The Fullscreen streaming service has debuted Watch party, a new co-viewing feature. Watch Party lets users invite other Fullscreen subscribers to watch content in tandem, following along on a different tablet or device. At the same time, viewers are able to chat together in a lower window. This is becoming something of a trend: Vevo unveiled a co-viewing feature in March that, interestingly enough, is also called Watch Party; Tumblr launched the co-viewing app Cabana in April; and Uptime, YouTube’s co-viewing app, exited the beta phase last month.
BBC America has launched a TV everywhere app for Roku players and integrated Roku TVs. The app, which requires users to authenticate with pay-TV credentials, offers access to shows such as Doctor Who, Orphan Black, and Killing Eve. The app’s debut comes just days before the July 30 premiere of Top Gear America; you can rest assured that’s not a coincidence.
RESEARCH
Roku is sitting out in front of other connected TV device-makers, according to a new study from eMarketer. According to the research firm, 38.9 million Americans will use a Roku device at least once in 2017; that’s an estimated 19% increase over last year. Google’s Chromecast, meanwhile, is projected to come in at second this year with 36.9 million users. Amazon’s Fire TV is projected to come in third with 35.8 million. As for Apple TV, eMarketer says the device will place a distant fourth with only 21.3 million users. Put in terms of market share, eMarketer estimates that Roku will capture 23% of U.S. connected TV users this year, followed by Chromecast (22.%), Amazon Fire TV (21.3%), and Apple TV (12.7%).
