MORE TALK AT TCA

IFC introduced a 2018 development slate with 11 comedy projects, including script orders for NGO, about the gin-soaked head of a private West African charity whose estranged lawyer son arrives to tell him the party’s over; satire How to Rig an Election, based on the book by a political consultant; and sketch show Sherman’s Showcase, inspired by Soul Train. Also highlighted were 3 Comedy Crib digital series, including Neurotica, about an OCD dominatrix who has to fight to keep her business when a MegaDungeon opens in her town.

“We are privileged once again to be working with a variety of incredible talent on projects with unique comedic points of view, as well as creating more linear content from our digital platform, the Comedy Crib,” said IFC president Jennifer Caserta. “These projects come from gifted creative teams and are great examples of the distinct comedic storytelling that embodies IFC’s trademark ‘slightly off’ sensibility.”

AMC talked up its diverse series projects under consideration. “Our deep pipeline of projects embodies our ‘eclectic by design,’ quality programming approach and our ‘scripts-to-series’ development model that puts the emphasis on the most important part of our strategy – outstanding writing, a commitment to worlds you’ve never seen on TV before, and rich character development,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. Among the projects are an alien drama starring and exec produced by Rainn Wilson (The Office), sci-fi anthology Shock Theatre and nonfiction horror anthology Wicked West.

CBC and SundanceTV greenlit 8-part miniseries Unspeakable, focused on the emergence of HIV and Hepatitis C in Canada in the early 1980s and the tragedy that resulted after thousands of people were infected by tainted blood.

PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger used the TCA tour to warn TV critics that she’s taking the threat to funding for public broadcasting “very seriously,” and to suggest that if politicians talk to their constituents, they’ll find voters of every stripe value public television. But without federal funding, “PBS itself will not go away, but the number of our stations will. If you are a station for whom 30, 40 or 50 percent funding suddenly goes away, there is no way you can make up that money. A big part of the country suddenly will be without public broadcasting.”

PBS also announced 8-part The Great American Read (wt) and a campaign asking readers to choose America’s best-loved book, aimed as sparking conversations about reading. PBS is also teaming with BBC for global art history series Civilizations, slated for spring. And PBS Kids greenlit animated series Luna Around the World, from Joe Murray (Rocko’s Modern Life) and 9 Story Media Group.

Going to the dogs: In addition to the Kitten Bowl, which will return in its fifth season, Hallmark is expanding its relationship with American Humane by working to reunite soldiers with military dogs when they’re both retired, and train shelter dogs to aid veterans suffering from PTSD. The first class of these dogs graduated two weeks ago, said Bill Abbott, adding, “At Crown Media, we’re not just about platforms, we’re about making emotional connections.”

Digital will have a bigger role in the company’s future – Abbott also announced the October 3 launch of streaming service Hallmark Movies Now, which he said will be “completely distinct from our other networks and launch with 1,000 hours of family-friendly content.” The service will launch on iOS, Android, Roku and Amazon Fire, with other platforms to be added. Also to come, Hallmark Publishing, which will turn existing books into movies, and Hallmark movies into novels, “with additional story lines woven in,” Abbott said.

Rob Lowe was on hand for a discussion of A&E’s The Lowe Files, following the Parks and Recreation star and his sons as they travel the country exploring famous mysteries, which he called “Anthony Bourdain in a blender with Scooby Doo. We want to solve it, but if we don’t, the point of it is a father and sons on the road making memories.”

Fifteen years after her abduction, A&E and Lifetime will premiere a cross-network event in which Elizabeth Smart will tell her harrowing story in her own words. A&E’s Biography special Elizabeth Smart: Autobiography premieres in two 90-minute installments on Sunday, November 12 and Monday, November 13 at 9p, while Lifetime’s Original Movie I Am Elizabeth Smart, starring Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale), Deirdre Lovejoy (The Blacklist) and Alana Boden (Ridepremieres Saturday, November 18 at 8p. Smart was onstage at TCA to offer her take on the film. “It was so well done and accurate,” she told reporters. “I’m very proud of it.”

Lifetime also set premiere dates for fall movies The Watcher in the Woods (October 21) starring Anjelica Houston; Flint  (October 28), starring Queen Latifah; and The Lost Wife of Robert Durst (November 4), starring Katherine McPhee.

Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht announced that Starz has picked up supernatural spy thriller The Rook, produced by a partnership between Lionsgate and Liberty Global. Twilight Saga creator Stephenie Meyer is exec producing, with Stephen Garrett serving as showrunning EP. “The Rook is instantly addictive from the very first scene and introduces what we believe will be one of the most fascinating and thrilling female protagonists on television,” said Albrecht.

Starz also set the season 2 debut date for The Girlfriend Experience. The limited series returns Sunday, November 5 at 9p.
