07.15.14 Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 15, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The Germany/Argentina World Cup Final delivered big ratings to broadcasters as both ABC and Univision generated the most-watched World Cup Championship in television history in their categories. On ABC, the contest averaged 17,324,000 viewers and 9.1 rating, according to Nielsen fast nationals. It also ranks as the third most-viewed World Cup game men’s or women’s in the US. In addition to ABC’s telecast, the final match on WatchESPN generated 1,800,000 live unique viewers, 112,100,000 live minutes viewed and the highest time spent per viewer (63 minutes) of any match of the 2014 World Cup. Overall, the 2014 FIFA World Cup ranks as the most-viewed World Cup ever on English-language TV in the United States. ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC combined to average 4,557,000 viewers and a 2.8 US household rating for the 64 matches, marking increases of 39% and 33% over 2010.
On Univision, the match ranks as the most-viewed World Cup final in U.S. Spanish-language TV history, averaging 9.2 million total viewers, besting the 2010 score by 4%. Overall, Univision’s Deportes’ 2014 World Cup reached nearly 81 million Total Viewers for a 34% rise over the 2010 tournament.
Canada also reports record numbers for the World Cup, with nearly 89% of the population (30.7 million Canadians) tuning in to at least some coverage of the tournament on CBC/Radio-Canada or its broadcast partners across all platforms. The Final match ranked as the most-watched match of the tournament with an average audience of more than 4.93 million viewers.
TiVo reports the World Cup’s Top Streamed World Cup Games, based on viewing data collected from an anonymous sample of ~25,000 households.

FOX Sports announced the end of an era, with Pam Oliver shifting to the number two broadcast team for her 20th season with the company, before reportedly exiting the broadcasts. Oliver will join Kevin Burkhardt and analyst John Lynch this season, and will be replaced by Erin Andrews on the primary announce team. Meanwhile, FOX announced that Oliver will now serve as senior correspondent for the company, offering interviews, commentary and essays beyond the NFL for a variety of FOX Sports programs and platforms, including FOX NFL Sunday, FOX Sports Live, America’s Pregame, FOX Sports 1 on 1, college football and basketball and FOXSports.com.
NBCSN is launching NBCSN Sunday Sports Report, a weekly one-hour program spotlighting news and highlights of the sports properties that primarily run on NBC and NBCSN. The one-hour series debuts Aug. 17 at 11:30p. Every Sunday night, the show will examine the likes of the Olympics and Olympic sports, NFL, NASCAR, NHL, Premier League, golf, Triple Crown horse racing, Notre Dame Football, Formula One, IndyCar and more. Liam McHugh will host.
ESPN announced plans to ring in the new college football postseason with the College Football Playoff Selection Show on Dec. 7 at 12:45p. The show will reveal the selections for the two Playoff Semifinals and the other four New Year’s Six bowls (Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl). The program will be hosted by Rece Davis with analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Danny Kanell and David Pollack.

Meanwhile, SEC Network wrapped up its roster of talent for the channel’s launch. ESPN, which operates the upcoming network, announced that Matt Stinchcomb and Andre Ware were joining as analysts while Tony Barnhart, Tom Hart, Kaylee Hartung and Dave Neal have also been added to the roster.
NBC Sports Ventures, Spartan Race and Reebok announced a multi-year strategic alliance that will offer coverage of the Reebok Spartan Race series across NBC Sports Group platforms, with all groups cooperating on joint marketing, promotional and sales efforts. NBC Sports receives exclusive broadcast, cable and digital rights to the Reebok Spartan Race series, with coverage culminating Nov. 16th at 3p on NBC. Leading up to the World Championship, NBCSN will telecast five additional Reebok Spartan Races, beginning Tuesday, July 22nd at 11p.

NBC Sports Group will debut a new cinema spot starring Carrie Underwood performing Waiting All Day for Sunday Night, the opening theme for Sunday Night Football on NBC. The spot will premiere on more than 19,000 movie screens on July 25 and offer a 2½-minute behind-the-scenes look at the making of this year’s SNF show open.
ESPN is also turning to the movies for its promotion, tapping Sean Astin to reprise his famed Rudy speech to promote the inaugural College Football Playoff. The 1993 film is based on the life of Notre Dame’s Rudy Ruettiger but has been reimagined to feature Rudy explaining his that college football would have its very own playoff.
Visa reports that its FIFA World Cup activation marked the largest global activation for Visa with 834 clients in 104 markets utilizing the sponsorship assets. The brand earned 99% of its projected goal of shared impressions by the semifinal matches, and saw nearly 100 million actions taken by fans (in the form of likes, shares, etc.) as well as over 75 million video views.
Twitter reports that there were 672 million Tweets sent related to the World Cup since the games began on June 12, marking the highest number the company has ever announced related to an event. The final game saw 32.1 million Tweets for Germany/Argentina, making it the 2nd most-tweeted-about match of the World Cup behind the #GERvBRA semi-final.
On Facebook, the World Cup Final broke the record for the highest level of Facebook conversation for any single sporting event in history. Sunday’s Germany/Argentina saw 88 million people generate more than 280 million Facebook interactions (posts, comments, and likes) related to the game.
LeBron James nearly broke the Internet over the weekend. Sports Illustrated, which had the exclusive on James’ new home, saw 6.1 million Unique Visitors on July 11, marking an all-time best for the SI Digital portfolio, with over 50% from mobile and 32% from social referrals. It also marked the third time in the last 15 months that SI Digital saw a record-setting day.
Meanwhile, Bleacher Report scored its second-largest traffic day for the company with over 7.7 million uniques on July 11. There were also 13.7 million cross-platform visits across Bleacher Report and Team Stream on that same day, setting a new Bleacher Report record for total daily visits.
The UFC named Nancy Gay as Vice President, Editor-In-Chief of UFC.com where she will develop editorial content for UFC.com and direct the website’s worldwide operation, spanning 16 regions and 9 different languages. Nancy will also oversee web producers and UFC.com writers around the world, working closely with UFC production teams to create exclusive and innovative content for millions of UFC fans. Gay brings more than 20 years of sports journalism to the mix, joining from Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. She has covered combat sports, NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and motorsports for the NBC Sports Group, FOXSports.com, ESPN, and NFL Network.
Eric Hutcherson is joining the NBA as Senior Vice President, Human Resources, effective July 28. He will be charged with leading the league’s global human resources strategy, specifically compensation, employment and relations, learning and development, and recruiting. Hutcherson spent the past three years as Managing Director and Chief HR Officer for the U.S. and Canada Division of Marsh.
Yahoo! Sports Radio added Jeffrey Schwartz to the newly-created position of Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy. Schwartz will oversee business growth and partnerships, in addition to working with management to advance programming strategy, multi-platform marketing and promotional opportunities, and affiliate and talent relations. Also joining the network is Amanda Deutchman in the new position of Director, Marketing and Business Development.
