NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Netflix kicked off the week of tech company’s earning reports by revealing that the service surpassed 50.02 million subscribers (from 48.35 subs in Q1). The U.S. alone accounted for 36.24 million customers, with international subs topping 12.8 million (an increase of 78 percent from the year prior). As analysts predicted, the company hit $1.34 billion in revenue this quarter. It expects to hit 53.74 subs by the end of the third quarter. In a letter to shareholders, the video streaming company also expressed its determination to keep Internet service providers from “holding our joint customers hostage with poor performance to extract payments from us, other Internet firms, and other Internet transit suppliers.”

Yahoo struck a deal with The Weinstein Company to premiere the new drama One Chance on Yahoo Screen for free a week before the theatrical release. The movie is from The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel, and follows an amateur opera singer rising to fame after being chosen by Simon Cowell for Britain’s Got Talent. Sound familiar?

FXX will soon launch an online destination solely for the cult classic The Simpsons, called Simpson’s World. Starting in October, authenticated viewers will have on-demand access to every episode in the series on web and mobile platforms as well as the ability to search quotes, curate playlists and favorite show clips. FXX will also air all 25 seasons in the longest marathon ever (522 episodes!) in chronological order for 24 hours a day for 12 days starting Aug 21 in addition to The Simpsons Movie. “Our goal was to create the deepest digital archive of any show ever,” said FX president of marketing and on-air promotions Stephanie Gibbons.

PBS Digital Studios released the first three episodes of new series Intergalactic Nemesis. The show is based on the original “radio-play graphic novel,” and will feature live sound effects and actors from the comic, with new episodes debuting on YouTube every Monday for the next 17 weeks. The comic will also be made available on online graphic novel platform and app comiXology.

CONTENT MEDIA

Yahoo is hosting a live-streamed Tumblr Ask Q&A session with the cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy today at 7p ET. Fans can submit questions by tagging #GOTGask and @yahooentertainment in the caption, and the movie’s stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, director James Gunn and the head of Marvel Kevin Feige may answer. The live stream will be available on Yahoo Screen platforms.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Yahoo is expected to purchase mobile and analytic company Flurry, according to Recode. Flurry is known to track app usage on more than a billion devices. Yahoo has been ramping up its mobile efforts in light of its declining display advertising revenues.

AD PLATFORMS

Tremor Video and Making Measurement Make Sense (3MS) teamed up to create a campaign on viewability and assist in the 3MS Creative Contest. “We’re pleased Tremor Video is participating the PSA Contest as a judge and helping to build awareness for the viewability impression standards that will help to create much-needed clarity and measurement uniformity for both advertisers and publishers,” 3MS representative and EVP & CMO of the Association of National Advertisers Duke Fanelli said.
