07.24.14 Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 24, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN is revving up for its final go-around with NASCAR with coverage of the 17 remaining Sprint Cup races of the 2014 season, beginning with the Brickyard 400 on Sunday. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will serve as the ESPN In-Race Reporter for the Brickyard 400 which will also see ESPN utilize 75 high definition cameras including four new overhead pit cameras along with four Ultra Hi Motion cameras for replays and unique action shots. For the final 10 races that comprise the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, ESPN will again utilize NASCAR NonStop, a split-screen commercial break format that shows the advertisement on the left side of the screen and a continuation of racing action on the right side.
Samsung NBA Summer League 2014 proved to be hit for NBA Digital, which saw its coverage from Las Vegas hit double-digit audience growth across all platforms. NBA TV drew its most-viewed live NBA Summer League coverage ever, averaging 102,000 household impressions and 115,000 total viewers, for markups of 40% and 28% respectively over last year. Throughout Samsung NBA Summer League 2014 from Las Vegas, NBA TV’s primetime viewership also grew 29% over the same period a year ago. On the digital front, NBA Digital generated record visits and video views during Samsung NBA Summer League 2014, with NBA.com and NBA Mobile collectively seeing an 80% increase in visits and more than 70% growth among video views compared with last year.
NBC Sports Group inked a deal with Fathom Events to showcase Barclays Premier League Live starting Saturday, Aug. 16. The deal will allow Americans the chance to see the matches via “state-of-the-art projection and sound” at select venues across the country on Saturdays throughout the Premier League season. Tickets will be available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com with each week’s game announced the Tuesday before.
CBS and NFL Network will launch Thursday Night Football with the primetime special, Under the Lights, on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 10p on CBS and Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 10p on NFL Network. Jim Nantz hosts the special, which will “celebrate some of the greatest and most memorable moments in the history of prime time football and preview the Thursday Night Football schedule.” CBS and NFL Network launch the season debut of Thursday Night Football on Sept. 11 with the Steelers/Ravens.
Speaking of CBS, the network has slated the special The Road to the PGA Championship for Sunday at 2p. The program offers “ a documentary-style look at eight competitors in the 96th PGA Championship, along with PGA teaching professionals who have guided three of the game’s current stars Jason Dufner, Jordan Spieth and J.B. Holmes.” The show will also see three separate rebroadcasts, beginning July 30, on Golf Channel.
MLB Network announced plans for Cooperstown, and will televise the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with six living inductees set to be honored this weekend. Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine, Tony La Russa, Greg Maddux, Frank Thomas and Joe Torre headline the class, which will be inducted on July 27. Greg Amsinger anchors coverage with Peter Gammons, Harold Reynolds and John Smoltz starting with MLB Tonight on Sunday at noon, with the ceremony set for 1:30p.

NBC Sports Group and Universal Sports Network offer 17 hours of coverage of the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball this week from Long Beach. Programming includes three hours of live coverage on NBC, five hours on NBCSN, and nine hours on Universal Sports Network. Additionally, NBC Sports Live Extra will stream all NBC and NBCSN telecasts. Coverage starts Friday at 3p on NBCSN and culminates with the women’s gold medal match at 3:30p on NBC. Chris Marlowe calls the action with Kevin Wong as analyst and Julie Donaldson reporting from the sideline.
The UFC announced that the rematch between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and top contender Alexander Gustafsson will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sept. 27 for UFC 178. UFC officials also announced a multi-city press tour featuring the two fighters with stops in Stockholm, Sweden, New York City, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Universal Sports Network offers live national television and online coverage of the inaugural La Course by Le Tour de France on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. ET. La Course will feature 100 cyclists racing over 90-kilometers of 13 laps of the Tour de France’s final circuit. Olympian Dotsie Bausch will provide commentary and perspective from the women’s professional cycling community on Universal Sports’ broadcast alongside Craig Hummer and Todd “GoGo” Gogulski.
Mexicanal renewed its original production, “El Rayo Vida de Lucha,” a behind-the-scenes look at the life of “famed Mexican wrestler, promoter and family man,” Juan Padron Luna, aka “Rayo de Plata.” The Season One finale will run on July 27, after delivering solid ratings for the network.

The Pac-12 Conference announced a three-year partnership with Chevron designed to spotlight the value of education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. As part of the agreement, the Pac-12 Network will create a collection of video vignettes, which will run on the conference multimedia channels, highlighting current student-athletes from each campus who major in STEM, including alumni who now work for Chevron. The company also becomes a sponsor of the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament and the official Fuel and Integrated Energy sponsor of the Conference.
Former NBA marketing exec Jamie Gallo has joined Wunderman as president of the New York office. There, he will be charged with delivering “the full spectrum of Wunderman’s brand experience, customer engagement, data and analytics, and World Health offerings to clients and prospects.” He previously served as Executive VP of marketing for the NBA.
Bleacher Report announced the hiring of NFL reporter Jason Cole, who joins the staff as an NFL Insider. Cole has covered the NFL since 1992, working for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, Miami Herald and Yahoo! Sports.
EverBank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars, is set to unveil $63 million in enhancements to the public on Saturday that will see two enormous video boards, spanning 60 feet high and 362 feet long, making them the largest in the world. To celebrate the unveiling; the Jaguars will host a friendly soccer match between London-based Fulham Football Club and D.C. United of Major League Soccer, followed by a concert by country music superstar Carrie Underwood.
ESPN Audio announced that its month-long 2014 FIFA World Cup coverage averaged 23,503 listeners every quarter hour with the USA vs. Germany game on June 26 setting an ESPN Audio record of 147,880 listeners on average, according to Ando Media.
