07/09/14: Music Vault brings archive of live concert videos to YouTube, Rightster becomes fourth largest U.S. MCN with new acquisition, The 4th Annual Streamy Awards call for nominations

London-based digital distribution company Rightster acquired European multi-channel network Base79 for $85.6 million yesterday. Rightster helps more than 850 creators and 7,500 publishers license and distribute their work on the internet, and is now the largest MCN outside of North America (and fourth largest within). Base79 has more than 1.1 billion video views per month.

Nominations have officially opened for The 4th Annual Streamy Awards. The ceremony will be held this fall in Los Angeles, with submissions for nominees closing on July 27. “The Streamy Awards are above all about meaningful recognition; that’s why we spent the past year talking with creators, executives, and experts across all video platforms­including YouTube, Vine, and TV­as we put together this year’s awards,” Streamy Awards Executive Producer Drew Baldwin said. “More than ever before, the Streamys now represent programming truly native to the medium, with new categories like Gaming, Beauty, Sports, Pranks, Cover Songs, and Collaboration and more.” Fans will have the chance to nominate their favorite creators or programs in each category at www.streamys.org. Last year’s event reeled in more than seven million live and VOD views, and 2.1 Twitter impressions.

Fandango premiered exclusive footage from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy on Fandango.com and its YouTube channel in anticipation for the film’s Aug. 1 opening. Additionally, the movie-ticketing service is launching a sweepstakes for fans to take home props from Marvel StudiosCaptain America and The Avengers, which can be entered in by purchasing a ticket online, the app or by an email to marketing@fandango.com.


Music Vault made the largest live music video collection of 13,000 vids available to YouTube users yesterday. The concert footage spans from the last fifty years, with performances from The Who, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Fleet Foxes and more. “We believe this content deserves to be seen by the largest audience possible, and our partnership with YouTube allows us to do just that,” MV content editor Bill Antonucci said. “And not only does YT have the numbers, their viewership is diverse and all-encompassing…younger music fans will now be able to experience what it was like to see these classic bands at the peak of their powers while their parents relive the thrill of seeing shows that actually attended.” Additionally, MV will present daily video features, curate weekly playlists and produce original content all available on its YT channel.

Canadian TV network CTV acquired the rights to YouTube’s WIGS series Blue. The show will be available through CTV’s digital arm CTV Extend in addition to its most recent home on Hulu. Blue stars Julia Stiles as a single mother who hides her job as an escort from her son.

Food.com launched a new iPhone free app featuring the site’s 500,000 recipes, shopping tools and location based grocery deals. “Consumers are using their mobile phones more and more throughout the shopping process, from meal planning at home to the point of purchase in the store,” Scripps Networks Interactive (parent company of Food.com) General Manager and Senior Vice President of Digital Food Properties Bob Madden said. “The app provides grocery brands with an in-store shopper marketing program that’s in line with changing consumer behavior.”

is bringing the hit TV movie Sharknado to mobile gamers and bookworms in time for the premiere of Sharknado 2: The Second One on July 30 at 9p ET. Sharknado: The Video Game is designed after the “infinite runner” genre game and is available on the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The book, how to Survive a Sharknado and other Unnatural Disasters is from humor writer Andrew Shafffer, and is on sale now.

Online data marketplace Datonics added GumGum, TwoPointO and Vemba to its data distribution partners to help the companies’ better target ads to their client’s consumers. Datonics has aggregated data from more than 180 million North American consumers, which marketers can use to engage with audiences that will respond more aptly to a campaign.

Zodiak Media named Michael Carrington as the new CEO of production company The Foundation. Carrington was formerly the HIT Entertainment Vice President of Global Content and Executive Producer.
