve on committees; a grievance procedure to ensure accountability; no more freebies; and measures to ensure diversity.
Apple TV+ coming-of-age drama “Little Voice” has been canceled after one season. The show, produced by Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, is the first original series to be cut by the streamer.

Rob Lowe (“9-1-1: Lone Star”) will star in and executive produce “Dog Gone,” a Netflix film based on the true story of a man and his son searching for their lost dog. Lowe’s first film for the streamer, “Holiday in the Wild,” was one of its most-watched films for the year.
IMDb TV announced the pickup of season one of the scripted drama series “Troppo” from AGC Television. Currently in production on location in Australia, the show stars Thomas Jane (“The Expanse”) as an ex-cop falsely accused of committing a disturbing crime, who has escaped to the tropics of Far North Queensland.
True crime movie “The Good Father: The Martin MacNeill Story” landed an order from Lifetime. AMC Networks’ SundanceTV has commissioned a “True Crime Story” franchise, telling a variety of true crime stories from unique perspectives. Some pandemic viewing behavior appears to be here to stay. In June 2021, two-thirds of pay TV subs said they watched free VOD included with their subscription at least once a week, up from fewer than half in February 2020, according to Hub Entertainment Research report “Predicting the Pandemic.” The number who bought or rented shows or movies at least once a week through their pay TV provider doubled from Feb 2020 to June 2021. And among those with a smart TV, almost 40% said they had bought a smart TV during the pandemic, and half of that 40% said they had bought a smart TV after vaccines became widely available in April 2021.
ViacomCBS Networks International and Comcast Corp.’s Sky announced that Paramount+ will launch on Sky platforms in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 2022 as part of a new multi-year distribution agreement that also includes the extended carriage of ViacomCBS’ portfolio of pay TV channels and the renewal of Sky as an ad sales partner in select markets. “This is another example of how we are innovating for our customers and further aggregating all the best apps and content together in one place on Sky Q…. Paramount+ is an excellent service with a huge range of fantastic films and TV series, and our new, broader agreement with ViacomCBS will benefit both businesses.”
Estrella Media has become the first Spanish-language network to launch on the Amazon News app on Amazon Fire TV devices. “The last 16 months have shown us that live, breaking news is imperative for our Hispanic audiences,” said José Armando Ronstadt, National News Anchor for EstrellaTV’s nightly newscast “Cierre de Edición.” “Our audience watches not only on linear television but streaming on all their devices.”

Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, AT&T, Verizon, Lumen, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and FireEye have agreed to work on an initiative from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency focused on combating ransomware and cyberattacks on cloud-computing providers. “The industry partners that have agreed to work side by side with CISA and our interagency teammates share the same commitment to defending our country’s national critical functions from cyber intrusions, and the imagination to spark new solutions,” said Jen Easterly, director of the agency.
People-based advertising software company Viant Technology announced the successful integration of CatapultX’s On-Stream video monetization and contextual AI platform into the Adelphic advertising software. The integration scales Adelphic’s contextual advertising inventory, offering brands and agencies contextually-relevant advertising opportunities that can be overlaid within a program without disrupting the content. “Viant’s integration with CatapultX represents the next frontier in native video, where contextual relevancy is detected in real-time and integrated seamlessly into the content,” said Jon Schulz, CMO, Viant.
Starting next month, Nielsen plans to place approximately 3,000 new Portable People Meter Wearables in a subset of its nearly 60,000 active PPM panelists. The move is part of Nielsen’s “continued efforts to modernize its panels and improve the panelist experience, drive broader adoption among existing and new panelists and increase engagement among more challenging demographics,” said the company.

Amazon’s return-to-office date has been postponed to January 3, 2022. “As we continue to closely watch conditions related to COVID-19, we are adjusting our guidance for corporate employees in the U.S. and other countries where we had previously anticipated our employees would begin coming in regularly the week of Sept. 7,” said Amazon’s head of HR, Beth Galetti, in an email to staff.
A return to work date of September 7 “no longer feels appropriate,” said Jeff Zucker, chairman of news and sports at WarnerMedia, in a memo to staff. A mid-October date is being eyed, but as new information comes in, “we are constantly evaluating our decisions,” said Zucker, who reiterated the company policy requiring vaccinations for anyone in the office. “We have been made aware of three employees who were coming into the office unvaccinated. All three have been terminated,” he said. “Let me be clear – we have a zero-tolerance policy on this.”

Deon Taylor and Roxanne Avent Taylor announced the expansion of their Hidden Empire Film Group with the launch of Hidden Empire Releasing. The distributor will serve as a home for films that are increasingly being squeezed out of the “Big Studios’” slate line-ups and offer full distribution, managed rights sales, and marketing advisory services for content, including theatrical, streaming, VOD, and Pay TV windows. “Taking a hard look at the new landscape even as it continues to shift, it is clear that content is increasingly becoming thought of and treated as a commodity, and that is not part of our strategy,” said Taylor.
Circle Network is now available to DISH customers. Circle first appeared on DISH and Sling TV in May 2020 with their series “Opry Live,” and is now making all of its original programming available.
