NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Amazon Studios will wrap up the third season of its original pilots program with a show from Oscar winner filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. The new comedy, called Red Oaks, is a half-hour show set in 1985 about a college student who assists a tennis pro at a country club in New Jersey. The cast will include Craig Roberts (Submarine), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Oliver Cooper (Californication) and more. The pilot will premiere on the $99 streaming service in the fall along with The Cosmopolitans, Hand of God, Hysteria and Really.

MTV
announced a new social music video top chart Your MTV Top 20 presenting the week’s most popular global vids from the network’s websites, apps, social media and Spotify’s The Echo Nest. On a weekly basis, MTV will curate a playlist at yourmtvtop20.com or through third-party platform where visitors can like, share, tweet and vote to define the week’s best videos.

Multi-channel network The Orchard partnered with Red Bull to distribute upcoming sports films on global digital and cable platforms. The new titles include: ski film Days of My Youth to debut in fall 2014, motorcycle doc On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter set for fall 2014 and mountain biking adventure Rad Company out this month. The Orchard and Red Bull originally teamed up in 2012 to digitally distribute the movie The Art of Flight.

On-demand Kids network and YouTube channel Kabillion is joining international multi-channel network Base79. The MCN plans to grow Kabillion’s viewership and launch new programs through its network of 1500 channels, 850 content creators and more than 750 millions views per month.

CONTENT MEDIA
 

MTV’s short-form content studio MTV (other) greenlit a second cycle of The Untitled Web Series Morgan Evans Is Doing. The new season will feature eight episodes to debut in early fall on MTV.com, app and YouTube channel. A roster of stars like Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), Neil Casey (Inside Amy Schumer), Melissa Ponzio (Teen Wolf) and more will appear on the vignette style show depicting Evans life and work at MTV.

British TV streaming site Acorn TV added four new programs: miniseries Lipstick on Your Collar, Cold Lazarus and Karaoke as well as the second season of The Field of Blood. Additionally, the service released five documentaries like Martin Clunes’ Wild Life and The Grand. Acorn TV content can be viewed at www.Acorn.TV and on its Roku channel.

Digital Media Rights (DMR) will soon launch its slate of Russian movies and TV shows on Hulu for U.S. consumers. Blockbusters like Metro, Kiss Them All and drama series Junior League and The Day After will live on both the free and subscription Hulu Plus service. Programming can be streamed with English subtitles at Hulu.com/Russian.

…in other Hulu news: Australian drama Neighbours will exclusively stream new episodes on the service starting July 14. Three 22-minute eps will be available in the U.S. on the free service and Hulu Plus after the premiere in Australia, with a new ep available every weekday. The show has been running in the country since 1985.

AD PLATFORMS

Google employed a private ad exchange with ABC that placed ads only in prominent positions to promote the new musical reality series Rising Star, AdWeek reports. The new programmatic strategy puts ads automatically in mastheads across premium publisher’s sites like the Rolling Stone and Us Weekly while using data to better target to consumers. “We were able to run large mastheads in places we were never able to do before and spread out who’s seeing our message,” ABC’s Executive Director of Digital Strategy Ben Blatt told Adweek.
