Hello Blackstone: Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine has been sold to a firm backed by private equity behemoth Blackstone Group. Blackstone is assembling a new media venture to be run by former Walt Disney Co. executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, and Hello Sunshine is its first acquisition. Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine CEO Sarah Harden will join the board of the as-yet-unnamed company and will continue to operate Hello Sunshine as part of the deal, for which terms were not disclosed. The Wall Street Journal, which valued the Hello Sunshine deal at $900 million, reported Blackstone is spending more than $500 million in cash to purchase shares from existing Hello Sunshine investors, including AT&T and Emerson Collective.
AT&T completed its spinoff of DirecTV into a new entity that’s partially owned by private equity firm TPG and whose financials will no longer be included on the AT&T balance sheet. AT&T is receiving $7.8 billion in cash in the transaction.
A bipartisan group of 22 members of the House of Representatives sent a letter to Twitter chief Jack Dorsey demanding the social network address the “ongoing problem” of music copyright infringement, and Twitter’s refusal to address the issue. “Creative content drives engagement on Twitter, yet unlike numerous other platforms, Twitter has not acquired licenses necessary to ensure that all creators are properly compensated for use of their works,” the letter reads in part. “Given the pervasiveness of this issue, we would like to have a better understanding of how Twitter intends to effectively address these concerns.” The delegation, led by Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), requests a response by August 27.

Amazon Studios’ “Lord of The Rings” TV series will premiere Friday, September 2, 2022. The studio dropped a first image of the show, new eps of which will debut weekly on Prime Video in more than 240 territories and countries. Developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the series is set thousands of years before the action of “The Lord of the Rings” films, and the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien on which they were based, and brings to the screen for the first time Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth’s history.
Kathy Griffin has been diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery yesterday to have half of her left lung removed. Griffin shared the news prior to her procedure with fans on Twitter, where she also assured: “I’m gonna be just fine.”

California’s Sunset Studios is spreading its wings to the UK’s Hertfordshire region. The sophomore season of HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU” averaged a 0.77 L3 rating among A25-54 and a 0.99 L3 rating among W25-54–an 80 percent and 82 percent, respectively, increase over the prior six weeks. Alvin Ing, the Asian American actor who appeared on Broadway and in multiple TV series, died July 31. He was 89. Born in Honolulu, Ing counted numerous television credits beginning with a 1974-75 recurring stint on daytime drama “The Doctors” and including the 1976 presentation of “Pacific Overtures.” He also appeared on “Fantasy Island,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Benson,” “Dallas,” “Falcon Crest,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the “Hawaii Five-0” reboot.
Voice actress Thea White, who voiced Muriel Bagge on television series “Courage the Cowardly Dog,” died of complications from surgery related to liver cancer last week. She was 81. White studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and the American Theatre Wing; early in her career she served as personal assistant to Marlene Dietrich while Dietrich was touring Australia.
