Comcast will make its entrance into the SVOD market with Stream. The cable company’s Xfinity broadband customers will be able to hop on Stream for an additional $15/month; the service will include about a dozen networks, including the major broadcast networks and HBO, as well as a cloud-based DVR function. Stream launches in beta at the end of the summer, and will be available everywhere Comcast is offered by early 2016.
Kids’ show The Moblees partnered with Smokebomb Entertainment’s app Kidomo to extend the series beyond TV. Through the deal, the Kidomo app will sync with episodes of The Moblees and start a countdown for kids to create their own appisode. The Moblees is distributed by Shaftesbury (parent company of Smokebomb Entertainment) and broadcast on Kids’ CBC.
British TV streaming service Acorn TV will premiere the thriller Chasing Shadows and A Royal Celebration on July 27 as well as Australian series The Slap on July 20. Acorn TV is available online and on multiple devices for $4.99/month.
CONTENT MEDIA
The 67th Annual Emmy Nominations will be live streamed on Yahoo, the digital partner of the Television Academy, this Thursday from 8:30-9:30a PT. Yahoo Global Correspondent, Bianna Golodryga, will host the live stream with commentary by Yahoo TV Editor-in-Chief Kristen Baldwin and Critic-At-Large Ken Tucker. Viewers can tune in to Yahoo TV online as well as through the Yahoo Screen App, and on connected devices including Apple TV, Roku and Xbox.
The final week of the PBS Online Film Festival kicked off yesterday, featuring 25 short-form independent films from partners and member stations. Viewers have until June 17 to vote for their favorite film to win the “People’s Choice” award. As of July 8, the films have been streamed over 200,000 times.
What is influencing ad buys this year? Half of respondents in Cynopsis’ Upfronts Survey suggested integrated programming opportunities are the key driver. Data solutions were next, with 35 percent; only 12 percent said new programming influenced buys. As for the one-on-one meetings that replaced glitzy events at many networks this season, 32 percent of those surveyed labeled them “very effective,” while 65 percent said they were “somewhat effective.” Whether big events are worth the money could be up for debate: 34 percent of our respondents said they influenced ad buys, 40 percent said they were somewhat influenced, and 26 percent said events had no impact.

Video ad tech company Unruly unveiled a new cost-per-completed-view (CPVC) pricing model to allow marketers to pay for a view only when the video has been watched for 30 seconds. “Facebook recently announced it will charge advertisers after 10 seconds, beating the MRC’s 2-second guidelines, but it’s still not enough,” said Unruly CEO Scott Button. “For advertisers that are most focused on audience attention and dwell time, a full 30-second view would be the right option to ensure your desired audience is watching your video in its entirety.”
Interactive music and entertainment network TouchTunes joined the Digital Place Based Advertising Association (DPAA) yesterday. TouchTunes’ ad division Attract Media engages consumers through video and interactive display ads on TV and mobile apps.
Ad tech firm nToggle formed a new advisory board with Mike Baker, President and CEO at DataXu; Kevin Reilly, Senior Vice President of Platform Services at Dstillery, and Chris Scoggins, Vice President and General Manager of Digital Strategy for the Oracle Data Cloud. nToggle raised $5.6 million in a Series A round of funding earlier this year.
Cyber security firm CrowdStrike raised $100 million in a funding round led by Google Capital with Rackspace and existing funders Accel and Warburg Pincus. CrowdStrike plans to expand its cloud-based product Falcon Platform, and grow the team. “$100 million is a lot of coin,” wrote Co-Founder George Kurtz in a blog about the round. CrowdStrike has raised $56 million since its 2011 launch.

Amazon released the first trailer for its upcoming original historical fiction sci-fi cross series, The Man in the High Castle, to Comic-con attendees last week.
