For some kids, watching TV is punishment, according to a study from Miner & Co. Studio. The majority of children in households with tablets and smartphones prefer watching video content on the devices – and in nearly half of these households, parents report punishing misbehavior by taking away the tablet and making troublemakers watch on the big screen instead. Miner & Co. also said that according to the survey of 800 moms and dads, when given the choice, more kids opt for tablet time than dessert.

IN THE NEWS

Despite short notice, ESPN is moving its July 14 ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic from Trump National Golf Club, in the wake of Donald Trump’s offensive comments about immigrants from Mexico. “This charity outing benefits The V Foundation’s Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, providing resources for important cancer research for minority populations, including Hispanics and African Americans,” said the net. “Our decision reflects our deep feelings for our former colleague and support for inclusion of all sports fans. Diversity and inclusion are core values at ESPN, and our decision also supports that commitment.” On Saturday, Trump admitted to Fox News he hadn’t anticipated the repercussions of his remarks to be “quite this severe.”

Submissions for Screen Actors Guild Award nods are open at http://www.sagawards.org/submissions through Thursday, October 2 at 5p. Nominees will be announced Wednesday, December 9, with trophies handed out on a live simulcast on TNT and TBS Saturday, January 30.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey (Revenge) inked a two-year overall development deal bringing their Temple Hill to 20th Century Fox Television Studios. “Marty and Wyck are incredibly talented producers, with a history of identifying great storytelling and talent,” said Jonnie Davis, 20th Century’s president of creative affairs. “Their laser focus and ability to break through the clutter in such a crowded marketplace makes this a perfect partnership.”

Syfy ordered season three of Bitten. The supernatural thriller from Entertainment One starts production on 10 new eps this summer in Toronto.

Fresh TV has started production on 30-episode scripted series Backstage, a drama shot docu-series style about tweens in arts school. Filming in Toronto has commenced, with the series slated for a spring 2016 debut on DHX Television’s Family.

Prentice Penny (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) joins HBO pilot Insecure as exec producer and showrunner. Comedy starring Issa Rae was written by Rae and Larry Wilmore.

Three episodes in, Lifetime renewed UnREAL for a second season. Averaging 4.8 million views across platforms, the drama from A+E Studios about a dating competition boasts a median age of 43, the net’s youngest ever for a scripted series. Show airs Mondays at 10p.

COMING UP

Telenovela vet Gabriel Soto returns to Univision for Yo No Creo en los Hombres, premiering Monday, July 13 at 10p. Soap centers on a woman out for revenge who falls for an honest lawyer while each are involved with other (lying, cheating) people.

A special one-hour episode of Up’s Bringing Up Bates features a new grandchild and a marriage proposal on Thursday, July 9 at 9p.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy officially launches on Disney XD Saturday, September 26 at 9:30p, but that won’t be the first sighting of the animated superhero series. A sneak peek at the first episode airs Saturday, September 5 a 9p, and ten two-minute videos will run during August focusing on the main characters.

Stand-up special Jay Pharoah: Can I Be Me? Premieres Saturday, August 1 at 10p on Showtime. The SNLer’s first hour-long comedy special features impressions of President Obama, Kanye West and Will Smith, among others.

On the heels of the USA’s FIFA Women’s World Cup win comes Nickelodeon’s Soccer Superstar, a four-night search for the best teen female soccer player. Reality competition kicks off Wednesday, July 8 at 9p during the NickSports block on Nicktoons.

CASTING

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Extant) landed a series regular role on season seven of CBS’s The Good Wife. There’s room for a new face, with the departures of original cast member Archie Panjabi as well as Matthew Goode after one season. “We’ve loved and admired Jeffrey Dean Morgan for years, and we were thrilled to hear that Julianna [Margulies] did too, so it was a no-brainer to ask himto join our troupe,”said The Good Wife creators/executive producers Robert and Michelle King.

Jeremy Sisto (The Returned) won the lead role in ABC’s upcoming Wicked City, reports Deadline. Adam Rothenberg played the role in the pilot.

