Guess Rosie O’Donnell likes The View. Outspoken O’Donnell, who had lively clashes during her run as moderator on the daytime talker from 2006-2007, is “extremely close to wrapping up negotiations” to return, reports CBS News. There’s plenty of room at the table: Barbara Walters left the show in May, and Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd are also out, leaving Whoopi Goldberg the last one sitting.
Discovery Fit & Health is getting a makeover. On January 15, the net will debut as Discovery Life Channel, fusing successful programming from DF&H with new content focused on people facing hardships and taking risks. Aiming for a P25-54 audience with an emphasis on women, the channel remains under the purview of Henry Schleiff, group president of ID, Destination America and AHC. The shift “gives us a chance to make bigger, bolder programming choices while always, central to our brand mission, revealing life at its most critical turning points,” said Shleiff.
Nielsen will be launching mobile measurement this fall, reported Nielsen EVP, US Media Cheryl Idell at the Television Critics Association Tuesday. The data won’t be included in the ratings during a September-November “preview period,” but is expected to included by year’s end; mobile views that carry the same ad load as the on-air broadcast will be incorporated in ratings numbers. Idell also wanted to disabuse the audience of the notion that live TV viewing is down, saying it has remained stable for the last three years as time-shifting rose 30 percent.
As if they didn’t have enough to look forward to, Comic-Con attendees will get first crack at the Marge Simpson-inspired makeup collection from cosmetics company MAC, during a one-day sale in San Diego July 26. Everyone else will just have to wait for Marge-ish nail stickers ($16.50), eye shadows ($44) and the like to hit the Web August 28.
ABC‘s telecast of the 49th Annual MDA Telethon will include the top four performances ever featured on the Muscular Dystrophy fundraiser, chosen by the public. Visitors to http://mda.org/showofstrength/vote are invited to watch clips and cast their votes for stars like Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and The Jackson Five. Telethon airs Sunday, August 31 at 9p.
Conan is a hit in China. The TBS late night talker scored over 3 million hits in less than two weeks after premiering on online site Sohu Video. The show appears with Chinese subtitles.
AMC Networks is re-branding Chellomedia, a collection of television networks distributed worldwide that it acquired in February, to AMC Networks International. Also under the umbrella: AMC/Sundance Global. “Re-naming Chellomedia is a natural next step as we continue to integrate this portfolio of channels and transition AMC Networks into a global media company,” said AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll.
Duck Dynasty was the big winner at Licensing Expo 2014 in Vegas, taking home the prize for Overall Best Licensed Program of the Year. Credit a wide fan base that allows for creativity, said Kate Winn, SVP, A+E Networks consumer products, allowing for a licensing program “with something for everyone – men, women, kids, even the family dog!”
