Real-Time Bidding: Real-time bidding, or RTB, refers to the buying and selling of online ad impressions through real-time auctions – in other words, auctions that occur in the time it takes a webpage to load. RTB auctions are generally facilitated by supply-side platforms (SSPs) or ad exchanges. RTB is a type of programmatic advertising, though it’s worth clarifying that not all programmatic advertising uses RTB. Some programmatic platforms let publishers sell inventory ahead of time, for a fixed price. As mentioned in a previous Codebreaker, this is known as “programmatic direct” or “programmatic guaranteed.”

Following a Q1 in which it beat expectations, Amazon has now had another smashing quarter. The e-commerce giant beat analysts’ expectations, recording net sales of $30.4 billion and a net income of $857 million. Wall Street had projected $29.55 billion in revenue.
Google parent Alphabet had a solid Q2. Alphabet took in $21.5 billion in revenue, compared to $17.7 billion in Q2 of 2015. The company’s net income amounts to $4.9 billion, up from $3.9 billion last year. In Q1 of this year, Alphabet significantly underperformed Wall Street’s expectations. Looks like that may have been a blip in the radar.
VideoAmp, a data and software platform for video and TV marketers, announced a partnership with the programmatic advertising company Varick Media Management. Varick will be integrated with VideoAmp’s video demand-side platform (DSP) for cross-screen campaigns. According to the companies, the partnership will enable Varick to plan, buy and optimize cross-screen campaigns through VideoAmp’s Screen Optimization Platform.

Happy birthday from Facebook. The social media giant has begun rolling out a new tool that automatically creates a birthday video consisting of messages from friends and photos. Users will be able to access the video the day after their birthday, when it will sit atop their News Feeds. The feature will be available to users within the next few days.
Comcast may be integrating Netflix into X1 set-top boxes later this year, but that doesn’t mean Netflix will be just like any other network. Comcast now says that Netflix usage on X1 will count against users’ data caps. "All data that flows over the public Internet (which includes Netflix) counts toward a customer’s monthly data usage,” a Comcast rep confirmed to Ars Technica.

Yet another live-streaming pact for Twitter: The company has inked a deal with Eleague, the eSports joint venture formed by WME | IMG and Turner. The ELeague Counter-Strike: Global Offensive semi-finals and championship will be live-streamed on Twitter this weekend. (The semi-finals begin today at 5PM ET, and the finals begin at 4PM ET Saturday.) For Twitter, this is only the latest in a series of recent live-streaming partnerships. The company has inked deals with Bloomberg Media, CBS News, and all four major American sports leagues. This is Twitter’s first live-streaming foray into eSports.
In support of the new original spy thriller series Berlin Station, EPIX has launched a new cross-platform 360-degree interactive video experience. The 360-degree experience launched as part of BerlinStation.com; it can be viewed in any browser, as well as on mobile devices. Berlin Station will premiere on EPIX in October.
According to a new study from the U.K. antipiracy firm MUSO, streaming video sites accounted for 73.7% of visits to film and TV piracy sites in 2015. The study found that torrent sites such as the Pirate Bay represented only 17.2% of such visits. And MUSO found that traffic to torrent sites for TV and movies actually fell by 19% during the final six months of 2015, as compared to the first half of the year. MUSO’s findings would seem to represent an increase in TV and video piracy on streaming sites. According to a 2015 study from Digital Citizens Alliance, video streaming accounted for 21% of all revenue from piracy site operators. In 2014, it was 12%.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
The anime-oriented SVOD service Crunchyroll has made a new hire. Colin Decker will serve as Crunchyroll’s Chief Operation Officer, a newly created position. Among other projects, Decker will work to develop original series, to expand on Crunchyroll’s merchandising efforts, and to launch events and conventions. Decker has previously served as SVP/GM of Discovery Digital Networks; he now serves as an adviser to the video analytics company Tubular Labs, and sits on the board of the Global Online Video Association. Crunchyroll is majority-owned by Otter Media, a joint venture of AT&T and the Chernin Group.

The 10-episode series, created and produced by Mass Appeal in partnership with Okayplayer, will feature stories told by famous actors, musicians, artists, writers, and comedians.