Emily Kinney (The Walking Dead) joins Masters of Sex in a story arc as a volunteer sex surrogate. Season three launches Sunday, July 12 at 10p.

Cynopsis would like your input for a short (we swear!) readership survey. Link is here – responses are kept strictly confidential and filling it out puts you in the running for a $50 Starbucks gift card.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

The top 200 advertisers accounted for close to two-thirds of TV advertising in 2014, according to Ad Age’s annual Leading National Advertisers report, which also revealed a reduction in measured-media spending of 1.8 percent, with cuts in every medium except broadcast and cable TV nets. The steepest drop: Internet display advertising, down 13.3 percent.

Turner Broadcasting has lined up sponsorship partners for Comic-Con including Lexus, KFC, State Farm, Snickers and AT&T. The telecom company is sponsoring CONAN360 VR, the first time a late-night show has incorporated virtual reality into its broadcast. During the week of shows at the convention, 360-degree cameras will be located at the center of the set, offering viewers the chance to watch the talk show as if seated between host Conan O’Brien and his guests in San Diego.

State Farm is also onboard HGTV’s Beach Flip, featuring outdated beachfront properties transformed into hot properties. Other sponsors include Joss & Main, 3M, Lumber Liquidators and Outback Steakhouse.

HGTV’s Scripps Networks sister net Travel Channel has Hilton presenting “We Are Summer,” with on-air and online promotions including travel guides, custom vignettes and a getaway sweepstakes. Featured campaign sponsors include Snuggle, AARP and U.S. Cellular.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Cable company Liberty Global’s UPC Ireland snatched Ireland’s TV3 in a deal UPC CEO Magnus Ternsjo said “secures the long-term future of TV3.” Offered TV3 CEO David McRedmond, “This deal is a great endorsement of TV3’s strategy and team by a leading global company, and is also an expression of confidence in the continuing turnaround in the Irish economy.”

RATINGS

It wasn’t exactly a nail-biter, but the USA’s big 5-2 win over Japan in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final was the most-watched soccer game ever in the U.S., according to early numbers, with 25.4 million viewers for Fox, versus 18.22 million for the USA/Portugal Men’s World Cup game on ESPN in 2014 and up 89 percent versus the USA/Japan final in 2011. Among A18-49, the game delivered a 7.9 rating.

Good news for Fox was bad (but not surprising) news for ABC and CBS. Opposite the record-breaking World Cup game, ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud drew a 1.5/5 rating among A18-49, down from 1.9 last week, while CBS’s Big Brother tied a series low with 1.6. NBC was stuck with rain-delay coverage, with NASCAR Coke Zero 400 held until 11:15p due to weather.

Telemundo’s Spanish-language broadcast of the Women’s World Cup 2015 delivered a record 1.27 million total viewers, up a whopping 97 percent versus the 2011 U.S. Spanish-language broadcast.

ID had its best second quarter and June ever Prime and Total Day in Live+3 delivery among key demos, including P2+ (870,000), HH (720,000), P25-54 (371,000), W25-54 (254,000), P18-49 (289,000) and W18-49 (200,000) for 2Q15 Prime and P2+ (888,000), HH (753,000), P25-54 (375,000). W25-54 (259,000) and W18-49 (198,000) for the month in Prime.

Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay on Thursday hit a series high rating of .7 A25-54 (660,000 impressions), up 60 percent year over year, and ranked fourth in its 10p timeslot in cable with over 1.2 million viewers.

The second episode of USA’s Mr. Robot delivered 1.41 million viewers among A18-49 in Live+3, up 36 percent from its premiere. Among total viewers, the drama saw a 13 percent boost to 3.2 million viewers. The series, airing Wednesdays at 10p, has already been renewed for a sophomore run.

MTV’s Scream also got a healthy Live+3 lift. The slasher series’ premiere drew over 6.0 million viewers, including 3.1 million in target demo P12-34, up 45 percent. Second episode airs tonight at 10p.
